Tren Maya Episode 19 - Campeche Cost of Living

Come along with us to explore the beautiful walled city of Campeche. We start out our adventure touring the wall itself and visiting all of the bastions we can - some of which have museums inside. One of which is one of the best archaeological museums we have ever visited (Museo de Arquitectura Maya).
The following day we check out their two hilltop forts (Fort San Miguel & Fort San Jose El Alto). Then later we catch their impressive fountain show after watching a beautiful sunset.

Hola Georgia and David. Campeche looks great in your video. Very colorful and inviting. I'm a little bit envious. 50 years ago I arrived early in the afternoon and it rained until after dark. The next morning it was raining again and continued to do so until after I gave up and left. I did some soggy sightseeing but didn't take a single photo, so your video shows me some of what I missed. Of course now the museums are more developed. 50 years ago most of the sites you visited in the state of Campeche had not been excavated and restored. Too bad San Jose was closed for restoration. Tiled churches are rare in the Yucatan Peninsula, and San Jose has the added oddity of having a lighthouse atop one of its towers. Odd that San Jose and the cathedral were also undergoing restoration at the same time, I guess the government is trying to catch up on deferred maintenance before the Maya Train begins to bring zillions of tourists to the city. At least San Francisquito was open. It has what are probably the best gilded retablos in Campeche, so thank you for showing those. Did you see the adjacent cloister? It;s ironic that you have such good luck seeing the Mayan ruins by yourselves but have such bad luck finding an open church. I read that the new Edzna archaeology museum opened this past week. The washing machine in your rented house reminds me of the one my mother had to use prior to 1951. It had a hand-cranked wringer atop the washer, and wet clothes were removed from the machine and run through the rollers before hanging the clothes up to dry. Well, at least you didn't have to wash your clothes by beating them on a rock in a river the way I did in Sayulita. This week Mexico announced the addition of 12 additional barrios magicos, bringing the total number of pueblos magicos and barrios magicos to 209. I think it is a plot by the restaurant owners association to keep you in Mexico and eating very well. How is your weather? Rainy? A heavy rain in Merida last week left some streets knee deep from the runoff. I experienced some of that 50 years ago. Fortunately the water seems to disappear relatively quickly. Hopefully the hurricanes aimed at Colima to Guerrero won't affect Mazatlan too much. I suppose your next video is Villahermosa. There are several ruins in the area but the best are in the park for the La Venta sculptures and at Comalcalco. I think there are now three pueblos magicos in the area. 50 years ago none of the towns seemed to be magical, although many had a seedy charm wrapped in tropical decay. I did encounter two Lacandon Indians wandering around Villahermosa late one night. They are easy to spot when wearing their traditional traje indigena. In 1974 at least eight rivers in the area were crossed by ferries, including a large ferry to reach Frontera. I hope that after leaving Villahermosa you had a chance to visit Lago Catemaco and the nearby Salto de Eyipantla. I know you love waterfalls. Also Tlacotalpan, which I think might be a World Heritage Site. How much longer do you have in Mazatlan? Stay safe. And dry. And cool. Well, one of the three anyway.

If Campeche wasn't so hot and humid it would be a contender for us for long term living. The streets were beautiful and cleaner than most in Mexico. The food was excellent and we love a sunset over the water. The Mexican government is definitely catching up on all their deferred maintenance with the train on its way. We never had a washer like that one before but I do feel like it cleaned the clothes better than those new high efficiency ones. One day in the future we might have to plan a barrios magicos tour lol. The past three days have been beautiful and sunny with a bit of rain overnight. Unfortunately we didn't make it to any of those sites. Next week we take the ferry over to Baja.

$45 dollar breakfast and sweating balls like hell and the couple of places to see are closed, no thanks! I'll stay in Southern California!

Airbnb prices have increased a lot since we started traveling and we eat out almost everyday.... sometimes twice a day if we are traveling fast. Our expenses are definitely on the higher end especially compared to someone renting long-term.
