The Ironwood, Carpinus caroliniana can appear similar, so can the Hornbeam, Ostrya virginiana. The seeds are much different though.

That poor beech, planted way too deep, no root flare at all and 3 co-dominant leaders.

"Beechwood aged" , is a common term used by the beer and whiskey industry. Splits irregular , but burns very well. A magnificent tree harboring wildlife in its hollows. Morels seem to abound beneath beech.

The bark is not always smooth, in cases of trees infected with beech bark disease.
