Redundant work happens a lot when you’re not sure if you’re correct on what you’re about to do so you do a little extra to make absolute sure that nothing wrong will happen. At least for me I’m only 21 and have started a business so I’m doing everything possible to make sure everything goes perfect. I worked at 2 extremely large tree companies since I was 16 and in that little time I saw a lot go wrong and I strive to do not only better but do everything you need to do to make sure the job goes as planned. And that might call for half hitches on every limb if it makes you comfortable as a climber.

Might make qualified arborists cringe but im starting to climb and do a few jobs for friends and on my own property, been watching youtube videos basically every day for about a year. Im making sure that im not going above my skill level or doing anything over powerlines etc. But man i love it, would be interesting to hear your opionion on people getting out there and doing this kinda work as a hobbie or without going through the classroom and getting the certification etc.
@Billster19559 ай бұрын
That's how I got started when I was 65 on a Monkey Beaver Saddle. Practiced climbing my oak, cottonwood, and elm. Then, I took a couple of them down. Then, I helped a few neighbors. At 66, I started my solo tree service. I'm 68 now, and I prune or remove 60 trees each year solo. I love this work, and it keeps me fit. I always climb with two positioning lanyards and a climb line in case I accidently cut one. So far, so good. I also don't get in a hurry. A 70' white pine was my tallest removal this year. Keep reading and watching others. There's always more to learn. Stay safe.

I don't know to many people that get isa certified before they start climbing its normally the opposite. If you plan I pruning then you need to get the isa study gide and read it so you have a basic understanding of how a tree works so you can make informed decisions for the trees overall health.

I used to do the timber hitch thing when cutting branches because that's what everyone seemed to be doing. But within a year it became obvious to me that a single loop worked fine in almost all cases. Saves time, but also helps keep my hands from fatiguing and cramping up as I'm getting older.

The other reason for the half hitch when rigging that you didn't mention is that it can reduce the load on the carabiner by almost half. Not an issue for small stuff but it sure makes a difference in heavier logs when the crab is being cross loaded.

Probably one of my fav vids amongst every other one you put out. I was up in a tall beech tree and it was leaning over a shed pretty far. It was super solid and had no decay but it was just getting super slim and i felt bad not being able to keep going up further and also just keeping my climb line up there and using it to pull down the tree but i was working by myself and have not had that much climbing experience so far on anything other that pines. What im trying to convey is that your expierience and wisdom really rub of on me and i feel like your videos are some of my most looked forward to and cherished if i were to look back on in 10-20 years. Mr . Hunicke, when climbing drt would a rope sheath for the first few feet of rope on your eye splice end help with always grabbing the "right" end if the rope? I've just noticed that a lot of climbers grab both legs and have to separate them to find out which is the right side to pull. Hope this makes sense. I found myself wondering why the term "flatness" seemed so familiar, Then I remembered as a former commercial HVAC tech that I used to toss burned out 2 hp condenser fan motors from the top of equipment rooms to the ground and only when the motor axis was perfectly parallel to the ground did one get the very satisfying thump of flatness, I would strive for that every time. So flatness is not entirely unique to the life of an arborist.
