On this video I show my process for preparing my woodlot for replanting and reforestation. I talk about site prep, thinning, releasing trees to get some light to the forest floor, etc. One of the main issues with this site is the reed canary grass. I found a clever and easy way to prepare the canary grass field for planting.

Right on. I tree planted 8 seasons in my life for a tree planting company in northern Ontario. I planted half a million trees in this area. I get to see them grow.

@@SJForestProducts from what I learned in my time in reforestation is that it all depends on the land. I noticed some of my trees grew huge in one area but not at all in others.

Wow, that grass leaves a thick mat of material. I've had similar issues, but with ferns. Had to resort to chemistry to get them back to being a controllable nuisance. A suggestion for thinning: Maybe get a smaller chainsaw, like an MS171? I used to do all my thinning and felling with a MS261, but after 3-4 hours I felt like, I was dragging my knuckles along the forest floor like a gorilla, because my arms were so heavy and my back knackered. The solution was buying a small saw (MS171). Best money I ever spent. This is now my go to saw for thinning. Just a thought 🙂

How are things going? Things in Ukraine seem to be getting worse, not better. Have you notice lots of refugees?

@@SJForestProducts Well, unfortunately there are more and more. On train stations we have calls in ukrainian, informing incomming people what to do, where to go to register and get help, all public transport is free for them, they get 5000 CZK (250 USD) to be able get basic stuff. 150 thousand registered(!) refugees, only 10 % are men (ill, disabled, elderly), 90 % women and children. Germany the same, Slovakia 200 k, Poland like 1,3 milion, Romania 500 k... Crazy... Our neighbors have Ukrainian family at home, despite they are Russians... School organizes meals for about 300 people in my town. Now are people helping, may be even overhelping, but this is not a sprint, more like marathon, real trouble is ahead, in 3-4 months... Let us hope and pray, this madness ends soon.

Hi Jason, Great video, I am not a pro forester but I would think about having a forestry mulcher come in and grind up everything on the ground and that would add nutrients to the soil and leave a nice clean area to get into and look nicer. Ron

Hi Ron. I absolutely agree! I checked into this option and it was soooo expensive. They wantes $3k per acre to mulch! I also looked at renting a mower and skidsteer. It was $3k per week! I couldnt justify to cost to get ready to plant $600 worth of trees.🤣 maybe I should go into the mulching biz!

Very cool! I'm curious how those branches you wrapped in bags of peat are coming along, and if there is a spot for any of them in one of those Alder stands to test them out.

Hey Jason. To bad there's no value to the Alder. With all the work you've done over the last 8 months - how much of your 50 acres have you cleaned up? Love watching your progress! When does the "S" part of "S&J" come out & cut a tree down?? Take Care. Stay safe. Jim

Haha, the "S" part came out a few times the first month we owned the property and then she retired 🤣 so far I have about 5-6 acres cleaned up and replanted. About 30 cleaned up in various stages.
