The actual damage was very minimal in terms of typical tornado damage (I grew up in the Midwest - I am familiar), but the news stations all reacted to the potential for damage because of the rarity of the event since even minimal tornado damage here can cause a high amount of severe injuries or loss of life due to the population density where it hit. It's the 6th largest metro area in the country.
