UPDATE: I have made a 2022 version of this video. Correction to video: The Dual Sport 1 actually uses a freewheel, not a cassette. Cassettes are typically lighter, more expensive, and more upgradable.

Why are they using freewheel? That's like a Walmart/Target bike. I'm sure they work. I guess these bikes are for the typical "mom/dad types".

For a freewheel I think the bike is a bit expensive. I understand this is intended to be commuter bike with some light mountain biking. The configuration seems perfect for a gravel bike.

I mean is this a deal-breaker? In the market now and have gone as far as creating a spreadsheet to sort out all the differences. I think I have OCD! Mechanical vs hydraulic. Tourney vs Acera etc. It's making me crazy! The best part? I can't even find any of these bikes b/c of the pandemic.

I just bought a DS 3 and love it. I already own a 2nd gen Domane SLR6 and a 2012 Madone. I got the DS for 3 reasons. 1. Riding with my wife when she rides her Townie. My other two bikes are just too fast plus I have to get all kitted up to ride them, so easier spur of the moment type riding with the Mrs. 2. I like just deciding to ride a bike in the way I did as a kid, just hop and ride around for a while...the DS is great for that. 3. Gravel, dirt roads, and light trails. I don't have an interest in technical mountain biking but I do like to buzz down fire roads, gravel roads, and the like. If it weren't for 1 & 2 I would have just gotten a gravel bike. For me the DS satisfies many of my personal requirements. Its a fun bike that isn't too fussy...just hop on a go for a spin.

First time viewer. This video was awesome! I own a Marlin 5, and bought it on a whim, just because I love bikes! (Bike #5) I am so glad I did! It is such a good road fitness bike. I can’t get over how FAST it is on pavement. I ride my Marlin on 25-35 mile rides through our park & river bike paths, and always extend my ride up to the Friant Dam here in Fresno, California. It’s a bit of a tank up the hills, but the gearing is low enough to make it up! I just love it. A great all-around bike for literally anyone!

I agree! I haven’t ridden a bike in around 15 years and when I jumped on the DS2 today it just felt so natural and right. Before riding that I tried a Talon 1 and a Roam 4. Roam 4 because they didn’t have any other Roam, was more just for a feel and for me the DS blew them both out the water. Kind of regret not trying the Marlin though as that was on my list as well. But after riding the DS I kind of forgot about it 😅 Can’t wait till I pick it up tomorrow!

Once again, great vid. This is exactly what I do with the customers in the store. Show the DS first, then sell them on the Marlin 5 or 6. The Marlin 6 is a great deal for $650. All the gears you need to ride on road and off. Plus you can actually use it for trail riding. However, after showing my customers the Marlin 6, I usually end up selling them the 2021 Roscoe 6. A little more money but so much value. Tubeless tires, dropper seatpost, bigger tires, better suspension, 1x drivetrain, etc. Thanks again for a great vid.

Great video! I've been looking for a direct comparison video between the 2 styles and you provided it! To be more specific on the models, though, I'm looking directly at the DS2 vs Marlin 6. Initially, I thought I was going to just be primarily a rails to trails / street rider w/the occasional off-road dirt trail but this summer has taught me I may need a little more than just a road-centric bike. My biggest concern, however, is comfort as I have some back and neck issues and my current mtb showed me that leaning forward for too long just causes a lot of pain there as well as on my wrists. I guess I won't know which is the better choice till I actually get to test either out but I've been leaning toward the DS2. I just need a bike shop near me to actually get some bikes in. Last time I called, they told me they weren't getting new ones till August. Your video has me getting the phone ready to call and see if any shipped early! Thanks again for the vids! Great content!

@@TalalipopMTB I went w/the DS3 primarily because I was able to get it immediately despite having to travel over 2 hours away to the store that had it! Love the bike and after sitting on a Marlin for a few minutes, glad I made the decision I did. It's been a great bike and I'm still watching your other comparison videos. Very informative! An idea to think about for future stuff would be accessories or upgrades you can do w/different series of bikes. For example, I'd like to look at getting slightly wider tires for my bike someday but I'm not sure what the max would be that would fit. Anyway, thanks again! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for your videos! They are well done. The Trek Marlin 5 was a good bike for me as i started MTBing again. The road or paved trails it was very good in speed and fun. On medium off road trails it was a nice ride as well. It only lasted about a year and the crank and derailer started to break regularly. They are also hard to replace because of the 8/9 cassette is rarer and only the Acera level offer replacement for the tourney... you cant put on a Deore without replacing the cassette. The frame is excellent though as well as the seat and breaks. I would get the highest marlin next time as a beginner bike because the lower end drive train components are not worth it in heavy use.

Thanks for the vid. Sure helped me make a decision... I'm looking to upgrade from my current hybrid and wasn't sure if I wanted to go with another hybrid vs full mountain bike that also rides well on the road. I'm a casual, fitness rider, and I don't go on any trails (yet); I just do laps around town but it can get bumpy in certain areas. I prefer hybrid's over road bikes because it's a bit more comfortable & robust. However (like I mentioned), these bikes are so similar that I wasn't sure if I could get away with getting the Marlin for the off-road capabilities but still using it primarily on the road. After watching this vid, think I'll stick with hybrid and go with the Dual Sport.

Great Videos, Talalipop! I'm completely torn on whether or not to buy a DS3. I wanted the DS4, but I've called every bike shop within several hundred miles and nobody has them. Trek support said there won't be any more stock for 2021. A LBS is getting a shipment of DS3s next month, though. The reason I'm torn is that I'm buying this bike to ride mostly rail-grade trails, which are generally very compacted peat, with a little gravel, but not much. I ride a Diamondback Hybrid on them today, and it works well. If I go the MTB route, I would do the X-Calibur for the better, lighter frame, and replace the wheels with narrower ones, but I'm wondering if the DS3 might be better overall for the type of trails I ride. Thoughts?

Not perfect but looks good and will be hidden by the front chain set. In all I'm spending about £200 to restore this neglected bike to get it back on the road. The 2020 module is not much different than the 2016 in terms of spec. Your video was very helpful for me and it will be perfect for my needs 👍🙏

@@aroindustries4895 did you decide on either? I'd say go for the Marlin, which is probably better to ride on pavement than the DS is to ride on rough terrain. I went back and forth as well. Planning on a Marlin 7, just waiting on it to become available.

If you get a verve at least get the verve 2, has suspension in the seat and adjustable handlebars. If you get dualsport, at least get the dualsport 2. It has a lockout for front suspension so when on a flat road it rides a lot better, and better components.

Not trying to be mean, but you’re simply not riding at the level where you need more powerful brakes yet. As your average speed and skill increase, you’ll eventually find that the brakes aren’t strong enough, or that they overheat. Keep riding and you’ll get there in no time!

This review is most timely. I previously was a roadie for over a decade and decided to try the Trek Marlin 5 because new Road Bikes are now out of my price range. The Marlin is obviously heavier but smoother and I don’t have to look for every nook and cranny in the roadway - but-it-was-expectedly-slow. The Dual Sport or FX Sport 4 ($1,799.99) and FX 6 ($2,799) are both Carbon, have more speed and is somewhere in the middle on smoothness but you are in a much more upright position. Choices, choices!

@CristianHernandez-mz5xp
@CristianHernandez-mz5xp 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say with the marlin for the same price you get a wider range of activities. It is true that dual sport weighs less but it is also due to the tires mostly. The freeweel cassette only has 14 teeth at its fastest, while the marlin has 12 teeth, seems little different but it is a big difference. Also you can always buy better cassettes that are much more durable and lighter than freewheel cassettes. It has hydraulic brakes which are generally better than mechanical ones, because you basically need to adjust them periodically and if you do commuting it can be a bit boring. Personally I also find the marlin cokpit an advantage. Its levers are separate and in the dual sport not. In case of failure, you have to change two pieces instead of one. With the marlin cokpit you can always replace them one by one even with different brands. The same thing happens if you want to change to a monoplate, you only need to remove one lever. Even with the marlin you can change the tire for a thinner tire, reducing its weight equally and adapting it to the road for commuting and with dual sport, I doubt it. I would say this in general: Only if you want a bike to use casually would you choose the dual sport. If you want a bike for the future with a range of uses beyond commuting, the marlin is much better because of its better compatibility. Summary. Dual sport: Use only for commuting and not much else. Marlin: Use for commuting and a little bit more . By the way great video, I hope you keep doing more so that you transmit the information very nicely. Gracias!

Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. I am trying to get back into bicycling and had no idea it was this complicated. As kids we just got on a bike and had fun with it. In fact, we didn't always have brakes at all and if you didn't want people to ask to ride your bike you just took the seat off and rode it standing up. Just hope to goodness you don't forget that you don't have a seat LOL!! Once I go back to work I intend on commuting with my bike but I also want the versatility to be able to go on some trails as well so understanding more about the Marlin made it more appealing to me. Being that both have suspension what does that entail as far as maintenance is concerned?
@CristianHernandez-mz5xp
@CristianHernandez-mz5xp 3 жыл бұрын
@@swift7169 Well, the only major difference between the two bikes is basically that one has mechanical and one has hydraulic brakes. However, if you're looking for simplicity in maintenance, I'd say Marlin 5 with the cassette. The freewheel (which is not the same as the cassette) is much simpler to change but much harder to clean. In fact you should not put water inside it because the grease in the bearings will be lost. Also the hydraulic brake does not need much maintenance, just replace the brake pads and fluid at least every year. The mechanical brake should be checked monthly for pads and cables, especially if they are exposed. I would say that the Marlin 5 is more reliable.

I always had mountain bikes as a kid but now I'm torn if I want a hybrid or mountain bike. I'm okay with spending over a grand so I was looking at the x Caliber. But because it's not an active Hobby I don't know if I would get my money's worth I'm thinking about Getting both a dual sport and a Marlin to get started and seeing which one I gravitate towards more and then upgrading down the line from there. Do you happen to have an opinion?
@TalalipopMTB
@TalalipopMTB 3 жыл бұрын
Nice!! In my opinion the marlin series would be better if you want to ride trails more often, but if you’re going to stay on the road more or not really ride intermediate/difficult trails then you don’t really need the full on mountain bike. I’ve had some people comment on my videos saying that they got a marlin and just put thinner tires on it for road use, so that could work as well. But yeah you could always just get a cheaper one to check it out and then trade it in for a different one if your shop let’s you do that!
