It's also great as mechanical advantage for pulling trees over in a 3/1 setup. One guy can put a lot of force on a line, then hold that load with minimal effort. Two L1D pulleys in series adds more friction for a double whip.

Not having seen it in use. How do you pull up if it doesn't rotate that direction

It's a one way pulley so it moves when you pull one way and locks the other way which provides friction
