This presentation begins with an overview of the science-based approaches to the management of ADHD. Much of this information can also be found in Dr. Barkley's recent books, Taking Charge of ADHD (for parents), Taking Charge of Adult ADHD, and 12 Principles for Raising a Child or Teen with ADHD (Guilford Publications). It also discusses those treatments that, while popular, have little evidence for their effectiveness in managing the disorder. Thereafter, the presentation focuses on recent developments in the psychosocial and medical management of ADHD, including parent training in child management, medications, and school-based interventions. It then focuses on counseling parents of teens with ADHD and concludes with a review of management approaches for adult ADHD. The discussion of medication management focuses on issues that should be considered in tailoring the selection of medications for the individual patient. This presentation requires 1.5 hours.

Dr. Barkley, thank you for all of the content you have posted online. Gives some great guidance and a roadmap to getting our son (and mom & dad) some much needed direction in how to work with and treat ADHD and it's comorbidities.

Great video as always! Do you have any knowledge to share about treatment for ultra rapid metabolizers of cyp 2d6? We are struggling to find a medication that works.

Would you consider doing a video on off label meds for treating emotional regulation and also a more detailed video on treating with stimulant and non-stimulant?

Something I haven’t heard you discuss or mention… our job as parents is to raise ADULTS. The non-medication treatments are tool and skill building to set them up for a more independently successful adulthood. Know your resources, use them, help your kids form habits for life.

Is drug holiday recommended like during school holidays when parents are able to supervise the kids
@MaroonIgnorance
@MaroonIgnorance Ай бұрын
No. Research now shows “drug holidays” are more likely to result in harm - medications assist in supplying dopamine and other neurotransmitters to the brain. While neurotypical people receive a routine supply of dopamine, ADHD brains do not due to the disorder. ADHD is a chronic condition. Drug holidays” are essentially robbing the person of the average amount of dopamine the normal people get to experience naturally. This removes all of the benefits of medication that allow people with ADHD to function normally (or as normally as possible), so they will become unmotivated (esp when attempting to complete mundane tasks), unfocused, unregulated, etc. Drug holidays are not beneficial to anyone with ADHD. It’s like going on a drug holiday from blood thinners when you have a pace maker, or a holiday from insulin in someone with diabetes - things are going to go wrong, and fast.
