This is a university course, not a middle school or highschool class. There was actually no reason for you to learn this in school.
@ciobalina74455 жыл бұрын
phil osophical I doubt this has anything to do with the elites; it’s not like their children learn this in private schools; I did this at university and it’s just something theoretical that has almost no application in real life. Of course, learning grammar is important, but not this kind of course. Not to mention that you already need to know basic grammar to understand this. If you want to be part of the elites, you should focus on money making and money management. Librarities are almost free.
@ciobalina74453 жыл бұрын
@Marian Aabwi I am not sure what country you are in, but you learn morphology (nouns, verbs etc.), you do not learn Generative Grammar/syntax in the form of “phrases” (A phrase on GG is a construction where you have a head and complements, such as “eat apples”, which is a VP). You do not learn this in high school neither in a native English speaking country, nor for ESL for sure as this is college level material. What he did in the first part was a revision of middle school and high school level material which is usually not done in college anymore and because of this students have a hard time understanding the material. So yes, you do the first part, but the actual syntax part you don’t. You probably didn’t even understand what he was explaining very well as he didn’t provide an explanation. This is an extremely short/easy introduction to Generative Transformational Theory and X-bar theory. In the following videos he will start doing the actual material, which is tree diagrams. This was just a revision of school knowledge.

6:05 can the ones in parentheses be shuffled on the same side of Noun/Verb? I mean can occur like (adj)(Det)N(PP) or V(PP)(NP)(adv)?
@evanashworth4902 жыл бұрын
This is a good question, but it's really only the adverb that can move around relatively freely. For example, one could say "Yesterday, I went to school" or "I went to school yesterday" or "I yesterday went to school, etc., with little to no change in meaning. However, for all the other elements in parentheses, they must appear in the order in which they are presented, so, in English, the determiner must always precede the adjective, which must always precede the noun ("the red truck" is acceptable but "red the truck" or "truck red the" is not), so those parenthetical items are optional but must appear in that order (except for the adverb, which can move around relatively freely). I hope that helps!
