Again I understand the Ukrainians quick trigger finger, as in trench warfare you have to be quick or be killed. War just sucks man and I'm sure that Ukrainian will live with this horrifying image every night. Dont get me wrong I would have been just ss quick, as in the heat of battle you cannot afford think on this. But this isn't a game gentlemen, this is real life, where you pull the trigger and you, yes you, are ending the life of someone else. Every time you take a life a piece of you dies with your target. Can always tell the ones who've never seen combat, they all talk so big and "cheer" this kinda of shit, but in the end it just fucks you up. My prayers to all the soldiers out there, on both sides. Killing a POW is a warcrime, he was not a POW nor even expressed interest in surrendering. He said "Svoi Blyat!" ("Yours, fuck!") which means he had no idea that he was even being shot at by a Ukrainian soldier in the first place. There was no way for the Ukrainian to know for sure if the Russian would fight back or pull a grenade (which Russian soldiers often do) so they shot him. Keep in mind according to the Geneva Conventions it is only a war crime to shoot a surrendering or hors-de-combat soldier if it is practical to capture them in the first place (no surrendering to drones or artillery shells.) The soldiers were in active combat and couldn't take him alive without risking their lives. It is also worth mentioning 99% of POWs are taken when they retroactively surrender or a large group of soldiers surrender at one time. There is rarely any historical precedent in this war or others for singular soldiers surrendering mid combat.

If both parties were ready, it would be extremely clear by someone taking charge and talking to him directly, giving him orders to surrender properly. This is not the case and when they said "surrender" they meant it to scare the invaders, not actually command them to surrender. He would also have to communicate with them, something which is easy since the UKR guys in the clip speak Russian with a few Ukrainian words in between, which could be a dialect of Surzhik. I do not think the russian soldier was in any position to surrender and the Ukrainians didn't give him the chance to. I couldn't hear the Russian try to reach out or raise his hands up.

It is impossible to take prisoners in such conditions, only possible when the guy is already walking out with his hands up AND you have atleast one person to look out after them, and if he has an open wound, then it becomes practically impossible unless you get your combat medics to patch up the surrendered soldier, putting risk on the soldiers assaulting, which may not get their help in time

Such great coordination. All that is missing is a drone operator having a direct link to a radioman on the ground that can forward direct intel on enemy positions and movement as where they had that machinegunner on the left, if that drone operator had a radioman on the ground who relays directly back enemy position to the fire team leader.

It's brutal, but not at all a war crime. He's in an active firefight and being disoriented doesn't make him a non-combatant. He's in an event where he's actively participating in the war. He may not have fired his gun at all, didn't know what was happening, and died a horrible and uneventful death, but he's in uniform and he at the battle. In any other scenario where he was surrendering outside of an active firefight and was shot, that would warrant a war crime.

The 'fencing response' refers to a reflexive body movement that occurs when a person is shot, especially when the injury is severe or fatal. The victim involuntarily jolts their hands up, and since the video was blurry, it looked like he was surrendering. This post-mortem reaction is seen in some people who have been shot in areas that affect motor control, such as the brain or spinal cord, and you can see blood leaking from his head. In short, that Russian soldier either died or was in a coma from the first shot. RIP, and I hope his family is well.
