The Trek Roscoe has been completely redesigned for 2022. Today we take a close look at what we know, and I share my initial impressions with what we find online. It's longer, lower, slacker, has room for 29x2.6, and it looks ready to party. I'm really excited about these changes. Follow along to see what I think of it at a first glance.

This one would work as a podcast if you don't feel like watching. I like what trek is doing here. I have a feeling it's going to be pretty stiff, but that's what you get when you build it to take a 300lb rider.

The internal cable routing for this frame looks to be the same solution that they use on their full suspension bikes. On the underside of the downtube they have a zip tie that runs through a clip that collects the cables and keeps them from rattling around inside the frame. It is just an open tube so it's not easy to route the cables when you change housing, but it keeps it quiet.

Trek didn't understand that it was possible to build a hardtail without XC geo. The previous Roscoe was an 29er XC frame called X-Caliber with a longer fork and 27+ tyres. Hence the super slack seat angle

Your review has helped me decide on which bike to buy. I am a road bike cyclist for over over 5 years now and I love it. I was always interested in mountain biking but did not know much about them. I used to have a Walmart MTB probably same as everyone. It was heavy and not set up right for me. So, I decided to go ahead and buy a proper Mountain Bike. It took me about 3 months researching on kinds, styles, & brands. I found that I am interested more in Trail riding and HardTail bikes. You Tube and specially your channel was a great influence on the decision I took. I had my eye on Salsa timber jack, Giant Fathom, & Trek Roscoe. The first two brands were not available and they would take a while to get them. I have a Trek store near me so I decided to visit. I test road a Roscoe 7 and I immediately fell in love. I felt like a kid again. The specs are amazing for the price and the 29 wheels rolls smooth. The test ride was different coming from a road bike. It was like riding a Cadillac with a hint of a Corvette. smooth and comfortable but rowdy when needed. I am 5'6'' 46 years old male, the sizing chart place me in the end of small and in the middle of a medium. The sales person suggested a Medium for better stretch and not feeling cramped. I am glad I went with the medium, its better fit for me. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for all the informative videos. Keep up the good work.

@@HShaud totally right, I keep seeing Marlins on Facebook marketplace, "barely used," being sold for more than the retail price. People either don't know what they're worth or are trying to profit off the unavailability. The old Roscoe wasn't actually a bad bike, it just didn't seem like Trek cared much about the genre. Thanks for this! I am a novice female rider who didn't start until age 54 two years ago. Before that I had only owned one "mountain" bike -- a Trek 730 rigid steel job that I bought new in 1988 for around $700. It rode like a tank and I _never_ took it on trails; in fact, I didn't know anyone who rode trails back then. When I went shopping at my LBS in July 2019 I had no idea what I was looking for, but I ended up buying the 2020 Roscoe 7 women's model. It came with 27.5 mid-fat tires up through size M, which is what I ended up buying, and it's been the perfect beginner bike for me. I live very close to 100+ miles of multi-use trails, many of which are steep and very rocky. While I'm no shredder, I have learned a ton and am getting better. I was hoping to see a review of a Roscoe on your channel.

Looking forward to the review! Just wanted to give you a shoutout for helping me with the patreon service, put nearly 300 miles on the Chameleon you suggested I buy. You said aluminum but I couldn't get one in before the riding season but the LBS had a carbon 2020 model built up with better components that I scored for a few hundred more than the top trim aluminum. Very pleased and it works for me as I'm a lighter rider. Thanks again!

That's the only thing I really don't like about my '20 Roscoe 8, the rear axle not being a boost thru-axle. Other than that it's been a fantastic bike for me since I purchased it last year in May before all the shops ran out. If and when I replace my current bike, this new Roscoe 9 will definitely be on my list, but I am not a rowdy rider, no jumps/drops anymore....."Wheels on the ground kinda guy" at 54 yrs old and way too many past injuries and 6 concussions. I do ride technical trails with difficult rock climbs and descents and love the 27+, glad Trek at least put a 2.6 on the new iteration. I had to add, I have never ever had a quick release fail in 30+ yrs of mtb riding, but I agree that upgrading the older Roscoe wheelset is limited. Hope Pro4 hubs are the best option from what I have seen
@RideYearRound
@RideYearRound 3 жыл бұрын
The more I ride 2.6, the more I agree with you on it as a tire size. It's not quite big enough to have the float and feel of a real plus tire, but it's not light or narrow enough to ride like a 2.4. I'm glad it's there because I hope the industry is always experimenting with new things...I'd just rather just go up to a 2.8 or 3.0 in most cases.

Im still having good fun on the 2021 roscoe 8 after 3000kms mtbiking and commuting. Not sure if i would upgrade to the new 2022. I couldnt care less about upgrading wheels and I never have issues with the quick release regarding the qr in the back. It's good to see the roscoe is updated for those who want to upgrade wheels. Pricewise they've upped it a lot, roscoe 8 2021 was 1699,- euro, roscoe 8 now 2199,- euros. With the rear axle and bottom bracket the main different....?(excluding frame geo and the shock range on the rockshox gold 120 vs 140mm). That's definitely not worth 500 euro's more over the 2021 version imo. Thanks for reviewing, i enjoy your videos! Hope to see some nice riding vids of you again.

I work part time at a Trek dealer. We sell a ton (at least we did when we could get them) of entry level Marlins. Just like you, no Trek hardtail excited me personally. The high end XC stuff is awesome, but that is not for me. I took one look at this bike (Roscoe 9) and sent in a paper form to purchase my first Trek bike through their EP program. Too bad I will not see it until 4/23..... :-(. I think Trek markets to the masses and the the high end markets. I think the fact that those are the only bikes somewhat readily available at this point in time bears this out. Bikes in the middle seem to exist just to fill out the line. They also missed the boat entirely on the Adventure bike wave. The 920 was a good bike, but never promoted because the Stache based 1120 was their look good darling. It was full of parts that if you broke in the middle of nowhere, you were screwed, so serious adventure riders shied away from it. Now they have put wide tires and a nice paint job on a 520 and are calling it good. I love steel, but no thanks. I got a Salsa Fargo. Don't even get me started on the Checkpoint / Domane clones... They do have some really good stuff, but you have to be careful. Roscoe 6 is an excellent case in point. Customer service is awesome, the customer is number one. As part of our training, we are told to try to encourage them to get a bike they will still love 6 months down the road, and I think that is great. So, for me, whenever they become available, I will start my conversation with the Roscoe 7 and go up from there.

The Trek Roscoe was my first MTB and ignited a fire for biking I didn’t even know was there. I gained skills and developed the fundamentals but as I progressed, the 141 rear held me back. I was limited in upgrades and the QR would loosen out big drops or harsh landings. I’m glad they’ve finally went modern. I can’t say I’m not interested as there will be always be a special place in my heart for the Roscoe, my first love.

The wider (2.6”) tires is a regional thing I think. Here in WI, where Trek are designed, we have a TON of sand traps on our trails and 2.2-2.4 tires are mad scary on that stuff. Pretty sure they do the XT derailleur because that’s what’s visible to customers on the showroom floor. It’s hard to see the marking on the shifter-even more with the cassette. Sad, but this is what moves bikes. Also, I bet the SLX vs XT or NX vs GX derailleurs are hardly any difference in cost.

😊 Thanks for this review. I have been researching for about the last year to determine which trail hardtail I wanted to get. It came down to the Marin San Quentin 2 and the Trek Roscoe 7. I ended up with the Roscoe 7 mainly because of seeing your thought process in this video and the other reason being that my local Trek store had them in stock and I could demo them. I could not find a San Quentin 2 anywhere to demo. My Roscoe had a few changes due to the parts shortage, I ended up with Praxis CADET M24 | DM1X -OEM Crank, chain ring and bottom bracket in place of the Shimano parts, and the rims are e*Thirteen LG1 Enduro rims instead on the Bontrager Line TLR 30. I am a new Mountain Biker at 54 so for now I do not see the Rockshox Recon RL fork holding me back. I have so much to learn. I am thinking I will upgrade to a Pike at some point. I am also thinking up getting a higher engagement rear hub at some point. Again thanks for the very detailed look at the 2022/23 Trek Roscoe bikes.

That's really interesting. So, specialized did something similar with their most recent update on the diverge gravel, going from a very antiquated geo and tire clearance to something very modern, even ahead of some boutique brands. With Trek doing the same thing here on their Roscoe, is this going to be a one off modernization or will we see a bit of a philosophical change in the big brands wrt how they approach updates? Up till now, they've been ridiculously conservative.

I currently only own a Gravelbike (Trek Checkpoint SL) and I'm actually in the market for a good MTB to start out with. For me it has to be distinctly different from my Checkpoint and if I got an XC Bike that would be way to close to what my Checkpoint can already do. A fully would be too maintenance intensive for my taste, so, a hardtail trailbike with big shoes it is. I looked at the old Roscoe before and that weird, pretty much proprietary "Boost"141 killed it for me. This one on the other hand (The Roscoe 7) is pretty much EXACTLY what I was looking for. Time to start saving, so that I can hopefully afford one next year.

People wanting to run a rack on the rear better snap those up. I like the do-everything old Roscoe. Nothing against the new frame, but it should be a Stache and the old role is a valid market imo. The old Roscoe frame is on point for most riders most of the time - I can haul 60 lbs. of groceries on it without the bike getting weird and still feel good on trails in Wisconsin. The new frame looks great for a new purpose but it saddens me to see a void appearing in the market. "Mountian bikes" are relevant to city streets and flat states for general use and the "cheap" Roscoe filled that niche very well. The lack of rack mounts disturbs me.

I totally agree with you on your style of critiquing a bike & building it up the way you want with as little or as much parts as you want, as you stated though,”it has to make sense”. So with that said I’d choose the Roscoe 7 too, great platform to build on & could be easily built up to the performance of the Roscoe 9. I like your choice of fork too, a lot of adjustments to the rider, do you think a Marzoochi would be too much fork for the Roscoe platform? In addition even though this review/breakdown was done on the computer I feel it was spot on from the little bit of dabbling I’ve personally done on Trek. Thanks for this video

Same as Joe S... Not buying a Roscoe but watch with interest anyway. I learn something every time I watch one of your videos :). Two things in this one... First, the fork being so important (I kind of knew, but hadn't thought about it in specific terms). A few weeks ago I actually cancelled my MC AL V2 order in favour of the CrMo, mostly cause I hadn't noticed the upgrade in fork and brakes (and a couple other things) on the CrMo build compared to the AL. When I asked about getting the CrMo build on the AL it turned out to only be a hundred bucks cheaper than the CrMo so I just went for the CrMo. The other thing is internally routed cables (possibly) rattling. I would have never thought of that and yeah, I think that would drive me nuts.

Great first look, Steve. Not the biggest fan of trek but interesting bikes from big brands are appealing because you can get them all around the world. Great boutique bikes like the Spot or Yeti ARC are high on my list but just dont represent value in Australia. Im currently running a '21 Torrent S1 and agree with your review. It is a fun bike but it is a slow bike when not pointed downhill. Im sold on hardtails but looking for the perfect one now, i will say though my Torrent is one of the sexiest!

Too bad Trek didn't build this bike with clearance for at least 2.8 tires and with i35 rims. That would make it a "modern" Plus capable Stache.

Trek fanboy here, I've owned several Trek bikes and whatever tire size comes stock on the bike, I've always been able to go up at least one size. If it comes with 2.6, you can get a 2.8 on there. My rail came with 2.6 and I'm running 29x3 on front and rear. I had the old Roscoe with 27.5x2.8 and 27.5x3 would fit easily.

I keep thinking this bike might work for me and I can upgrade components as I break stuff. Then, I look at the spec sheet and am reminded of the 28h wheels and my 210-225 lb weight. Just not a good idea. A 32 mm Recon and 28h wheel set just tells me I'm gonna end up with new wheels and a fork rather quickly, so I may as well get the frame I want and build up, as usual lol. I still wanna ride one when they come in stock, though!

I've decide to buy a trail bike and I'm very interested in the new Roscoe (frame). In the Europe the new Roscoe is available in beautiful red too. I'm consider to upgrade all SLX parts to XT by the local LBS, so I pay only a upgrade price.

I have the 2019 Roscoe 8 already. Not ready to buy anything yet. I like the bike so far. I understand that replacing the fork would be a nice upgrade especially for my size. I am 6'5 270. I have the xxl version. I know the current fork is RockShox Judy Silver TK, Solo Air spring, rebound adjust, TurnKey hydraulic lockout, tapered steerer, G2 Geometry w/51 mm offset, Boost110, 120 mm travel (13.5: 100 mm travel). I saw a youtube video of a rockshock pike 140mm as a replacement. Didn't know what offset the shock had on it. Looking for recommendations.

My goodness bikes were expensive before but now it is crazy. At the time I bought my 2020 Fuse right before covid, the top trim was right around $2000. It had a Fox 34, dropper and I think GX. My Fuse Comp was under $1700 and was not even the lowest trim. Now you need to put up $1700 for the entry level Roscoe and the top trim is a $2700 bike? Wild...

So cool that this bike is getting so more attention. However you gave me a different perspective on it. I have a 2020 Roscoe 7 ( my first real MTB btw ) but I mainly use my’s as a cross country bike( I go really long distances ) , commuter (I’d installed a real rack ), and hopefully soon as a bikepacker. I love the fat 2.8 tires so I can ride on almost anything( including sand and snow ). I don’t think it was intended for this kind of stuff but does pretty well. However I don’t understand the problem with the rear axle can someone elaborate on that.

Great review, nice to finally see Trek join the fun hardtail bandwagon. The Roscoe 7 looks interesting, but I would probably go for an Orbea Laufey H10 for around the same price. The Z2 on the H10 would probably be really good for most entry to intermediate level riders. That way they can save a few bucks and put those towards tyres that are suited to their area's trails (if necessary ofcourse) or towards upgrading the rider contact points.

@@hardtailparty yeah, I can imagine the Laufey being way too harsh for Sedona. I live in the Netherlands however, no rocks or gnarly terain, just the occasional root patch and a lot of mud. It’s a great bike for our tracks. I’m really curious how the Roscoe will hold up when you get the opportunity to take one for a spin. For what I can see on the photo’s the tubing looks quite square, so hopefully the material allows for a bit of flex in the rear triangle.

Finally they got rid of the QR in the frame, or rather update the frame in general, as they were basically just really outdated, overforked XC frames with support for bigger tires. That, combined with Trek's high price point, is the main reason why I usually recommend to go for other bikes. Too bad they kept the old one for the cheapest model. Looks like they compensated on the XL model though, instead for going for a bigger built frame they went with lengthening the cranks. I feel that does not work out that well as it does not change the reach and increases the likelihood of pedal strikes, as the bb height stays the same (as it should). Great heat tube angle though, that's definitely in the right spot at 65 degrees to please all kinds of riders. Price point is still kinda mad, but I guess that's just the market right now. Kinda glad I started my built in 2020 - I kinda feel this will be the case even in 2022.

Honest question from a new rider. So many talk about these huge differences in bike feel and performance based such small changes in geometry. I don't really get it. Yesterday I test rode a specialized fuse in both small and medium. 420 vs 440 reach, less than an inch. I couldn't tell the difference. I guess I'm just not as experienced but when people talk about feeling a world of a difference over 20 mil, I can't help but feel like it's overblown. Now I have paralysis by analysis on which size to get because people go crazy over getting the perfect size. Any thoughts?
@hardtailparty

After you've been riding for a few years you'll start to notice the differences a lot more. Did you ride those on a trail, or in a parking lot?
@oklahotb3217
@oklahotb3217 3 жыл бұрын
I've only been riding for three years and change. Prior to mid 2019, I only had experience on two different bikes. I too looked at some of the claims with a skeptical eye, like is this just some Princess and the Pea deal going on. In the past two years, I've added and subtracted 7 more bikes to the stable, all different from one another. Chromoly steel, carbon, aluminum frames, older geometry, progressive geometry, Bikes from 69 to 65 degree head tube angles. Yes, there can be quite a noticeable difference, but you won't know, can't know, until you've ridden different bikes and have something to compare experiences to. I also had paralysis by analysis when picking my first bike. Soooo much info out there, so many standards, etc it is easy to get overwhelmed. If you have the opportunity to test ride bikes, do it. If you know folks with bikes your sized, see if they'll let you try them. Barring all of that, pick the one that feels the best and is a good choice for where you are going to do the majority of riding and the type of riding you are looking to do and get out there. That truly is the only way you find out.

16:36 My 2021 Norco Fluid HT1 cannot be beat for noisy rattly internal cabling. There is no way of securing the cable at either end due to the frame design at the BB and no grommets at the head end. I'm 1.80m with an 84cm inseam length so both M/L and L might fit.
