I have medium colour wooden cabinets for the last 10 years and I still love it. The back splash is light beige marble design and off white walls with black granite countertops in a parallel kitchen with a separate sink area. White cabinets are too cold for me and I am scared of committing to colour as I think I might get over it in a year or two. My in laws moved from white cabinets to grey and I can see how the kitchen looks so dark and dim while my parents moved from light grey to light wood which feels light and airy

I’m from the same generation and 100% agree with you. I cringe when I see the avocado and harvest gold we adored back in the day. It seems to me that the creams and light beiges are really just white after a good night’s sleep. I think they can be mixed together really creatively.

I agree, I remember the avocado green and mustard colours in the 70s, they soon became too much. From years of experience the fixed items in kitchens, bathrooms and laundrys are very expensive to replace. Economically it's best to keep them basic and bring colours in in the paintwork, throws, towels, cushions, curtains, artwork etc.

We built in 2016. I used to work at Sherwin Williams for about 3 years and had my own faux finish/interior painting business for about 12 years. My motto for my own home is NO WHITE WALLS and NO WHITE CABINETS LOL!!! I love color. My own color choices are watery blue greens. We have an open concept house so the living, kitchen and dining are all one big room. We have maple cabinets with a coordinating quartz countertop and SW Meander Blue walls. We are in our 70's and pretty traditional. I had to kind of chuckle when you mentioned not relying on the name. We have a guest room and bathroom painted SW Cachet Cream. You would think that's an off white. But It's a buttery yellow color. I'm kind of surprised that the sages have hung on so long. You wouldn't believe how many gallons of SW Clary Sage I mixed while working at the store from 2002-2005 and used in my own business. Accessible Beige and many of the Greige colors were popular even back then. I have my own paint chip fan deck and choose my colors from that.

I just painted the kitchen. I believe in paint colors that make people look attractive. So I went to the paint store, turned my arm over, and selected paint that matched the color of the pale skin under my forearm. The clerk came over to help me and was delighted with the idea. Since I'm a white person who was once a golden-haired urchin, the color is a pinky-yellow whitish neutral.

Pam here…I had a white kitchen…no money for new. I painted my walls Warm Muffin by Behr Paints. It is a golden yellow that made everything POP and SPARKLE. It was essentially a neutral. I could do sage greens, grey blues, burgundies, eggplant colors with it. I don’t know the precise undertone in Warm Muffin…but I have used it for 15 plus years and people keep asking me what it is and Home Depot still has the formula and still makes it for anyone who asks for it.

I'm house hunting and I cringe everytime I see the owners have painted the wood cabinets. Most people don't do a good job and they are streaky and the doors stick trying to open them. I'm much happier seeing kitchens with natural wood cabinets.

My home was built in 1858 and the kitchen is enormous with 12’ ceilings. My cabinets are a mahogany cherry finish. One outside wall has one long countertop for all of my small appliances like my KitchenAid mixer [attachments including pasta maker, food processor, ice cream bowl, etc.], Keurig, pressure cooker, blender, juicer, panini press, indoor grill, and ice maker for pellet ice. Three islands: two smaller ones with stainless steel countertops [one for prepping, one for cooking], and one large one with a huge sink, dishwasher, and trash/recycling cabinets. That one has a soapstone countertop.

I’m in total agreement. We used BM Historical paint colors on the interior and exterior of our historic 1868 home in a mining camp in the mountains. Amazing colors and tones that I still love 30 years later. I’m considering using those paints in my 1920 farmhouse in the valley. The houses are very different but I think the BM historical colors will work well in both.

I have fond memories of the all-white kitchen in my first apartment. It was clean and bright and my collection of cobalt blue glasses really made it pop. I plan to paint my current kitchen before the end of the year and am leaning towards putty simply because that color works with the existing white appliances and I'm working with an open floor plan with a lot going on in the kitchen/living room space.

As someone who used to mix paint the 3 most difficult colors to color match were grays, beiges and oddly enough, greens. Keep your paint color names, samples and brand names in a safe place!

I remember going to the slab yard and finding this beautiful bathroom display. I bought this apricot and beige tile only to discover when the contractors installed the tile there was lots of grey in the tile too. Luckily I like the gray so the color schemes worked out nicely.

I painted my cabinets a medium greige maybe a mid 60s lrv. I couldn't find the right greige color, so I mixed all five samples together, and it was the perfect color so i had it color matched and mixed in the right finish. My walls are Sw pure white, and I'm using the same greige mix on my trim, baseboards and interior doors. I love it!! Now I want to paint just one wall behind my tv a muted sage that will give some color, but still keep the neutral look overall neutral look I love. Thanks for the color recommendations!

I am so happy I am not the only one, I cannot stand white kitchen cabinets they remind me of the medicine room in the hospital (I am a nurse) I loved deep wood colors, that is classic to me. Hi in the next couple of years I am going to completely rebuild the kitchen. My house was built in the early 30's towards the end of art deco. I am thinking of using the colour palette of the era but in a modern way. I know my budget won't allow for real stone but I am thinking french blue cabinets with butcher block counter tops with a cream/beige walls including subway tiles in a matching colour. I am undecided about the flooring I cant decide on a cream floor tile or traditional quarry tile or vinyl laminate.

Notice how now the walls are now going all white as opposed to grey. If you stick with white cabinets you can change all the other colors in kitchen. You can change your color scheme. I have accessible beige on all my walls. I had it mixed at 75% so it is lighter. I love the color. It changes with the light and it is a lovely warm neutral.

You either have to go 1.5 to 2 shades lighter or darker. 2 shades darker than AB is darker than most want to do in their living spaces right now. I'd say go with a pretty off-white like SW Pure White or BM White Dove. Can also think about SW Heron Plume, which would be really nice.

What are your thoughts on black cabinets? We have a lot of cabinets on the room. Paired with brass handles and a brass faucet. The island would be stained wood, mahogany, so darker. The counter tops are white with gold veins (quartz). White walls. We have several large windows in the kitchen. Is that too dark, or will it be out of style very soon?

Most quartz will work really well with Simply White. From personal experience, I'd forgo the white and choose stainless steel.

I'd go with a pretty, soft white like White Dove. Alternatively, you can go much darker (about 1.5 shades darker than Pale) but most people want a lighter color than that.

White kitchens will always be timeless. My only issue with them is when people don’t realize that having such a fresh clean look can make the rest of your house look dowdy. The rest of the home has to be in keeping with the overall style.

I color drenched the butler’s pantry I built with BM Oil Cloth. When I was painting it on it looked brown and it sorta faked me out. Then when everything is done it’s definitely a grayed sage color. Looks great with the white oak shelves and it never shows dust. 😂
