@Kiyosuki8 жыл бұрын
This thing is perfect, it's just never been topped imo. The pearlescent reflection off the hull's aztec pattern is so unique, but even in later movies where it had a more uniformed bluish light grey/white scheme it was still beautiful. The overall uniformed color scheme, primarily whites, grays, and blues due to the lack of nacelle pylons in favor of those iconic black cross "grills" in the front", with really only the impulse engines emitting a red hue regularly still makes it really stand out with its more subdued take on color. The surfaces are smooth and simple but at the same time, complex in a subtle way due to both the aztec pattern, tiny details and decals, and the use of bold triangular angles and shapes to get that often vaunted art-deco look has made it practically age-proof. It has spectacular use of spotlights on its own hull not just to highlight registry, but even for decorative purposes and it's a really unique trait that few if any other starships have in how it lights up the hull in a sensible way. Most of all, this ship has NO bad angle. The big D has a lot of beauty shots below it, but its top views were always a little awkward. The Excelsior and Sovereign are really cool and beautiful in how efficient and "practical" they look, but their length kind of makes certain side views less interesting to look at than others. The JJ 1701 has a nice side view and saucer but those nacelles made for some really awkward looking angles, and the new (as of beyond) 1701-A looks beautiful overall but it's flipped the situation by having really pretty angles overall, but a horrendous side view due to those struts reaching all the way back. Even imo, the original Enterprise, as iconic as it is, looks cool from some views...but others like its side or back view just look kind of boring and dated to me now. The TMP era Connie though has no bad angle whatsoever. you can film it under, over, to the side, fish-eye lens over the high back, super close up front, above the saucer, below the saucer (especially here). It just looks gorgeous and symmetrical from every single angle possible, and that's no small feat. Forget Star Trek, the TMP era Enterprise I think is one of the most aesthetically beautiful ship designs in science fiction history in general imo. One might be able to nitpick things like the overall shape of the Enterprise, which is more of a common non-fan complaint (thin neck, vulnerable struts etc. You know the usual), but it's hard to deny that at least visually the ship has no weak angle to film.

I believe the torpedoes are fueled immediately prior to being loaded and fired and the fuel comes from the same source as the warp core. So the explosive potential is exactly the same but placing them close to one another reduces complexity and potentially could preserve a part of the ship if the area went up in antimatter flames.

Hey guys, great episode. One thing I'll mention is the 'green paint'. At about 23:15 you mention the interior of the shuttle/cargo bay is green... don't know if it's relevant, but the particular shade of green is similar to the primer used by the RAF and USAF. It is also a 'calm' colour, in terms of chromatic-emotional responses.

It was my understanding from the Mr. Scott Guide to USS Enterprise that the Intermix chamber is on the deck where the shafts split into horizontal to warp nacelles and vertical to impulse drive. The matter and antimatter storage is best kept near the outer hull to facilitate ejecting the antimatter into space to prevent an explosion inside the starship.

The image shown at 17:55 shows a tube running down the connecting dorsal just forward of the warp core. That's the turbo-lift tube which allows travel of the turbo-lift. Once it gets to engineering (which means that the door to engineering "should" lead to a turbo-lift, not an intersection of corridors), it splits port and starboard around engineering then heads aft to the two vertical tubes seen in the cargo hangar area. Also, we see in ST:VI TUC, that engineering has changed to a more Galaxy-class looking layout. This, accompanied with the knowledge from ST:V that the cargo hangar is now considerably smaller, could lead one to conjecture that many of the original refit's design issues were addressed. It is entirely plausible to say that the warp core moved aft and was shortened and that they simply had a single plasma shaft heading up to the impulse engines.
@saijex9 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I've actually read it somewhere (I've read a ton of Trek stuff over the years) or if I'm making it up. But I think the torpedo launcher being close to the warp core might have something to do with the transferring of deuterium & anti-matter to the torpedoes to arm them. Also, having fuel storage close to an outer edge for ejection purposes. Those thoughts come to mind, but maybe they do just like to live on the edge, hahaha.

Wow, I finally have an answer for something that had always wondered me! At 23:50 (or so) there is a comparison of the sizes of Excelsior, Enterprise (A) and C. I had always thought the Excelsior was much bigger, because I was comparing the brigde domes. Then, when watching DS9 there were Excelsiors and Mirandas. And so I thought the Mirandas were much oversized in DS9 (I compared to my impression of the size of the Excelsior). But now I see how it is supposed to be. Thanks. :)
@ruckdog9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the problem is that the Excelsior's bridge dome is too small for the stated size of the ship (compared to other designs). So, either the Excelsior is much larger, or the bridge is only partly visible, like the tip of an iceberg.

Actually, the refit did have lifeboat hatches. On the top surface of the primary hull are two rows of squares. The outer row nearest the edge are the five personnel hatches, one of which was used for the V'Ger walk. The inner row of fifteen hatches are the lifeboat hatches. To quote Andrew Probert from an interview found in "Starlog Photo Guidebook: Special Effects, Vol. 5", when describing the design of the 1701-D, "I added a series of visible lifeboat covers (as opposed to graphic markings on the movie Enterprise) to the ship which alluded to the ship's capacity of 3,500." The graphic markings he is referring to are these hatches. He also stated on an older version of his website that the lifeboats were also included in the secondary hull but that he had forgotten to place markings on the exterior of the ship for these, "The side doors, with red stripe/white lettering, would lead to a section of lifeboat stations located along each side of the outer hull, (another omitted detail)."

Massive refits like this are not unknown in navy history. Some examples: British Battleship Warspite Italian Battleship Conte De Cavour Japanese Battlecruiser Kongo US Battleship West Virginia US Carrier Midway (many refits) US Carrier Essex class USS Ohio SSBN (mostly interior) Sometimes it's cheaper or more effective to do full refits instead of building an entire ship from scratch. Sometimes it is enforced due to treaty regulations forbidding new construction, but not renovation. Indeed many of the ships I've mentioned look ENTIRELY different but many of their functional parts are the same from pre-refit to post-refit. Cheers

In Naval refits, don't they get a new hull number? Or I mean when they rebuild a new ship, such as making a new Enterprise, doesn't the new version have an entirely different number? I always hated the -A, -B, -C, -D... they should have had new numbers in my opinion. Enterprise A should have been Enterprise 1776 perhaps. Maybe 1771 even.
@Riceball018 жыл бұрын
No, they keep the same hull number but the designation/prefix might change. Let's say that the Navy had an old heavy cruiser CA-71, it gets refitted into a guided missile cruiser, its new designation would then become CG-71 because it's a now a guided missile cruiser. What the Navy doesn't do is reuse hull numbers, ship names, yes, hull number, no. Hull numbers tend to be continuous and run consecutively throughout a ship class type, for example, US destroyers (DDs) start with DD-1 and run all the way up to DD-992 with no repeats in hull numbers, the same goes with every other ship type in the US Navy.

Why "green there?" in the shuttle-bay/workbee recharge section? I ret-con/rationalize take is that if you look at most aircraft, the interior metal in the airframe is because of its oxide green anti-corrosive coating. Zinc Chromate is used as an anti-corrosive barrier primer in most military and commercial aircraft. The 'native' tone of Zinc Chromate crystalline salt is a bright greenish-yellow. When put into binders to make paint, this color would be the raw result. My ST:TMP explanation is also that the Enterprise was not done with it's refit when it was pressed into service to deal with V'ger. If this had not occurred, that section might have ended up with a final interior wall paint covering over this primer. Just my 2/100ths of a farthing.

Again, a brilliant episode. Now, about the crossections, there is something that you will have to probably explain to me if I'm getting it wrong but: Couldn't it be, that it just doesn't matter if the warpcore is on the edge? What I mean is: Once the shields on a ship are down, in a larger battle, it is done for. We see that several times in the movies, where one torpode shoots straight through the saucer, or in ds9, where miranda class ships just get blown up instantly. So, you could argue that, once the shields are down, it doesn't make a difference if there is just the hullplating or 4 decks and the hullplating between the warp core and the weaponfire. They just shoot straight through it and destroy it anyways, no matter what. With that in mind, the positioning within the ship just isn't very important. If they know where the warp core is, they can shoot it and blow it up. That few additional decks you can get by placing it in the middle of the ship, would buy what, 1 second it takes the enemy to burn through that? No, there's no use in that. Personally, I like the idea of ships being able to take a punch even without their shields. There are also onscreen occasions where they do take some weapons fire without getting blown up even after the shields are down. I think that is, because starfleet has pretty good armor. But again, that armor is on the outside of the ship, on the hull itself. Then, maybe there's some additional internal shielding around that warp core. And that is enough protection. Having like 10 crew quarters between that armor and the core, doesn't really make a difference. I mean, after all, the interior of the enterprise, as shown on these pictures, is manly just air. Same reason for the torpedo tubes next to the warp core. As far as I know: If the torpedo magazine on a constitution really screws up that mad, that the explosion is internally, then you're dead. It's as simple as that. You can either contain the internal explosion in the room by energy fields itself, so it never comes near the warpcore next door, or it gets out of control. in that case it would blow up the whole torpedomagazine and the ship is dead anyway. No matter if the warp core blows up 1.2 seconds sooner or later. After all it is, like what you said: Our ape brain. Our Ape Brain tells us, that if there is more physical space between the warp core and the hull, it is safer. That is our instinct. But if you really think about it, you realize, that the interior of the ship is nothing that would make any difference in that case. If Khan would have known where exactly the warp core of the enterprise is, he could've blown up the ship immidiatly anyway. Cargobays would not hold off the mirandas superphaser. Those are just a few containers filled with...I don't know what they take with them, bananas and stonebricks, something that the replicator can't handle.

Phasers; You missed that UNDER the aft hull, on centerline, there are two phasers with a 360* arc around (fore/aft) arc, while have a half-sphere arc under the keel. This keeps the ship from the issues of blind spots in the 3-d of space. Play more SFB, and less FASA, you'll get it then ! Photon torps use Warp-Core energy, that's why the Torp bay is at a juncture of the upper/lower hulls, although, it was 'good' in the upper saucer, here, re-loads happen faster, and the disc helps keep above/forward attacks from blowing the bridge+torps at the same time. You'd seperate while going to Emergency/Auxillary bridges if needed, and the torps could fire regardless of whether your warp-bubble was intact, they just need Juice! The fact that the Constitutions could live on as two separate 'lifeboats' after one hull got 'punched thru' made them tough ships to completely destroy. The Enterprise 'D' brought that idea into a new tactical move during the Farpoint Encounter. Better to be on a Fed than a D-7, if you're 'bridge crew'!

The reason to have the Anti-matter storage next to the edge of the ship, is that if you start to lose anti-matter containment, you can eject the storage tank overboard. They did this in some Voyager episodes...
@CommandLineVulpine8 жыл бұрын
I notice a couple times you guys complaining about the matter/antimatter fuel being stored together. There's no reason that's any more dangerous than any other way to store them. If antimatter loses containment it's going to touch the side of it's storage container and blow up anyway. Unless it's stored in an alternate dimension or something, if containment is lost is going to explode no matter what.

Precisely. The only stipulation is that antimatter bottles are stored in such a position that allows them to be ejected if containment starts failing.

@alaskanchristian48817 жыл бұрын
it is a VERY clever design to have the warp core right there. Torpedos have to me armed, AKA Fueled, you need the matter/Antimatter storage pods near by. You also want as FEW weak points as possible. If you have extra pods for the weapon storage in one area and then the reactor in another instead of together with extra armor and shielding, you create two weak points.
@eXcommunicate19798 жыл бұрын
I feel like the deuterium tanks should be up in the saucer near the impulse engines. The impulse engines use the deuterium in their fusion reactors anyway and the saucer would need the fuel if it separated. The antimatter can be in the bottle at the bottom of the vertical shaft as @16:45 shows. Anyway, just my thinking on that.

Love the show. As I understand it, the intermix shaft is close to the torpedo launcher because the torpedoes are armed with a small bit of antimatter which is siphoned off from the intermix shaft. Also the antimatter magnetic bottles are near the exterior on the underbelly so that they can be jettisoned in case of emergency. I love the point you make about the turboshft and intermix shaft getting into the saucer...seems a bit unrealistic/convoluted. I think there's a saucer deck right under the impulse engine where the turboshaft enters and then splits off port and starboard.

I like the location of the MARA storage area. It makes sense because if you have such dangerous reactive substances, you don't want them buried in the bowels of the ship, you want them to be easily jettisoned and where they have the safest escape route. Same with the warp core. Jettison the MARA storage and warp core and await rescue.

The 3 different colour lights in the ceiling of the corridors could be like what they do in hospitals and other facilities where these are to show you the way to different sections. With a ship that size an with so many rooms it's easy to get lost. With the enterprise I guess they didn't want to draw lines on the carpet. Follow the yellow light to engineering, blue light to sickbay etc

I like the fear of storing the matter and anti matter together lol. Anti matter is antimatter and it does not matter whatsoever what matter it comes into contact with! Literally anywhere on the ship is just as dangerous. But it does make some sense to store the antimatter where it is, first if it were to contact matter and detonate it's as far as practical from the rest of the ship potentially sparing some of it and second you may be able to eject the antimatter containment module and you obviously want it near the hull for that.

Sorry to be late to the party... I often hear it pointed out that the torpedo launchers being close to the warp core is awkward placement but I think it makes sense. The torpedoes are not stored with antimatter in them, as that would be very dangerous. Each torpedo could potentially destroy the ship should its own containment field fail. Therefore a torpedo is injected with antimatter only right before being launched (presumably when it's in the tube). As such keeping the injecting device close to where antimatter is transferred from the bottles to the warp core makes sense, so you'd have to have only one set of plumbing taking antimatter from the bottles to the warp core and the torpedo injectors. Just my two cents. If torpedoes could be stored with antimatter in them, then it would make more sense to fire them as missiles from a bank of missiles, so they could all be fired at once if needed (think Macross Missile Massacre).
@sirbobbyuk9 жыл бұрын
Got me thinking about what you were saying having the anti matter core stretching all the way from the primary hull to the secondary hull, it's taken me all this time to relative that you could have house primary in the star drive section impulse drive wouldn't have to rely on the warp energy. Thereby you could have the turbo lift safely navigate between the two parts. It's possible that in later designs the conie v2 mark 8 could a smaller intermix chamber with greater power and more secure from enemy attack

My first reaction is that this was a terrific episode of Trekyards. My second reaction is that I found the matter storage location to be quite odd. This design was probably set when the thinking about how the warp reactor might work was still at an early state. It seems to me that by the time TNG came along the treknology folks had settled in the following: The tubes that attach to the top and the bottom of the reactor chamber are linear accelerators. The top one feeds matter down, (probably hydrogen ions) and the bottom one feeds antimatter up. The dilithium crystals channel the matter and the antimatter so they always meet and generate the energy that charges the warp plasma. Obviously, if even a few atoms of antimatter missed their targets, they'd hit the reactor chamber, with very bad results. The antimatter would be stored at the bottom for a number of reasons. First, minimal handling of a very dangerous substance. Second, it's right where it needs to be, for injection into the warp core. Third, easy to jettison. I would go so far as to suggest that any time the warp core is ejected, the antimatter storage probably goes with it. Storing the (hydrogen) matter at the top puts it close to the matter injector, but also places it close to the fusion reactors that power the impulse engines.
@eXcommunicate19798 жыл бұрын
I agree. The antimatter is stored at the bottom and the matter --deuterium-- is stored up in the saucer near the impulse drive. Though, I think in this refit, the drive plasma for the impulse engines was also supplied by the warp core. Not a good design, IMHO, and probably why the -A had a much different core design, in-universe explanation.

This will always be my favorite Star Trek ship. I think the proportions and style of it are beautiful and it looks elegant and powerful from any angle. It always bugged me that they never showed up in TNG. I have read the reason for this was to avoid confusing the audience into thinking it was Kirk and company there. Seems like a silly reason to me, so I’ve always imagined they’re still around in the TNG era, just not where the D is.

I'd like to make one comment regarding energy containment systems - given that the system is using field technologies we know not of, it is safe to assume that by this stage containment of energy is probably manageable by this time. Its not possible for us now, but already we are far more advanced in 2017 than we were in 1967. And so on. Regarding topedo tubes - you gentlemen will both be aware that the torpedo tubes are to the sides of the core, so that eliminates that problem. And then, of course, the torpedoes themselves are not excessively bulky, so that helps too.

I don't think it is. I recall that scene as showing only one of the nacelles through the windows. And it looked very awkward.
@nightwingnum12267 жыл бұрын
The original 79 has no nacels .
@SumDumGy7 жыл бұрын
I know it doesn't. The director's cut does, as you said. I just think you're recalling it wrong. I recall that cut showing only one nacelle, not two.

Notes on the placement of the anti-matter storage/warp core by the arboretum/at bottom of the ship. First, no matter where you put it, there's enough antimatter that the entire ship would be vaporized if containment were lost. Second, my understanding of the rationale behind putting it at the bottom was to make it easily jettisoned if containment were lost. Last note: The refit Constitution is by far the most aesthetically pleasing design in Star Trek and, in my opinion, the best looking fictional ship ever.

I think putting the bussards at the front of the secondary hull makes a lot more sense than putting them on the nacelles, since the deuterium storage bottles are at the front of the secondary hull.
@wierdalien18 жыл бұрын
eXcommunicate1979 it could be that being on the nacelles is necessary because of the interaction between warp field and magnetic fields
@eXcommunicate19798 жыл бұрын
Good thinking, although now you have to pipe the deuterium all the way through the secondary hull to the bottles. It's just one of those things I think they just thought it looked cool and didn't think about the practicalities.

The Refit moved the Nacelle Struts forward creating more Shuttle Bay room then the original versions.

Andrew, buy a clue , the three nodes on the front near the nav deflector are NOT Bussard collectors , but space attraction devices , Bussard collectors are on the front of the warp nacelles as with all star trek ships

I actually like this phaser aesthetic. I also like the JJprise phasers too. I think pulse phasers, point defense phasers, and beam phasers could exist at the same time, in the same ship, and used to achieve different things.

Speculation on location of photon launchers : As they feature anti-matter warheads, it is advantageous to be able to load them through the same mechanism that feeds the warp core, rather than having to route a second anti-matter path.
@richardkohlhof2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all a great pics of the ship and the different variations I have watched each of your special shows on the Constitution class- now think about Antimatter, They use deuterium or anti uterium and uterium and deuterium so your anti matter is in magnetic Storage tanks if you lose magnetic cohesion cohesion or if you're going to and you know it you can eject all of the antimator pods which I believe they've done In at least one TOS episode. It doesn't matter where those tanks are if you lose magnetic cohesion medic cohesion if it comes in contact with any regular matter no matter what the inside of the tank boom you're dead. Same with the torpedo launchers they have to be charged right before launch with a dose of Antimatter so you're gonna want that available and that's gonna be most available near the reaction chamber or your fuel pods. Just thinking out loud what do you say

You know I can probably come up with a in Cannon explanation for the turbo lift shaft in Star Trek 5. I like to think that the individual responsible for painting the deck level numbers in the shaft was drunk, and just painted whatever numbers he wanted to. And nobody bothered to change it because it really didn't matter. I mean that would be kind of a interesting explanation for that.

Love your show! Just discovered it 2 days ago and have watched a few episodes so far. Have you seen the cutaway poster of the refit released when ST-TMP was released? I do not recall the name of the artist but cutaways were his specialty. It had a lot of interesting details. The 3 objects around the deflector dish were sensors. The grills on either side of the nacelles towards the front were "space matter" something, so I think that meant Bussard collectors by another name. The blue light on top of each nacelle did contain a crystal as part of the warp drive.

just watching this and you seems to be confused as to where the antimatter and matter streams combine - that happens in the dilithium crystal chamber where the warp plasma conduits then take the plasma to the nacelles - so its not right next to the antimatter storage - the top and bottom sections of teh warp core are essentially linear accellerators - also the reason for keeping the antimatter next to the hull is so you can eject it in a hurry in the event of a containment failure - from a tactical point of view i would assume that area is HEAVILY armoured and shielded
@teknomancer60249 жыл бұрын
having watched, there are a couple of points regarding the turbo lifts. one of which is that the angled shot in this episode is actually not showing that you can dock directly to the tufbo lift shaft, but that the docking port is just forward of the shaft as seen, and the shaft runs BEHIND the docking port. remember the scene when that docking port is used? cant remember if it is in tmp or twok, but that is the place where they dock, and the port has NO indication of a turbo lift, sorry, guys... This refit would be huge. Would they have stripped the Enterprise down to it's frame and add a new saucer, Engineering, nacelles and deflector or simply removed the nacelles added new ones, replace the deflector and saucer? Seems like a complete rebuild/ almost a new designed ship versus dimpling updated systems and weapons.

Another difference in the bridges of the A from V to VI was that in V the controls were a little more touch console than the buttons it changed to in VI

Constitution class starships had turbo lift cars as life boats, the turbo lift cars would exit the ship, then expand to make the interior volume bigger. I am not sure where the standard lifeboats were stored.

I never really understood how this was supposed to be a refit. There's pretty much nothing of the original ship left. For me it was always a completely new ship built in a similar style.

@willcaputo18 жыл бұрын
You bring up the difference between the bridges between 2 and 6, despite the same crew. I have an answer for that. Remember that in 2, the ship is supposed to be a training vessel. It doesn't really need much more than basic controls. By the time 6 rolls around, the A is in fleet service, likely serving as a Command Cruiser. A role where you would benefit from having more stations on the bridge, what with data links, comm lines, etc between a group of ships.

You say the 1st Enterprise A Bridge was damaged in the rain. But on Memory Alpha they say it was changed into the Battle Bridge of the Enterprise D. Then it was used for the Stargazer bridge and many others
@Trekyardswebseries9 жыл бұрын
Yes… The main structure of the bridge was reused but all the fine details and consoles were damaged because of water.

I always wandered exactly where the Recreation Deck that was show in the motion picture was located. It's where the crew gathered to get the V'ger briefing. Anyone know?
@ruckdog9 жыл бұрын
It's supposed to be on the saucer rim, at about the 5 o'clock position. If you look on the model, you can see where the windows were enlarged to represent it. However, the set as shown in the movie would not have fit that location due to the undercut of the saucer. It should have had a "stadium" style terraced look to work, but there wasn't enough money in the films budget to build the set that way.

One to research. I've wondered why the rearward facing windows in the saucer section rim are different on the left side compared to the right. (I've never looked up a schematic to find out) :)

Daniel Collins The larger windows on the starboard side were to try and accommodate the huge Rec area in the motion picture.

I do not know if you go back and look at comments this far back but I have always liked the phaser fire in ST:WOK rather than the TNG solid phaser fire. I remember watching the TOS episodes and how the Enterprise fired her phasers in solid beams but I thought it was part of the refit process that phasers had evolved into a rapid fire mode. Has anyone ever edited the WOK to give it the TNG phaser fire?
