They're are plenty of native maples to plant instead of the invasive norway maple. I'm gonna get rid of the big invasive and its saplings behind my house

Great for shade, ok firewood, cut it down, plant a sugar maple

It's a noxious weed that escapes cultivation.

It should never be planted. Fortunately, its propagation is now prohibited here. It does, in fact, kill anything below it. It's seedling take like wildfire and are tough to remove, even early on. I have to wonder how that grass is growing underneath the tree in the video. I so much wish I could afford to have the trees that came with the yard removed. They are at least 30 years old. The ground beneath is nearly barren. I do appreciate the beneficial aspects to most any tree - and around here, people do not plant them. And the sap makes a tasty syrup. Beautiful color in the fall. I want them gone.

Jakeornot Norway maple leaves do not turn to beautiful colours in the fall. They may brown or even yellow a bit but most of its leaves will be green when they fall. One sure way to tell whether or not you have a Norway maple is to check if there is a white latex when you break the leaf's stem. If it's white, then it's a Norway. Other maples have a clear sap. There is a cultivar of the Norway maple (Crimson King) that has maroon red foliage all summer long. Its leaves turn a dull brownish yellow in the fall.

At least you can enjoy more time with the foliage by a couple months unlike sugar maples that are bare by September.

Don, I've watched almost all your tree vids and think they're great. But what I'd REALLY like to see is your GREATEST BLOOPERS vid!! You know, where you get stung by a bee, stumble backward over a tombstone, branch falls on you, get photo-bombed, etc...!!!
@jakeornot63064 жыл бұрын
You may watch the videos, but if anything was sinking in, you would find that there is sufficient adventure in studying the plants and trees, and growing them. But, no. You want harm to come to individuals for your enjoyment. I mean, when you have to shorten the word, "videos" to "vids"...that says a great deal. Sophomoric; and can't get pleasure without seeing pain inflicted.

Please define "short life" of the Norway maple. Please show the bark. I appreciate the petiole milk ID, and the sumara differentiation.

We have three growing on our lot here in zone 4/5 line in So. Minnesota, planted circa 1965, so 55 years ago. One has been rotting away for 20 years and is all but dead, and the other two in decline, maybe last another 20 years. So lifespan of 60-75 years or so in our cases. Not great trees. Form not that good, large branches fall off, trunks rotting from the insides, bark kind of ugly. Very invasive - they spring up everywhere on our property. I can see why they were planted, though - there is a variety that has maroon foliage - quite attractive. Sugar maple is a much better choice in my opinion.

Tamed Norway maples have an average lifespan of 40-60 years. But ones that grow in wild untouched woods can live anywhere from 130 to over 200 years.

You should mention it’s invasive throughout the northeast. Never plant this tree

My least favourite tree, they should all be eradicated and replaced with native trees

What’s bad about it though they actually look nice and are tougher than other maples

One can never be too harsh when speaking about these trees. I turned the ones growing in my yard into firewood. I’m still pulling little seedlings from the woods surrounding my backyard. These trees invade natural areas at an alarming rate, displacing the natives trying to get a foothold in the understory. I hate everything about them. Even when processing them for firewood, they have a weird, almost synthetic chemical smell. Get rid of these things and plant sugar maples, red maples, even a twisted boxelder is better than these garbage trees 🤔

Wow man you really hate those trees 😢
@ericwanderweg8525 Жыл бұрын
@@Paul-kd3ui Well… yeah 🙂 They don’t contribute anything to the ecosystem here. Quite the opposite actually. They’re fine as city street trees…. Until they get too big and start buckling the sidewalks. Or their seeds spread into natural areas and they take over. I’m sure they’re fine in Europe where they belong.

It’s alright, I just plant more of them in my yard lol
