All your questions about the Empire will be answered in episode 1,2,3. Mark Hamill got into a serious car accident during the filming of this movie and had to undergo some facial reconstruction surgery and that's why he looks different. The messed up face he has is not cosmetic. The force and "Some kind of remote transmission". The Force whispers to you like Yoda said "Things you will see, other places, the past, the future". Ben Achieved Immortality through the force becoming a Force Ghost and preserving his knowledge. Lucas omitted the twist "I am your Father" from the script until the day of shooting to keep it from leaking. But once its out there and becomes a part of pop culture its impossible to avoid.

The reason they had Luke attacked at the start of the movie was due to Mark being in a horrific car accident between movies, it messed up his face so badly they weren't sure if they could fix it. Honestly in time his face healed almost perfectly, but he was still healing during the filming of Empire. So they did the monster attack at the start to explain why Mark had changed and seemed so injured for the film. By Jedi he looks a few more steps back to his normal self.

addendum..., there's been a little "urban legend" exaggeration over the years :- On January 11, 1977, Mark Hamill got into a car accident that fractured his nose and left cheekbone. If the accident had happened four months later, the news would have been in every paper around the world. But at the time, Hamill was still an unknown actor who had just finished being the lead in a yet-to-be-released sci-fi movie in which he wore all white and wielded a glowing sword. Hamill had to have cartilage taken from his ear to rebuild his nose. But when "Star Wars: A New Hope" opened on May 25, 1977, breaking box office records and making everyone involved - especially Hamill as Luke Skywalker - overnight sensations, little attention was made about Hamill's accident. However when the sequel to "A New Hope," 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," opened with Skywalker being mauled in the face by a Wampa, fans speculated that the scene was written because Hamill's face looked different after his accident. The rumor has become one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the "Star Wars" saga, 40 years after the film was released. Mark Hamill got in an accident after filming 'A New Hope' Speaking to Gossip Magazine in 1978 for the release of "Corvette Summer," which was released between "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back," Hamill spoke about the accident. "What happened was that I was on the wrong freeway," Hamill said. "I was way out in the sticks somewhere and there were no cars and no traffic, thank God. I was going about 65-70 mph... So yes I was speeding, going too fast for the conditions... and what happened, I think, was that I tried to negotiate an off-ramp and lost control, tumbled over, and went off the road. I fractured my nose and my cheek." Hamill also said in the interview that the next day he was supposed to do pick-up shots for "A New Hope" of scenes on Tatooine. This led to director George Lucas having to use a double, though the shots were for scenes where you wouldn't see Hamill's face.

1980 - i’m five years old. My grandfather takes me to see this movie. Grown adults were screaming “HE’S LYING!” at Darth Vader when the reveal happened. It’s just pandemonium- people are losing their minds. And i had no idea movies could potentially not have a happy ending. It was a crazy experience. Yeah, this was one of the most anticipated movies ever and it straight up denied the heroes a happy ending. Everybody loses, Han is captured, possibly dead, Luke fights Vader, loses, gets his hand cut off, almost falls to his death, and they barely escape with their lives. The Empire is at large, the heroes are on the run, hope is lost. That's where they choose to end the movie. It's bold, it really projects confidence, like the writers/director are gambling that you will be so invested that you'll wait and see the next one just to get the true conclusion to the story. Obviously they were right and it was a huge success. I think they challenged the Hollywood formula tbh, they deliberately said we are not making this movie a self-contained story, it's just the next PART of the story, if you want the real ending you have to see the next one. Star Wars walked so other stories like the Marvel Universe could run

Okay there's one very subtle motion that Lando does after Vader alters the deal on Lando and walks away to prepare for Luke's arrival. Not only were audiences in 1980 astonished hearing that line, most of the cast and crew were surprised, too. The line in the printed scripts which David Prowse (the actor in the Vader suit) said during filming was "Obi-Wan killed your father". George Lucas and director Irvin Kershner pulled Mark Hamill aside 10 minutes before shooting the scene, told him what James Earl Jones would actually be saying in the dub and to react to that and not tell anyone for two years.

I can imagine maybe Luke's father was Vader's friend, and maybe he turned to the Dark side, so Obi Wan killed him, which led Darth Vader to hate him, it would explain why he has become so ruthless and hardened, like he will stop at nothing to get his revenge. Luke seeing his own face in the mask of Vader was a clue about his lineage, but most viewers perceive that scene as a warning that Luke could become another Vader, which is also valid. Another clue was his uncle and aunt's conversation from the first film talking about Luke having too much of his father in him. "That's what I'm afraid of." That's usually understood to mean that they're worried Luke would get himself killed acting the hero, just like his father. Again, also valid, but there was a deeper context because his uncle and aunt both knew the real story behind Vader. We don't learn it until later.

Each of the movies you've seen so far include traps that don't work if the stormtroopers actually shoot their targets. We even get a demonstration (off-screen but implied and in the subtext of the dialog) of what happens when the Rebellion actually fights the stormtroopers head to head: They get shredded. It took the Stormtroopers MINUTES to overrun the outer defenses and break into the base. There's a *reason* that the instant they figured out that the probe droid had noticed them, that the General gave the order to begin the evacuation. They -knew- there was no way for them to stand and fight against the Stormstroopers. They had a collapsing defensive strategy, to hold off the Imperials as long as possible, and the instant they start getting overrun, to retreat to the next defensive line and do it all over again. It's a delaying strategy, one based on the idea that you are going to lose, because the opposition is utterly overwhelming. That is the fear that the Stormtrooper inspired. In Star Wars, and in real life.

You will learn the answers to many of your questions as you see the rest of the story. As for Lando, the actor is Billy Dee Williams, who has an extensive list of movie credits to his name. 1) Think of the Empire as similar to Rome. It started as a republic, composed of a confederation of every settled planet. Then, after a series of events, the Galactic Senate reached a crisis that led them to appoint a Chancellor, who centralized power and became The Emperor (basically, what Caesar did). The Senate is based on a planet called Coruscant, but the empire's military is spread across the galaxy. 2) The asteroid trope started with this scene in Star Wars and, arguably from Dune with the Navigators. 3) Vader doesn't wear the suit for fun or intimidation. He got massively f-ed up earlier in life, as you could see from the back of his head. The rest of him doesn't look much better. 4) The force doesn't care about distance. Think of the force as a Jungian concept, where everything is connected with everything else, regardless of distance or situation. Force ghosts can work literally anywhere in the galaxy, as long as there is a person force sensitive enough to interact with them there. Similarly, someone like Yoda can look across massive distances. 5) Vader is a Sith, not a Jedi, and his abilities are suited to combat. Not all force users have the same powers, and so Yoda can do things that Vadar could never even hope to attempt. Conversely, Vader has powers that Yoda will never use because they are based in the dark side. 6) The unearned confidence of people who learn the basics is called the "Dunning Kruger effect" 7) Coincidence and luck are really much less of a factor with force users. They instinctually sense things going on from a distance, and so their instincts tend to lead them towards their goals. Literally, the universe itself is doing them a solid and making things work out for them. Of course, this works both ways, as the universe doesn't discriminate between light and dark side force users, and so the Sith have the same advantage as the Jedi.

The reason that the Stormtroopers constantly miss in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back is because Darth Vader ordered them too. In A New Hope, they placed a tracker on the Millenium Falcon, so they let them escape, while also posing as a threat, even when they weren't. The reason that they have bad aim in this movie is because Vader wants to keep them alive in order to lure in Luke. In The Return Of The Jedi, they become a lot more deadly, and in the first scene of A New Hope, they are shooting at Leia's men before they escape, and they barely miss a shot. They only really have bad aim when the main characters are able to indirectly benefit the Empire.

Luke's "luck" and premonition of the truth of Vader's revelation is all the force. He didn't jump expecting to die, but was able to control his fall to aim himself at the vent. He was able to slow himself in the vent. He was able to reach out with the force to Leia when he was hanging on for dear life. The vision in the cave was a clue for what he would eventually find out. Jedi can't fly, but if he should be able to levitate his fighter, he can use the force to levitate himself for performing some significant feats. Vader doesn't know for sure that Obi Wan trained Luke, but he doesn't know about Yoda. Since he saw them together at the Death Star and sensed that the force was strong with Luke he had to have assumed that Obi Wan had already trained Luke by that time. You'll learn more about why it's a natural assumption when you watch the prequels as I assume you will. As you watch the next one and continue to see how powerful the force is, remember one thing: that there is something more powerful than the force that only by limiting the force or even laying it down altogether can someone hope to use. It's part of the meaning of the movies (George Lucas' movies at least) that most people miss.

You are AWESOME! Watching your videos on Star Wars is like watching all of modern Sci-Fi in reverse. Most of your sci-fi viewing thus far (SG1, TNG, Bab V, etc), were direct results of these first few movies. Those luckly enough to have lived through the rough years of sci-fi remember most of your questions and confusion as we had some of the same head scratches as you. Where we differ though in that we did not have the other shows that you grew with to temper our expectations. So when Yoda says," you must unlearn what you have learned", makes so much sense when you watch these films. You have to take in consideration that the things you know (in sci-fi media) and break it down to where a lot of it came from. That example of the Enterprise episode that you quoted, it was a retelling of another sci-fi movie called "Enemy Mine". Which is, of course, a sci-fi spin on other works from different mediums. Having said that though, don't change how you approach the rest of the series, I find your take most refreshing and unique. May the Force be with you, always.

I mean the real answer is when Lucas was making the first movie he hadn't thought of all that yet, lol, the man made it up as he went. My head canon is that the Emperor believes in the Force and is 100% in on the Dark side, just like Vader, but only Vader knows. The Emperor keeps this secret from the general public and doesn't talk about the Force within his role as a political leader.
@HGMyers-yt2fr
@HGMyers-yt2fr Жыл бұрын
Part of the reason why you seem so surprised that the Emperor believes in the Force, while Grand Moff Tarkin and Admiral Conan Motti (the man Vader choked after he snarked that the Force hadn't helped Vader find the Death Star plans) are dismissive of it is that when George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars, he had thought the Emperor would just be a figurehead, and Tarkin and a cabal of generals and admirals like him, would be the actual leaders of the Empire. By the time he wrote "Empire Strikes Back," he had decided to make the Emperor the actual big bad of the series - and so there was that slight inconsistency between the films. It's explained away in-universe, however, as the fact that the Emperor - like Vader - follows and uses the Force being a closely guarded secret of the highest ranks of the Empire. It is absolutely not common knowledge even to the hierarchy of the Empire. But as others have said, most of your questions about the Force and the Empire are answered in the Prequel Films (episodes I, II, and III) that came out from 1999 to 2005.

@@jimamos7984 Agreed, but sadly it's far more complicated than that. Right now we have both good and bad people working on Star Wars. I was hoping for a complete retcon, but after season 3 of Mando, which isn't bad imo, it just shows me that they're beginning to connect dots with the aimless sequel trilogy. I'm just not sure what to expect now.

The number of people in the galaxy who are Force-sensitive is VERY small, in comparison with the hundreds of thousands of inhabited planets and star systems. Those have a strong enough connection to the Force to do stuff like move objects and manifest super powers is very small in comparison to that, and THEN most of those people were hunted down by Vader. So most people have only ever heard crazy stories about Jedi and the Force, which is why so many people in the first movie scoffed at those ideas. Also, the general public has never seen the Emperor, and have no idea that he is who he is.

The original line as known to Mark Hamill and David Prowse on set was "Obi-Wan killed your father." Everyone BUT James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader) found out the truth at the theater. James Earl Jones's reaction to reading the line was, "Oh, he's lying!" You noticed Luke's aunt and uncle acting weird about Luke's father. Go back and watch Obi-Wan when Luke asks how his father died.

That is incorrect. Mark was taken aside just before the scene was filmed and told the truth so that he could play the reaction correctly and as strongly as he did. He has said so in interviews several times.

the force blankets most areas of the galaxy, powerful practicioners can sense things happening a LONG way away; there are also things you can do to hide, like yoda did; yoda hid on dagobah because a significant dark force event happened there (death of a darkside user iirc) and it was covered in a massive living jungle; and he hid hiimself near its impression in the force

OK. I'm putting a perspective change on offer for you. Star Wars is NOT science fiction. It is fantasy. There are obviously sci fi elements in the setting, but the point of Star Wars is character, narrative, theme. Traditional sci fi, which this is from the era of, takes a technological concept, expands it to it's logical conclusion or reductio ad absurdem, and then crafts a story to analyze the impact of that change on society. This is completely, completely beside the point in Star Wars. Think of this as fantasy and a hero's journey and you'll have a much easier time enjoying these films. Just my 0.02.

Luke's fall - he could've used the Force to guide his fall into the exhaust shaft. You can see the shaft curve, which then would allow him to slow down, also with the Force.

"I sometimes obsess over small things unnecessarily"🤣😆😖 -Classic!.👍🤣 Imagine waiting years between movies when episode 4 (the first) had no indication that there would ever be another. It was made as a complete movie that was never expected to break all movie records at all. George Lucas is a legend and changed the world. He also had the genius to secure the merchandise rights that no one even wanted beforehand. He also remained an independent film maker who made enough to do it himself and pioneer the tech to change the entire movie-making game forever!.Total living Legend!. Zebedee from Oz. 👍

22:10, when you see all of the films you will learn just how involved the droids are in the overall saga. That said this little interaction between R2D2 and Yoda will be even more hilarious. R2 and Yoda totally gaslit Luke.

Nah it was just Yoda doing the gaslighting to shit-test the young Padawan. R2 was just as miffed at his "crazy old man" act and might have even been fooled into thinking that he really wasnt Yoda, just one of Yodas species, and a really annoying one at that 😂

Like I mentioned in the last film, Stormtroopers are a conscripted military force and as far as the rank and file, considered expendable. Therefore not a whole lot of effort and expense is put into there training, their only true strength lies in their shear numbers. 41:00 Vader doesn't know that Yoda is still alive, so he's assuming it was Obi-wan's training. 46:20 All the fall control is variations on the 'Force push' ability, a kind of telekinesis, like Vader was using earlier to throw things at Luke. Catching the antenna below the cloud city was by Jedi reflexes.

"Why doesn't everyone know about the force?" So here's the best way I can sum this up: the Force is space magic. Only certain people are able to tap into it, and those people must be born with that ability, and then hone their ability to use it. However, the Force has some level of its own will, and can help guide the lives of even non-force-sensitives so long as they believe in it (kinda like the Christian belief system). Now, currently the only Force users we have seen by this point are Luke, Obi Wan, and Darth Vader, and the Emperor as well but I don't remember if we've seen him yet. That is only four people. Four people in not just a nation, not just a planet, not just a solar system, but an entire GALAXY. These are the only KNOWN Force users in the entire galaxy at this time. There used to be a lot more, but they were still comparatively rare, and since so many were on the side of helping others, the Emperor, a clever schemer, had all the ones his empire could find wiped out until Force users were nothing more than a rumor. The incidents in episodes 4, 5, and 6 take place twenty years after that wipeout happens, which is why most folks Luke's age don't believe the force even exists: because even when it was more common, they were still unlikely to see someone that could actually use it. As for those that know the Emperor and Vader...they know the force exists, clearly, but few get to see them in action and live to tell the tale.
