In Russia we have same problem,. The bug (Ips typographus) cames every 150 years, kills almost all pines and fir trees. But it good for forests because it hepls to renew forests and after 20-30 years pines and firs are ok and forests full of them.

We have the pine bark beetle here in Western Montana for years now and it affects both the ponderosa and lodgepole pine, then will move to the firs. Some forests are decimated.

Why does drought make a plague of these beetles? Because drought kills off their predators?
@Aydinl18 жыл бұрын
So why don't we have a Great Depression-style Works Projects effort to get these trees cut down?

because people are afraid of "socialist" projects that benefit the welfare of the people

Look up SPLAT VERB. It's a pheromone product that seems to be effective according to the studies against Western pine beetle. It is not cheap but it seems like funding should be going to subsidizing its use. I'm about to look on KZbin to see what they say there but I did apply some in my property recently as I have lost a couple of dozen trees already. I did it very late in the season so I don't know if I just wasted 200$ but by next year I hope that there is a program subsidizing this product if it is proven effective.

29 million dead trees in 2016 is 100 million in 2018. Yep. Confirmed.

Recent rains are good for whatever predators need to get back to work killing these beetles. I don't know if it's woodpeckers, spiders, or what, but 2017 is rainy.
