I sort of like some of the old school shots of the Enterprise in space.

Because it is actually "real" vs CGI. That is, it is a real model that was used. I prefer it to the CGI myself.

I remember watching this for the first time..way back in 1969!! Am i right in thinking that when the creature is about to kill Kirk..Bones hesitated....and some versions miss his.."God forgive me"..or something like that??? These are all..."fascinating!". my friend thank for all your hard work and dedication to them.. Best wishes Bob in uk

The CGI is rendered beautifully but it makes us sad that they've cut out all of the hands-on modeling and crafting...which should be a warning considering the cage.

“Man Trap” was my first introduction to the OS. I was like 12 and was scared of the monster for like 4 days after watching. I was hooked though. Binged episode after episode that first month or so. Never looked back!

I first watched this when my mum got the first season on dvd for us. The idea of a shape shifting alien that sucked out all the body’s salt (and also looked hideous) was horrifying. The night we watched the episode I didn’t want my mum too close when she tucked me in.

Major MISTAKE at 4:21. The matte painting has none of the bushes in front of the dwelling, even though Kirk actually picks up some of it (making rather obvious)

Th end of the episode is pretty weird. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy smirk at each other while thinking about the extinction of the buffalo and how they just killed off the last of another species. Real nice.

It's bemusement, not amusement at the irony. Smiles mean many things and the subtext is pretty obvious there.

the OG Enterprise had machines to make synthesized food. Humans need salt, obviously the same salt the creature needed (otherwise she would have starved long before the Enterprise arrived). Hence the synthesizers could have made the same salt for her... ever since I saw this in the 70's, as a kid, I realized this and pondered, "So if they could just make the salt, why kill her? And why didn't top-science-officer Spock think of it?"

tbh I like the camera trickery or whatever they did to make it look like there was an actual spaceship flying through space better than the CGI. The CGI has much higher fidelity, sure, but the original looks more believable.

The original version used a practical model. Human brains can (usually) identify if a thing it sees is real or not. The practical models had their problems, but at least our brains knew we're looking at real objects, and not just a few colorful polygons on a computer screen

The only other difference I know of for original vs. syndication was at the end of the episode. Haven't seen the DVD, but I did notice they used the Eurostile font when they changed Gene Roddenberry's credit from "Produced by" to "Created and Produced by" in later prints. Same thing with "Charlie X" also.

Interesting, do you by any chance have a recording of these episodes? I have only the DVDs and Blurays to work with
@kresblain4 жыл бұрын
@@TrekkieChannel I wish I did; I do recall the other episode was 98% restored when CBS had it on their KZbin channel several years ago. It might be the exact same prints as the DVDs, now that I think about it.

“even thought”. 🤦♂️ Haha. OOPS! Great video though! This episode really shows all of the good reasons for changing the effects with new ones. Everything is improved, makes more sense, and just looks better. Of course, in other episodes, they dropped the ball, or made bizarre design choices, completely going against the mid-60s design aesthetic. I’m hoping for a second redo. Or these days, some better fan redo!

You didn't mention that where there was a "whoosh" of the ship zipping by in the opening sequence, the new version has silence. (because, space...)

No... no CGI. We don't need to "fix" things. "Just because we can do a thing it does not nessarily follow that we must, do that thing." (That's a test for you fans by the way, who first made that statement I just quoted? Hummm?)

Can you elaborate Why there was wrong model of enterprise?
@TrekkieChannel5 жыл бұрын
There were 3 versions of the Enterprise model. The first version was used in The Cage, the second one was used in Where No Man Has Gone Before, and the third one was used for the show itself. The stock footage uses the different version of the model - the main giveway are the antennae on the front of the Bussard collectors etc. If you don't know all of the differences, check for example this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmazdJpjYr5petE

Some of them - SOME of them - are downright cartoonish. It's known for example that the CBS-D team took more time and care with episodes which are fan favorites, while others just seemed merely done to meet a deadline. Doug Drexler could have - and had been prepared to do - much better, but the work was by his own account, taken out of his hands just to save on costs.

Great shot by shot comparison, but I'd still like to know why they didn't fix the scene where Crater gets hit by a phaser beam, because it is unintentionally funny: first, because you hear a PING! like a gunshot bouncing off of a rock, and second, Crater falls down like someone pulled a chair out from underneath him. Was that sequence deemed unfixable, or did they just not have the time or money to make it realistic?
@TrekkieChannel4 жыл бұрын
I assume that would be a too big of a change, requiring even re-timing the actor's performance (editing out a bunch of frames as a minimum)
@snate564 жыл бұрын
@@TrekkieChannel Well, they certainly could've edited out the ricochet.
@domainofthesun44004 жыл бұрын
IMO the way Crater fell was perfect - he didn't swoon artistically, he just dropped in place as if he'd instantly lost control of his body. (It reminds me of the way I fell when I had temporary paroxysmal vertigo years ago. I'd just drop where I stood, hitting anything in the way on the way down - like the rug had been whipped out from under me.)

The monster was diffrent too or am i wrong?
