Yes it would have been cheaper and easier to just cut the trees down. Sometimes special effort is needed to save something great. To me these two trees are important parts of the ecosystem on my little farm.
In this video I try to give you a step by step approach on how I assembled the hardware to repair these trees. Both trees had the same problem. They were splitting right down the main trunk where to major branches were dividing out.
Keep in mind that I am not a professional arborist. I can't afford the services that they can offer. This solution is the result of some short conversation with an arborist and just my ideas looking at the physics of the tree.

I have a small tree care business in Scotland. Not everything you did was exactly right but I think you did a great job and I admire that you took the time and made the effort to retain your trees! A lot of people are too quick to sentence knackered trees to be felled. Great stuff, thanks for the video!

Today a viewer pointed out a safety issue in my video. I really appreciate viewers who do this. I learn something and I add annotations to help others. However, this viewer chose to tell me using profanity and calling me names. It's really too bad too. His comments were blocked permanently from my channel. I'm always open to learning. Sometimes I don't even know I'm making a mistake because I learned it differently. When I learn the correct way I really do try to incorporate those things into my life and videos. When sharing your knowledge with video creators keep in mind that they are real people on a journey just like everyone else. You do not have to be mean to get your point across. *Thank you Mr. Viewer who educated me today*. I learned something and for that I am grateful. Now, if you send me a private message with an apology for your cross words I will remove you from my blocked user list. Until then... have a great day.

Besides the safety issue you did a good job. I also repaired a tree that have a long branch hanging over my roof and causing damage to shingles.I used a completely different method. I used a lifter winch to pull the branch to where I want first. After get the branch in a desirable location I then attached in place the steel cable to keep the branch in place. I did not used that piece in between. Applying tension with the winch I got the branch much higher than using only that limited threaded that the buckle offers. In my case, using the winch, I lifted the long branch about five feet. There is not in the cables between the two branches of the tree.

Those trees were definitely worth the effort. I have an Armstrong Maple whose trunk just split, and your video has given me an idea of how I can save it. Some of the comments are very helpful, too. Thanks. I've had some training and experience in pruning, so the "hat rack'" next to your left hand at 6:01 caught my attention. For a more natural look I would cut that off. From what I've heard, the tree will heal faster closer to the trunk, even though the initial cut surface is larger.

For what it's worth, mesquites are non-native to Texas (native to Europe) and consume 60 gallons of ground-water/inch of diameter of tree trunk per day and have been known to suck water wells, creeks, and riverbeds dry. I love mesquite (gorgeous tree, gorgeous wood for furniture, great bbq), but think it's good for every farmer to know this tidbit as to know how many, or which, mesquites are worth having around

Very nicely done! Look into terminal fasteners like wirestops or wedgegrips if you want to do the next one with less damage. To install a 3/16" cable you only need a 1/4" hole. Nice work showing straps and comealong--all compliant with ANSI A300 Part 3.

I have a 60 year old cherry tree one major limb crashed to the driveway the weight plus rot. There's about 50 percent rot in the trunk plus large crack going down the trunk. also one third dead branches. The arborist said he could cable the crack and prune all dead branches and I can get 3 more years out of the tree before removal. My neighbor next morning said look at the trunk and there was a perfectly looking face in the trunk of a wise old man. So the tree will be removed just above the face about 4 feet of trunk. I will grow flowers on top of the trunk in thanks for all the years of shade and fruit. I also have made 14 cuttings so hopefully the tree will live on...

Hi, watching your video i just wondered why you didn't use the turnbuckle and cable to replace the come along once the tree was pulled together. The straps wouldn't damage the tree and they're not expensive, two straps, one turnbuckle, job done?

I can see that you're a hard worker who takes pride in what he does, but there are better ways of fixing splits in trees. For one thing, you drilled a lot of holes in those trees, and left them unsealed which is very invasive and can kill them. Also, seeing all that cabling in the trees is unsightly. I'm not an arborist, but I came up with a method of fixing trees which I feel gives the greatest possible protection to the tree while fixing it. Also, you will not see the repair after a few years. I have also seen other people doing examples of this method since. I will try to describe this the best I can without pictures. My method as follows... First, take 3 pieces of 2X4 cut to fit around the limb where you will want to pull them together and screw the 3 pieces of wood together to make a U shape. You will need two of these of course. Then you can use your cabling by putting the cable around the blocks you just made instead of through the limbs. This completely protects the limbs while you are doing the permanent repair and can be removed when completed. This is also a great method to use if you need to permanently support a limb or tree from possible damage to a structure. After you have done this and pulled the limbs together to close the split, you are ready for step 2. For as long and wide as the split is, you will want to drill through the tree where the split is spacing the bolts about every 7 inches or so. For larger limbs or near the main trunk, do this two by two at each level For thinner limbs, stagger the holes side to side so that the split gets held together as evenly as possible. Now that you have your holes drilled, place half inch thick galvanized screw rods or bolts through the holes making them just long enough to start you washers and nuts on each side. Use the biggest and thickest washers you can. Then you just tighten them all up as much as you can, and cut off any excess ends to flush them up with the bark. Then, use some flexible filler or cement to fill the ends of the holes. Try to use something latex based, as to stay away from possibly harmful chemicals. This will prevent any tree disease, bugs and rot while the holes are healing. As this is occurring, the tree will simply push the filler/cement out as the wound closes itself. When you are finished, you can completely removed your temporary cabling. For very large limbs, I recommend leaving them on until the tree has healed itself completely. After a few of years, the cement will be pushed out, and the split should be healed. Nothing is visible, and you've made the tree stronger! I have done this method numerous times, and it always worked perfectly!

Hey DaddyKirbs great video I appreciate you posting this. I have extensive experience with rigging and rigging hardware and you did a pretty good job. One thing I'd like to mention to you to keep all of your hard work lasting a lifetime is at 22:56 in your video you can see your eyebolt and cable; the eyebolt itself should be inline with the direction of pull, the way it is set in the video is they are almost perpendicular to each other. Give that eye bolt a little bit of a turn clockwise and it will make your connection stronger, what will end up happening is overtime the eye bolt will bend over. By turning it you will have a lot more strength and less chance of bending the eye bolt. On a side note eye bolts are really only rated to be use in a vertical pull or inside of 45 degrees of vertical, but for this application I don't believe you will have an issue. Great video thanks again!

Blake, I certainly hope that your method works! We tried something similar with a mimosa tree in our yard. Ended up removing some of the heavier branches, but in the end, took one half of the split off and sealed the wound. Fortunately, trees can be very resilient and started sprouting new growth from the side we cut off. I do suggest some manner of protection for the area where the split occurred to prevent bug infestation. You can use a number of things to seal it. On trees of this size, we have used a weak cement mixture, melted wax or a spray-on pruning type sealer. We sometimes also use a tether around the split area that is loose enough not to girdle the tree. Both reduce the chances that the split will get bigger during winter and spring.

Nice work on saving the trees. You may want to seal all of the wounds to keep the insects out. Thanks Blake for the instruction. When rigging wire rope and using the rope clips (Bulldogs) the saddle part always needs to go on the live side, that is the opposite to how you did. The load side uses the saddle design to prevent slipping. "Never put a saddle on a dead horse" I was told. This is for "load" applications and is correct practice, for you I doubt it will fail. One of the things my dad loves to do is grafting and propagating flowers, trees, etc. We recently ordered some grape vines, and some more fruit trees. We have had this one apple tree for about a year and a half now and it has really bright green leaves. Very nice job. I could have saved you a couple of steps, but good job! Remember, every hole you put in the tree represents a health risk in the tree's future. No need for the lag bolts to pin the iron plates. Next, when pruning (pruning anything, especially trees) don't leave a stub. That will die, dry, crack and avail the tree to several kinds of bad influence to gain entry. Eye bolts that are too long are not a problem. You don't need the inner iron plates anyway. There's a fine video on this at "arboristBlairGlenn"" " here in KZbin. He is a wise and gentle man, very capable in all facets of tree work. Please check him out, just the way I spelled it.

You can't leave those big branch stubs on your repaired tree. The bark will never heal over the stubs and rot will eventually go into the trunk. Cut the stubs just toward the branch end of the growth ring where new growth will cover the flat cut.

By putting plates on both sides of the branch and thighen the nuts the tree has no place to grow. The outside plate is all you need, and it doesn’t matter if it moves. If you had connected the eyebolt and the turn buckle you would not need the second cable. I ran a cable through the tree limbs and used a TB to tighten the cable. Also put pieces of wood under the cable to protect the tree, it is splitting in the center of the trunk about 24”. I was watching you to see what to use to fill in between the 2sets of limbs. I feel you did a lot of unnecessary work on your repairs, I hope everything work out for you. Stay safe

I think the steel plates are a bit of overkill and the plate would only have to be on the outside of each branch. The plate doesn't need additional attachment as you want to minimize the number of holes, which minimizes the opportunities for rot and infestation. A large 2-1/2" fender washer is usually adequate and will eventually become encapsulated by the tree. Any tree that has spent 50 years growing deserves an opportunity to carry on.

The long eye bolts would’ve worked… just tighten the nut all the way you can and let the extra length be on the eye end. Not a problem…

Well, if the trees are rotten enough split in one area it is a matter of time until it rots out and splits somewhere else. If you insist on repair, cut off the split branch and try to bolt/ bind the trunk from the split downward. I hope no one is injured by falling branches. Water is the culprit and saddles tend to rot. Nature is telling you something.

Your idea is good, your methods are not. The washers are needed, but what you do is drill your eyebolt-hole through (1/2" hole, for example) the limb and then drill a larger hole (maybe two inches, for example) on the far side, but this time don't go through. Just go maybe 1/4" or 3/8" deep. The diameter should be the same or slightly larger then your washer. This will allow the washer to sink slightly into the tree and enable the tree to grow over the washer completely. With your method, you used large invasive plates that will end up girdling the branch. It may prolong the trees life by preventing the split, but its a short-term fix, which is unfortunate with all the work you did. But just for future reference, you might benefit from watching a few tree bracing/cabling videos even on KZbin before taking on your next tree. Also, your pruning is pretty rough, you might want to watch a couple KZbin videos to learn proper pruning techniques. Flush cuts are bad, but so is leaving stubs. It prevents the tree from compartmentalizing properly. That tree has a nasty cavity that affects its integrity, but if it's not somewhere that it can cause damage when it fails (I.E. buildings, people, vehicles, etc.) then I'm glad you're trying to save it, it has a lot of character. You have good intentions, but I hope you'll consider pruning it and possibly rebracing it. Take care.

Why are you drilling so many holes in such a small tree/branch? Also, you bought way too much hardware, when a pair of counter-threaded J hooks would have done. Even if you'd wanted to penetrate through the limb, one or two ratchets on the come-along would have been enough to tension the cable w.out turn buckles.

I think I would plant trees to take the place of these trees and as soon as the new trees reach a good size, I would remove these potentially lethal trees!

Instead of drilling through the tree why not strap it around you might kill the branches that you drilled through

Daniel Green Thank you for your link and warning. Another viewer pointed this out today. His comments were blocked for using profanity. It's funny, I read your comment 3 weeks ago and didn't really understand the "never saddle a dead horse". Well, I guess it was good that the second viewer pointed this out too. Now I got it through my thick skull. Annotations were added to warn other viewers of my mistake.

I love men. They are always doing stuff that only they could do or even think of doing. Ladies, (which I am one) stop with your thinking you can do anything a man can do, cause we can't. They do stuff us women would never think about doing let alone do it.
