"Treaty" is a song written by Leonard Cohen.
The song appeared on 'You want it darker'
You Want It Darker is the fourteenth studio album by this Canadian singer-songwriter , released on October 21, 2016, by Columbia Records 17 days before Cohen's death.
The album was created at the end of his life and focuses on death, God, and humor. It was released to critical acclaim. The title track was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance January 2018. It was Cohen's last album released during his lifetime and was followed by the posthumous album "Thanks for the dance "in November 2019.

Thank you for an amazing rendition of one of Leonard Cohen's last and most haunting songs. The lyrics are so paradoxical but so was Cohen. May he rest in peace.

@@MrDarktunesI have struggled with it's meaning for 8 years. It's a song/poem that can mean different things at different times. Is it about God, a lover or his different personas as poet, father, son or lover? All could be true. I have concluded that it is about the peace he sought within himself or for all of humanity to realize that peace is possible when we face conflicts within ourselves or outside because in the end, it is the peace within that matters. We must find a treaty we can commit to ourselves that we can keep to be our best selves and find peace when "it's jubilee" which may be heaven or the afterlife when we come together in joyous celebration of life. The part about the ghost may represent a person in a relationship but Leonard's words were almost always more cryptic. As in his song "Famous Blue Raincoat", he is the adversary and in Treaty, he is the ghost. He sees that there are many layers or roles a person plays in their life. I don't think he liked some of the rules he played to make money in his later life after he left the monastery. It was a necessary evil that he accepted but perhaps the Buddhist monk became a ghost. Even though he saved the monastery where he lived with money he made after he had to leave because of money stolen from him. I hope he realized how much he gave to his fans when he returned and gave us so many gifts that only his unique talent could have given to us. He was so prolific in those 15 years that he toured, wrote poetry and music, recorded for us to have forever. I shared my love of Leonard Cohen with my son who was a musician and admired his music, played it for me and in performances. He was murdered in an alley after a performance 2 years ago. He was 35 years old. They stole his guitar and wallet, beat him with a bat and left him in an alley behind the club to bleed to death alone. Listening to your performance of "Treaty" makes me remember how much he loved that song the most on Cohen's last album. He thought it was the best of Cohen's songs. Thank you for playing it so beautifully for him, for me. I feel him nearby when I listen to you play. He grew up listening to serious pianists (Schubert was his favorite composer when he played viola and piano) but loved his guitar most of all which he would sleep with as if it was his lover.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your son. I have a musician son too and losing a child must be the worst thing to happen in a parents life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts the lyrics of this song. It can't be a coincidence you mention 'famous blue raincoat' one of my favorites too which has a comparable ambiguity in persona. Is Cohen the writer of the letter or the man in the blue raincoat since he once owned a coat like that. I loved to play the song and it's in my gallery. To be honest I'm a late Cohen fan as I am a late pianist/singer ( started playing and singing during the covid pandemic) but with Cohen opened a whole new universe to me.
