Tren Maya Updates and how this trip took a turn for the worse

Thanks for the variety of of videos updates on Tren Maya and the neighboring towns. There was an article in the Washington Post on March 02, 2024 in which the WP journalist wrote about his experience on the Tren Maya this past February. After reading his story, I decided to cancel my trip last week to the Yucatan Peninsula Cancun where I had hoped to ride the train to several of the neighboring cities and towns. Here is an excerpt from the journalist. "If I were returning to the Yucatán Peninsula, I’d avoid incorporating the train into my plans for now. The booking system is too unreliable and support is too sparse for it to be a predictable or pleasant part of a vacation. I also have a nagging feeling that my uneventful, mostly on-time journey was something of an outlier. But if I were to return sometime after the dust settles over the next few months - and I hope to - I’d gladly hop on another ride. When the booking system bugs and construction chaos are worked out, the Tren Maya feels destined to become a must-do for any traveler, foreign and domestic alike, eager to explore beyond the resorts of Cancún."

Thank you for your comment. We feel the same as the reporter. We really would like to see everything functioning well with the Tren Maya. At the same time, it is important to show how it is now and some of the flaws with the system that no one else is talking about for the most part.

Thank you for your informative videos. Tren Maya appears to be a work-in-progress, hence the lack of travel details online, as schedules and connections are changing. Hopefully, when work is complete some of the current weaknesses will be fixed. Although the out-of-town stations will remain a problem. Do you know when they will open the whole line? The circular route will be great for tourists.

The Tren Maya is slowly moving forward. The recent heavy rain has slowed some of the construction. Electric cables are still being hung so the electric trains can run. There still is only two trains a day going between Cancun and Merida and 3 daily trains from the airport to Playa in each direction daily. August is the new date for the train route to be opened. It was supposed to be February but that is where we are now.

@@EverythingPlayaDelCarmencom Thanks for the update. I will keep an eye on developments. I want to get away from the UK winter and enjoy rail holidays. So, this could be a great trip for me to do in December or January.

Thank you for this informative video . I went to Cancun airport to buy tickets but from there a taxi charged me $1,500 pesos to the train station to buy tickets. I bought the tickets but they supposed to send it in my email so far I only got one ticket., I bought two. I’m supposed to take the train Maya this coming Monday. I do not know what really is going to happen. I

We have heard of this happening with tickets before. Just keep a copy of the email or receipt that you got. It will be figured out in the station. We hope you have a good trip on the train.

There was a slow speed derailment when the train was switching track. Fortunately it was slow speed and no injuries. As you saw in our video here, there are times the train stops working and depending on if there is another train available, how it goes after that. @@adamd023

Unfortunately I don’t use taxis anymore because of how inconsistent they are with prices, Uber I think is sporadic and sometimes not available in areas if even allowed. I hate to use Uber and Airbnb because they’re community vultures but the taxi syndicates are not doing themselves any favors. If you get a taxi from a hotel they are obligated to a price list. I knew of a taxi driver who charged too much to a guest and was suspended after being reported by the guest. I hate that you had a bad experience Margarita.

Just trying to do a same day round trip is it realiable fot that?

It should be fine, we just had one of those bad days from the Tren Maya. It has happened about 8 times in the last 3.5 months. So not too frequently.
