Thank you for this video. I'm an English educator who is trying to brush up on some linguistics and I appreciate this kind of content that can help me. I have only one point of contention: Some people work in the office on the second floor. It seems much more logical to me that "on the second floor" is an adjective phrase corresponding to "office" instead of an adverb phrase corresponding to "work." Is there a reason you parsed it as you did?
@TuziTalks5 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Your interpretation is also valid and would work. Typically adjectives are closer to their agent. SInce work was the close agent, I chose to have that PP modify the verb

Hello, I'm not a mother tongue student and i'm struggling to understand some parts: at minute 14:00 you say that "behind the counter" is describing the girl so it does function as an Adjective Phrase, but i can't understand why it is so and it's not an Adverb Phrase stating the place where the girl is. Anyway, thanks for the video, it really helped me understand most of it

Plz differentiate between noun phrase and prepositional phrase bcz in first example "for breakfast" isn't it a noun phrase? And second why can't we make the tree with VP and giving it more branches instead of joining the phrases to main VP part?

In the end, establishing rules for creating tree diagrams depends on the purpose and objectives of the person or organization that wants the diagrams. If you are a student writing tree diagrams for a course, find out from your professor how detailed they should be. If you are a researcher, determine the level of specificity required and follow that protocol.

So how about this sentence "Everybody expected Carl to write a novel" Can u help me to make tree diagram from the sentence above??? Please help me...
@bonbonpony5 жыл бұрын
"Everybody" is the subject, a noun phrase, with consists of just a noun, or rather, an indefinite pronoun. "expected Carl to write a novel" is the predicate, which tells what that "everybody" is doing, and can be subdivided further. "expected" is obviously the verb. Then There's the direct object: "Carl" upon whom the action of expecting is being done. "to write a novel" is an infinitive phrase, because it begins with an infinitive form of a verb, "to write", and its direct object is "a novel", which is another noun phrase (in which "a" is a determiner for the head noun "novel").

Your videos for are good for reviewing tree diagrams for my upcoming finals. Which grammar do you base your analysis on? We have to stick to Quirk at al., A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language, 1985. I think you mixed up form and function in the first example: Elizabeth ordered green eggs and ham for breakfast. You're asking about what role the PP for breakfast plays in the sentence: the role of an adverbial, but that does not make it an Adv.P. in formal analysis.
@TuziTalks6 жыл бұрын
You and I both agree on its form and function. Where we disagree is the nomenclature- semantics. Enjoy the day

The sentence 'Some people work in the office on the second floor'. You mark 'on the second floor' as an AdvP, but doesn't it say more about the office, that it is the office that is on the second floor, not just any office, so shouldn't it be an AdjP instead of an AdvP?

19:30 there is no verb in the phrase "After lunch" so why is it defined as a VP at the top?
@TuziTalks6 жыл бұрын
The adverb phrase, after lunch, describes when the children went and played. Adverb phrases are typically embedded in the verb phrase. This particular adverb phrase was originally in the verb phrase and was moved to the head of a sentence. My examples that I post on KZbin do not typically described the move rules. So to make it easier, I simply add a verb phrase that is in front of the main subject or main noun phrase. An adverb phrase must be part of the verb phrase (predicate). It is not part of the main verb phrase where the sentence verb is usually stored. Does that answer your question?

Rearrange the sentence so you understand its original form As the annual track meet approached, all I could think about was deafeating Anna Banks. All (that) I could think about was (this (defeating Anna Banks)) S NP VP MVP N N ADJC MV Predicate Nominative S N (gerund phrase) NP VP MVP PP All I could think about this was defeating Anna Banks
