A couple of seasons to bloom my eye. I bought three from the nursery with blooms 4 years ago. No blooms since then until this year. They come up fine every year but no blooms til this spring. I'm glad I didn't give up on them. Just know a few years may turn into 4 to 5 but once they bloom it's so worth it.

I would love to have this in my garden, but I don't think they are sold here in New Zealand .... I will have to check that out on the internet. We do have the normal peonies, & I planted one in 2011, & was so happy to see that it had its very first bud, & telling myself to be careful as I weeded around it. Well, we have a persistent weed that has a leaf shape very similar to the peony, & as I was still thinking happy thoughts about my very first peony being in bud, I pulled it out ....... yes, I did!!! And not only did I pull it out, but it snapped off at the base as I did so ...... I actually sat holding it, & crying. Since then, I haven't planted another one, but I think I will do so. You have inspired me ..... & hopefully I won't pull this one out.

This is so great. I would love to see more in depth videos like this on individual plants! For example, coleus! I'm so confused about when and where to "pinch back." There's some videos out there on the subject, but they aren't super clear and I typically can't see what the person is doing with their hands. I've read some articles too, but they don't have detailed pictures.
@Jack-oc2xq7 жыл бұрын
Cute_but_dumb its been a while since you commented this but incase you didnt find out, pinching back is when you cut back a stem of a plant to a leaf node, where the leaf grows out from the stem, the point of this is to make plants busier, because the stem continues to grow from the little bud in between the leaf and the stem

I'm curious about the ants as well. I recently read that if you want to bring the blooms indoors for display you should cut the stems when the buds are beginning to show color and are soft as marshmallows. You can then shake off any ants, place the stems in water and you should have blooms in a day or two. I haven't tried it yet and would appreciate your opinion.
@allenlebo3 жыл бұрын
Tree peonies don’t have ants. Regular peonies are easy to clean of ants. Dip each one, flower head down, in a pail of slightly soapy water and shake of water. Check under the leaves at the base of the flower in case any ants are hiding there.

Just one piece of advice, at about 4:15 in you talk about shoots coming from the ground and to remove them. Tree peonies are not truly trees, they’re a perennial shrub, and can have tree peony shoots come from the ground as well. Especially in colder zones the main stem can die back completely and they’ll need to rely on new growth from the ground....suggest that anyone with a tree peony allow those ground shoots to open enough to tell if the foliage is from the tree Peony or the herbaceous nurse root before removing anything.
@willaerley71403 жыл бұрын
Are tree peonies less likely to flop compared to the shrub versions?
@lizbest863 жыл бұрын
@@willaerley7140 tree peonies aren’t truly trees, they’re woody shrubs. The stems are woody and stiff so they don’t flop to the ground at all. Some types of tree peonies have flowers that droop down on those stiff stems, though-they are really heavy. The worst are Chinese Suffruticosas, Japanese droop less. Rockii are gorgeous, blooms typically have a darker “throat” and they don’t droop at all. Lutes hybrids are pretty and colorful and have been known to have a small flush of flowers in the fall under some circumstances-definitely not regularly, unfortunately. Newer hybridizers try to avoid droopy flowers with the newer varieties. Good places to look if you’re interested is Adelman’s Peony Paradise there in Oregon, think outside Salem...website is www.peonyparadise.com. Another wonderful grower/hybridizer is Nate Bremer of Solaris Farms, website is www.solarisfarms.com.

Anyways we are down to 3 nurseries which is a huge bumer😢 1 is a small very small nursery the other focuses on succulents which i like also and the last one is more into saleing trees, shrubs, bougainvillea, and roses, they do have 2 tables of the 4in pots of annuals which is petunia, gazanias, and foxtail ferns but none of them carry peony. The first second I saw this one I said I will have one they are beautiful and peony are my favorite shrub plant aaaaand tree.👍😊🖒
