Reuben called her Mary, and so Mary called him Reuben! Those are their given names! Like everyone of us, Reuben was born title less , nameless and naked . So I don’t know where some people get this idea that people should treat them with reverence and veneration.. Reuben Abati needs to grow up ! His old age hasn’t given Nigeria 24 hours light! Maybe when he achieves that feat of giving Nigeria light permanently , we would all call him “Sir”,”Lord”, “Dr”, “Mayor”, “Chief”, “Your majesty”… ….in the meantime, he is plain old Reuben Abati! Reuben to me , that is !

You lot want to follow everything the West does. Can't you think for yourselves and set your own standards??? Don't be so keen to follow somebody else's standard. You are wrong about addressing Boris Johnson by name. If the Prime Minister is speaking to people who know him personally, then it is by name. However, if he is being interviewed by a journalist, who does not have a personal relationship with him, then he is addressed as Prime Minister. The young woman was out of line. She should have referred to him as Dr Abati, simples! It does not cost anything. However, i am disappointed with Dr Abati for speaking to her the way he did. He should have waited for the opportunity to speak to her off the air. No need to embarrass the woman. We are Afrikans. WE MUST SET OUR OWN STANDARDS.

People are addressed by their first names as it eases tension in the work environment as brings out the best in people. The veteran is just being a Bully and we see this everyday. Following through with the name thing while discussing with others typifies the intention to bully as it is unprofessional. Too much emphasis on respect is what is killing productivity in Africa as ideas are not allowed to flourish by elders. You don't find that in Western cultures as their eyes are focused on goal getting rather than who is pleased. Bullying in the work environment should be discouraged in all its appearances including this one

What is Nigeria turning into? Is calling someone by his first name now a sin? A friendly and humble way of addressing people as colleagues at workplaces is to use their first names because it’s not about displaying titles. I have even known CEOs of many companies that want to be called by their first names even by the lowest grades of staff in their companies because they treat them as colleagues. A few things need to be pointed out here: 1. They are colleagues truly. BUT HE IS A SENIOR COLLEAGUE. 2. He has a professional title she could have used: Dr. 3. There is no professional rule in journalism that prescribes to practitioners how they should address each other. Yes, it is a norm that they use first names but it is not a rule. So, basically, she addressing him as 'Reuben' and even doing it repeatedly is both a sign that she's just imitating the West too or a proof of her disrespectful self in this case. 4. Even the West sometimes imitated know when and how to accord respect when it comes to addressing themselves. It's why Sir Alex Ferguson is Sir and even the Prime Minister Boris Johnson you mentioned is Prime Minister. 5. She is not a newbie. For someone who has two degrees in Mass Communication and has worked elsewhere before, she can't bail out on account of being naive. Maybe the fact that she's now in the SW where emphasis is laid more on cultural honour in the manner of addressing one another as against the SE where she was before, has contributed to this though. 5. We are Africans. There are a few things that still make us distinct and this is one of them. It is cultural.

In any professional world either West or South you address people as Mr/Mrs/Dr and even in the west reporters will address you as such and someone like Doctor Abati should have been addressed as Doctor Abati not Reuben by a junior colleague, he earn the title Doctor at any time. We are people of culture and traditions and I guess we have lost it, YES, Dr. Abati was wrong for correcting her on the air because 2 wrongs do not make a right and he should apologize to her on the air because it is unprofessional to do so and Nigerians should learn how to correct or argue with each other without any abusive words or language.

If you've accepted the profession I think you should be fine with the ethics and at least practiceit professionally. Some people are now saying because I bought my car with my money, I can drive it the way I like. First of all, it's a farce that all media colleagues are called by their first name. You MAY do that only if the senior colleague wishes to be addressed so or if it is company's policy. Otherwise, you must find out how the person wishes to be addressed, especially if you're unfamiliar with them. If they have titles, by all means you must show respect and use those titles. Of course, he should have been more circumspect, less sensitive about it on air. The idea that all white people wish to be called by their first name is fallacious. It's not true. We see foreign media too. Every one with a secular title must be addressed with their titles. It's media etiquette. This not a free for all.

Don't rush to criticize or condemn Dr. Ruben Abati; not all Yoruba men from his generation would feel at ease with a younger person addressing them by their first name. While this might be acceptable in some other tribes, I believe he could have corrected her privately instead of doing so on air. If Rufai, Tundu, and Orji, who are older, refer to him as Dr. Abati, let's acknowledge that it may sound somewhat unusual. In African culture, unlike in European cultures, age holds significant importance to people.

I know Reuben as a print journalist and not a broadcast (or what is it called?) journalist. Was he trained before he was employed by Arise TV. Professionally the woman was doing her work. The woman would not have called him Reuben if she met him malong the corridor or canteen in the premises of Arise TV. For Abati (won't put Dr. Infront of his name because he disgraced us) to reprimand the woman on live TV was the height of unprofessionalism. The other day Abiola's daughter (what is her name?) was also blowing hot on live TV because according to her a guest insulted her late father. I wonder why Arise TV decided to hire "names" and not trained professional broadcasters. The TV station definitely does not deserve any local or international awards in broadcasting.

Being a Nigerian she should know better (abi Abati don toast am before?), We are Africans with rich culture, we don’t have to jettison our whole culture to adopt another’s in the name of international standards. British women will curtsy (kneel) and men will bow to greet the queen. The queen will not expect this from foreigners. It is good to be aware of the culture of the area you operate to fit in properly. Even Prince Charles, the owner of queen’s English spoke Nigerian Pidgin English in his address when he came to Nigeria.
