I live in a 500 yr old cottage with stone walls etc so reclaimed wood has been a major part of my style for many years. I think if you always decorate in keeping with your house's style, age and location, it will never look dated.

So true! In our last place we had a stucco and red tiled tall-ceilinged Mediterranean style house, and the interior was very “Tuscan-inspired” -but even after the Tuscan style was not in fashion anymore (except in Tuscany,) it still looked great in that particular home because it matched the whole structure, and everything was high quality stone and solid wood. If we were in a mid-century modern ranch house, I would have not felt the same way about the Tuscan decor, it would have felt a little cheesy and dated.

Yeah, that’s easy to say when you have a unique home. For the rest of us who live in suburbia with a stock house like every other, how do you stick with the aesthetic and expound on that? These houses have zero character. No story. No history. I would love to live in an older house, but it just isn’t feasible for a myriad of reasons. We must take into account the neighborhood (especially with kids) and the commute, on top of how hard it is to buy around here, without multiple competing offers. Be grateful you don’t have to reinvent or try to adopt a style that won’t look too out of place, but can turn your bland and basic house into a cozy and inviting home. Your home sounds like a dream!

I was over the moon to hear you say that. I'm foreclosing on a contract to reconstruct (from the inside) a 200 year old stone mason's cottage. It boasts 16" stone walls with 200 year old floor joists that have been carved to lay upon their chiseled rock cradles. Since we are going for radiant heat flooring... I want to salvage those joists and other interior beams prior to restructuring. Other than esthetically, would you say they are valuable were I to sell some to offset the costs?

I don't go by trends, i go by what works/what i like, I've had the same lamp for over ten years and i use it so i don't have to get a ladder to change the actual ceiling light. The lamp just changed shade colors and im trying to paint the walls the colors i like because i have little to no budget to fart around with paint.

I'm so glad all grey everything is going away! When we were looking for houses, I'd see listing photos that I honestly thought were B&W photos because there was so little color, if any. Grey is a sophisticated color, but only when paired with something like navy, chocolate brown, or teal. Then it can really feel rich but as a supporting cast member, not the starring role. Love your style, Nick, and I love how you don't condescend toward people who like styles that are trending out.

I have a chocolate brown couch which sure it's getting to where in a few years I'll replace it but I never thought of gray next to that shade of brown. It looks quite stunning when I finally decided to pair it. Gray & navy are my absolute favorite combo but it can be tricky as well.

My opinion is that Grey just makes the home feel neutral enough so you can imagine your own style in it without looking too dated. I personally love Grey but there are ways to warm it up with textures.

I find grays to be too cold, so I've never been a fan of that trend. You nailed it - it's more of an accent color and too much gray loses it's sophistication and ends up just looking blah as a main color.

Spot on! I teach Interior Design and teaching the difference between cool colors and warm is a focus of mine. Living in New England (cold 6 months of the year), the all gray trend makes everything so cold, lifeless, and depressing. Maybe a video on warm vs. cool colors and where they "belong" would be great!

That is such an interesting point, makes complete sense. I on the other hand live on the Brazilian coast - very very tropical - but the use of cool colors often looks detached, as we're surrounded by palm trees and an overall warm environment. If they make cold places seem colder (New England) but feel out of place in warmer ones (Brazil), I wonder where/how exactly they would fit

Totally agree with both of you, Nova Scotia has weather that is super close to New England. Someone renovated my basement before we got it to be all greige. And I cannot stand it (also the whole upper is warm, like what?) Also my mom lives in sunny (tropical?) Florida and just put in the greige look and I agree it feels totally out of place.

​@@andremedeiros2181 I think otherwise, Brazil looks (at least in photos) really amazing with those cold yellows, blues and greens. Maybe it's a matter of taste, and I'm such a fan of vibrant colors! I think Brazil can rock any color, as long as it's highly saturated, like their tropical flowers and birds :D I think Morocco is another example of warm environment with a great use of cold tones ❤

Wealth management should be warm inviting and rich but restrained looking in green and golds like their logo. But of course they never ask me for interior design advice because no one in my family does even though I'm a interior designer 🙄 and I know what people actually like . They just follow the trends instead if thinking timeless and how it works for the actual feeling they are going for. Its surprising that previous strangers trust me with their home yet my family won't.

My gauge for when a trend is over is the second that I see it on any of the home flipping shows. This is the official indicator that the trend has become the Anne Hathaway cerulean sweater of interior design.

Sadly the overuse of cheap dryer lint grey paint has not died, despite being the darling of flippers and landlords everywhere. (BTW, I'm not knocking a good quality beautiful grey paint used carefully.)

Not knocking beige colors there's some really beautiful ones but the one that everybody was obsessed with in the '90s oh that was ugly. And the same thing happened as what a lot of people do with gray inside a house outside of the house. You're sofa included.

Part of the problem is that trends get overdone or exaggerated and become kitschy and tiring.

When trends start to trend seriously, they get copied with cheap materials. When cheap materials take over, the trend also becomes very ubiquitous, in a debased form, then nobody wants to be associated with it, and it becomes a deceased trend.

Yes. Many of these design elements are just fine, but they’ve become so overdone with mass reproduction. Even real diamonds, gold and Ricky Martin shirtless look tacky when there are too many of them.

This! Why even bother with interior design trends (apart from selling those trends as designer or company)? A house or a flat is nothing you change all the time. Of course companies want to sell you their useless stuff and for them the best thing is that a trend changes fast! Timeless style with good quality products and you are all sorted. If you fancy mixing it up you can still change pillow covers, art (though also here quality paintings stay nice for decades) e. g. A nice home that is completely "untrendy" is still a nice home. Bauhaus, Nordic or Japanese style, traditional Cottages, ... You hardly are able to tell when exactly someone created them. Maybe it is just me but if an interior designer would be like "this is so trendy/untrendy right now" I wouldn't hire them.

I remember the confetti terazzo that was used during my childhood in Lebanon in the 60's - the inclusions were really small and 99% of the time it was for back staircases, mudrooms and laundry areas to brighten them up a bit. It was seen as a nice way to reuse construction debris but not for general living spaces. I look at the current version with these massive chunks of whatever and just roll my eyes. Thank God the reclaimed wood thing is fading as after we came to America in the 70s, I spent a lot of my formative years in Maine and in many cases, people were forced to use reclaimed wood, including shiplap scavenged from wrecked vessels, to construct and repair houses as they had no other option due to their economic situation. I honestly just shake my head looking at a wall of "heritage" shiplap (it is a thing) here in the Dallas area that is thousands of miles from its origins where it truly did serve its intended purpose, putting food on someone's table..and then providing them shelter.

Oh My God! I am from Turkey and was thinking exactly the same thing about Terazzo! We never use it for indoors and it's always a public space/public building/outside material for me too, so I cannot imagine just slabing it anywhere inside my house. It feels way too official/public building and not homey at all! It's a little weird for me to see others use these pieces and have them as a trend, creates a feeling of dissonance for me

The gray trend has recently felt like it’s playing with my eyes. When I see pictures of homes that are all gray, or gray and white, I feel like I’m seeing things in black and white. It’s like living in a monochromatic world.

Yes, all neutral homes just look like hotel rooms to me. I prefer either light and breezy neutrals with some bold accents, for a more modern, editorial look or pastels or moody vintage colours for a more cozy look. All of my student housing, furnished company housing etc. have been all white, grey and black. I just can't feel settled and at home in these soulless spaces anymore.

Grey and white are a nice base on walls though. Lovely green plants 🌱 always look good with a light background too. We have some soft pastel warm living room furniture, some navy blue as well, warm light woods and a striking rug. The light grey and white is a fresh backdrop to all the colorful textiles you might want to add. 🎨 But, I feel when people go overboard with white/grey/neutral everything, it’s like sour and stale, no life in the room,🧂🥛📄 🍦🦴too plain.

I love colour, so I feel the same. With both indoor and outdoor design. I have walls that are green, very light pink, periwinkle, a creamy yellow, and one room had a gold-ish accent wall I decided to keep. Mostly because it matches the border at the top of the walls that has a shiny look to it that's really unique. I also like the warmth as the place was built in the 73 and renovated in 99, so warm colours were more in then. Red oak floors, warm wallpapers, some weird gold door handles... I like it so much better than all the grey and silver, so when I replaced some old doorknobs with handles (for accessibility), I went with a gold colour. I prefer to wear silvers and greys, but prefer to live in warmer colours.

I have to also go on record that - like transporting plants and firewood - transporting reclaimed wood from one region to another also has the possibility of introducing insect larvae that are non-native to the region and can potentially threaten entire forests. This problem is already playing out with Oak trees on the East and West Coast being killed off by bark beetles as well as various other native plant species that have no defense against non-native parasitic insects.

The trouble with "reclaimed wood" - as seen in most of the pictures you showed us, is that it's anything but reclaimed wood. In most pictures we saw mass produced, fake "reclaimed" wood - and that was all the hype some years ago and absolutely gaudy. We were talking vinyl, plyboard, extremely cheap pine or laminate treated to look distressed, treated so every plank looks different. You can even see this ex-trend in floors from about 6-8 years ago where it's actually tiles made to look like wood that's been distressed. Authentic (quality) salvaged wood on the other hand is so important from a sustainability perspective, using wood with a real patina. In my Edwardian home, when I bought it I had to get rid of most of the floors as the planks were rotten but now the wood is reclaimed Oregon pine from other homes or buildings of the time period that had been removed - and no engineered hardwood or laminate can replace authenticity.

Reclaimed wood can be treated, sanded and re-finished, unlike the "trend" shown in this video. I have a reclaimed wood desktop and it's not rustic looking and even well polished. It looks like regular wood!

I think it's also important to have a carpenter who is very experienced in reclaiming and working with reclaimed wood. I have reclaimed oak kitchen cabinets and I love them. They were professionally refinished and look like new wood, and they certainly don't smell! I'm shocked to hear about that. I think somebody just didn't know what they were doing.

I think the smell thing comes from using inappropriately sourced wood and lack of proper finishing and treatment. Palette wood is the first thing that comes to mind, made from the cheapest junk and often dowsed in shit tons of who knows what from its time spent in industrial shipping. I've been to a few pallet bonfires and those things can be rank as hell

This is cracking me up. My ex and I built our house 5 yrs ago and he argued for many of these trends. I argued against many of them... hahaha. It's sweet being right. Basically no fake things: no fake distressed wood. No fake grey floors. No fake farm aesthetic.

My grandparents were farmers in the first half of the 20th century, and there's no way my grandma would have any outdoor farm implement or container (buckets, chick feeders, wash boards) in her house. She wanted as beautiful interior as she could afford. She had a yellow kitchen with white wainscot and glass front cabinets where she kept her multi-colored dishes. She had a cast iron wood stove for baking bread and an electric stove for canning. She had navy blue wallpaper with huge pink cabbage flowers in the parlor with a piano and plants in an oval alcove with floor to ceiling windows. No, modern farm house style is...odd.

I have a beautiful blanket box made from demolition wood from a historic harbourfront warehouse from the waterfront of my city. I have had if for forty years and it is a lifetime piece for me. It gives me a sense of place. That is the type of reclaimed wood that is timeless to me.

Grey wood flooring is probably my #1 least favourite interior design trend. A warm space is so important to me and I feel like you immediately take any ounce of cozy out of a space when you add grey floors. A couple of friends have intentionally put grey hardwood flooring into their homes in the last 5 years and every time I want to scream "WHYYY???" hahaha.

I agree. While docks, shingles, etc. do turn naturally gray, that is because they are outside. It is clear that gray flooring didn’t get that way naturally. Always felt fake to me.

I totally agree. Have always hated the gray floor idea. When I went to buy luxury vinyl plank flooring a year and a half ago it was really hard to find something that was not very very dark or gray. Luckily I was able to find a mid tone brown natural looking wood plank.

Just a comment about gray wood. We had unvarnished teak trim around the stern and on the steps of the ladder that went to the flybridge on our boat . We decided to let the sun bleach them and they became the most gorgeous multi shades of gray I've ever seen.

I have a beautiful weathered teak altar, reclaimed from another building (two trends in one!). And looking at it, I suspect what Nick would say is that the undertones are still a warm color - mine, at least, has a sort of lovely honey tone under the grey; a sense of sunshine, if you will. It definitely doesn’t have any cool tones in it, even for being grey. (And it’s a pain in the butt to find wood pieces that match it!)

Yeah this, lots of weathered woods become grey, or grey-ish over time. It's not an "unnatural" colour as he called it. It's just that none of the popular floors etc are actually aged wood, they are either stained or printed.

I literally stopped the video and laughed when he said that. 😂 I have always lived in rural communities around barns, sheds and wooden fences that people didn't treat, and they almost always turn grey over time. There's even a bunch of houses in Salem that are painted black because it became the traditional color after the untreated wood turned that greyish black on it's own in the 17th century.

I think the main problem is people getting things they want without thinking of what will surround it. My little, very Western style cabin looks great out here in Idaho, but would look extremely tacky in a city. Same goes for my neighbors very modern house which would look amazing in a city, but is just out of place in a rural setting. For example, I think that reclaimed wood works really well and will stay fashionable for ages in the Mountain West. We have so much reclaimed wood here that it can be cheaper than the fake stuff and since it's so dry, it's rarely moldy or gross. Plus, since we're actually out in the middle of nowhere, it fits the style. Every design style has its place and will work if given enough thought and in the right setting. I think people are so caught up in their Pinterest boards that they forget to look around at the house they already have. Even the cheapest, tackiest items can find their place and look amazing. You can make any style timeless with spending ridiculous amounts if you just focus on making sure that you're not fighting against what you already have.

Love my gray floors, but I’m mixing it with lots of black and a few bold jewel tone pops. I love cool tones and hate beige. Also, I grew up on the west coast and the gray wood reminds me of the weathered wood on houses on the Sonoma Coast, so it does feel natural to me.

The problem with trends is that they are trends. Any item of any style can look great and timeless. You just need to personalize your interior according to your true needs and passions, character of the architecture and the geografical area. And not just follow what's in fashion. I painted my flat gray before it was trendy, not because I hate colours but because I love it. I wanted the perfect background to my books, paintings and colourful ferniture to look good, and they do. My decor doesn't look outdated 'cause it never was trendy ;)

The bare bulb lighting trend has always reminded me of those scences in movies, in an interrogation room, with the bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. Not so warm and cozy. Not to mention the harshenss of the light.

As far as cheap gold and cheap brass is concerned, I don’t have real gold money and chrome is boring to me. I’m never going to let gold go. I’ve been using gold in decor and my clothes accessories for decades now. I’m happy to replace old cheap gold with new cheap gold 😂 Love the video

I mostly buy vintage brass. It's still surprisingly cheap for the quality, and you can tell the difference (the patina adds depth). A lot of the mid-century pieces fit well with modern decor.

Still loving my grey couch and grey walls; however, it was never ALL grey. We have cherry red wood floors and the living room opens through an archway into a dining room that’s a dark, smoky teal. Also, we have art on those grey walls. Grey is amazing to give the eye a rest and if you like cool tones. People need to stop hating on it in a general way; I totally agree the problem is when the space is monochromatic.

I think grey wood floors are an extension of the reclaimed wood trend. Wood will often go silver/grey when it ages (think docks, barn sides, unfinished fence planks, etc.). So as the reclaimed (and fake reclaimed) wood trend winds down it makes a lot of sense that grey-tinted wood flooring will also fade away.

Years ago, 31 years actually, yikes! I had painted our bedroom a light grey with white trim, it was a ' century home ' with gorgeous old wooden floors and I loved it. I got really ill and because I was pregnant, I was in bed in that room for weeks. OMG, asap after giving birth I painted it a lovely light sort of sage green. I find that both of these colours are back in style now, when I was painting recently, everyone was suggesting this grey that's really trendy right now .. UGH .. never again, I went with a lovely light sort of sage green.

Hate hate hate the grey trend but especially in “wood.” The beauty of wood is its warmth, I think. I also don’t like the bleached/blonde wood trend that seems to be replacing it for the same reasons. I like my grey sofa and other grey things …. It’s a nice light neutral color and makes it easy to decorate for different holidays and the grey doesn’t clash with pastels in spring or reds and greens at Christmas time 😁

I love gray. My floors are LVP that are gray-brown depending on the lighting at the time. Both natural woods and other furniture go so well with it. My rug is a mix of grieve, teal, light blue and a touch of gray. Gray is most kind to my sensitive eyes and reduces headaches.

I still think I’ll do terrazzo in my basement bathroom. In very neutral, natural colors. My son is afraid of the basement and I need to make it cheerier, so I thought Terazzo would be a good solution for it. I totally agree with your opinions here! I usually avoid trends, and go for classic, eclectic, but it’s nice to do something fun sometimes.

Yes I still enjoy the terrazzo, but in the neutral tones. It’s a bit more subtle with say different shades of creme, brown, and white so you still get the pattern, but in a much more understated way

My mother has a dining table made from reclaimed railway sleepers, it is heavy solid oak, custom made by a carpenter and polished, no smell, looks stylish not like the reclaimed rough pallet wood style stuff. In other words reclaimed can be done stylishly and is an excellent choice for the environment but if it’s cheap junk it will always look like it!

@yneqe Thanks, I had no idea so I have been checking out and it seems it would have been forbidden to make a table from creosote soaked railway sleepers when my mother’s was made so either I remembered incorrectly what the wood was reclaimed from or it was from untreated sleepers… I will ask her next time I talk to her as that is a serious concern.

I went grey after decades of beige, browns and reds - it depends on the tone. I like the cool toned greys - they are a great background to all my plants and other pops of colour. It is very soothing and easy to live with. Besides, it’s only paint. When I get tired of it, I’ll change it. I still have dark brown and beige floors that go with everything. That’s how you can change trends easily just by changing the colours on your walls. Also, my untreated fence outside has turned grey over time so it is a ‘natural’ colour. As natural as any of the other hardwood floor finishes out there - maybe even more so. 👍🥰

I agree with the grey. I have never found it a welcoming colour and it just makes a room look gloomy. I prefer slight off-whites with a more cream, beige, mushroom undertone as it can still look neutral but with a warmer undertone that still goes with anything you add.

I’m in a farmhouse but there’s nothing reclaimed in here. The old pig barn on our property hasn’t had pigs in it for 60 years but still carries a faint odor of…..well, you know. And I’m with you a thousand percent on the gray wood flooring. Gray wood means it’s been out in the weather for eons so it’s possibly rotten and full of bugs. Don’t want that in my house, nope. This is what I’ve been saying for years! My grandparents were farmers and their home looked nothing like “farmhouse” decor. Yes, they had beautiful aged quilts and furniture was bought for a lifetime. But my grandmother was incredibly excited to get something that was new and looked it. I still love open light fixtures. I clean houses & my pet peeve is cleaning glass/enclosed lighting. It’s so much easier to dust and thoroughly clean an open fixture. Easier to replace bulbs and even easier to install (most of the time). I’m always thinking of ‘the clean’ aspect when I change out things in my home, and open lighting almost makes me giddy when I clean for a client.

I still kind of like that “funfetti” Terazzo - it makes me think of pieces of Jell-o in whipped cream. I think an “all white” kitchen (high gloss, smooth front cabinets; integrated appliances; white floor; white backsplash) would look cheeky and fun with a funfetti terazzo worktop either on the main counters *or* an island. Especially if you’re fortunate enough to have large windows in the kitchen. You could then bring in more colours in linens, crockery, etc. Vintage Fiestaware pottery would be a nice accessory.

My opinion on why some of these trends end up not being long lasting even when we think they would or should: 1) circular popularity. Things that are popular *because* they are popular. Fads are a very short term version of circular popularity, but it also applies to years-long trends and brand loyalty etc. 2) there's a difference between "oh that's pretty for a home" and "oh that's pretty for MY home." There are many many styles that I like the looks of, but would never put in my own home because it's just not "me". I think some people just get swept up in the "oh it's pretty" and "oh its trendy" and just never consider whether the trend actually fits their taste. 3) trends get overdone. We see it everywhere and get tired of it. Or, we overuse it in our own homes and get tired of it. 4) trends in one medium get applied to other media, specifically hard media (floors/walls/countertops) to soft media (pillows/blankets) and vice versa. Or from one purpose to another (floor to water bottle). So, terrazzo, which belongs anywhere concrete could be, such as floors or maybe countertops, being applied to pillows and water bottles. Reclaimed wood, which belongs wherever wood belongs, being applied to decorative cardboard boxes. 5) when it's done super cheaply. This applies to points 3 and 4. The contact paper or digital print version of terrazzo or reclaimed wood will always look like you cheaped out, so you need to be careful about using it.

Yes! I grew up in a beach town and throughout the years I have collected some really great pieces of driftwood. I have some of the smaller pieces displayed in appropriate areas of my house and larger pieces out in my yard. I love the faded wood colors in driftwood, but have no desire for unnatural gray flooring.

HI Amber - NHK yt channel has a series called "a zero waste life" about craftspeople in Japan repurposing everything from umbrellas to old wood parts and glass from old buildings. Also, NHK has at least one video on kintsugi which is the art of repairing broken ceramics and accenting the breakage lines with gold or silver - truly gorgeous. As for old wood - finding old wood furniture, strip and wax (or varnish) it and you have a gorgrous piece.

I think the biggest crime to me was the fake reclaimed wood. Hmm... this was a tree a few months ago, and someone's just brushed on iron oxide and then hit it with a chain a bunch. It's a crime against nature, up there with shabby chic distressed paint that has been produced in a factory.

Reclaimed wood fits in with a rustic (not necessarily 'farmhouse') look and in a warehouse look. But not to the average suburban home. My grandmother's house was all white. Partly because they didn't have access to all sorts of paint colors. But it is also very easy to clean and tell you have cleaned it. One issue I have with 'barnwood' is how rough it can be. If not planed and sanded smooth, it will catch EVERY bit of dust and pet hair and hang on for dear life. Almost impossible to keep clean. I also have a problem with backsplashes made of that 'layered stone' that isn't smooth and flat. Put that behind a stove and you get a nasty nightmare mess if you cook much.

When I had hard flooring laid in my house, grey was far from my choice, but when the flooring people bought samples to look at I found that all the "brownish" wood tones did not go with my natural timber furniture. There was just too much wood. The sample of grey actually seemed to highlight the wood furniture so I went with that. My house doesn't look cold because there is colour in the furniture (wood and other) and furnishings - no grey there.

YES! I've been waiting for a video like this, these types of developments are just so fascinating to think about! It could easily become a series (if you enjoyed making it), especially when you consider how many people throw around the word "timeless" all the time, being so confident in their predictions... some of them will inevitably be wrong. Personally, I think the "beige postmodern" wave will have a similar fate as the "all grey" one. People love to talk about how "timeless" and "natural" beige is (which sure, it is, but not as an "everywhere" type of color!) but it's actually really easy to grow tired of. Our eyes are made to work for nature as an environment and nature is never all beige. These types of rooms are also full of man made materials like powder-coated metals (all the same color, no texture, no imperfections) and supposedly "organic" shapes which are actually way to perfect (like perfect circles, waves etc.) Like do you know anyone who could even DRAW these shapes perfectly? Does anything in nature ever grow that way? And how did all these "unique" shapes look so manufactured and repetitive so fast? Why is everyone calling this timeless? I'm sorry, I guess it just had to get out. Thank you to anyone reading this :D

I think the biggest problem with grey is too many people that that was the end of their color pallette. No, use the grey as a base then add color. And I kind of like the unnatural grey wood in my parents house they did a fake wood tile in that kind of color and then did the walls a light purple it looks great.

I love my grey cabinets and trims. I chose the color without knowing it was a trend when we built our house. The light grey I very carefully chose is a true grey without any blue or green tone in it. I opted for glassed cabinet doors to show colorful tea sets and dinnerware for the doors at the center at the center only. Curtains are layers of sheer white and silver. It looks very classy with modern white furniture, glassware, fur rug and media center + espresso flooring. When you create a sedated environment, you can feel rested to work and think in it and also have fun with color accents coming from paintings on the walls and other essential household items. It's all a matter of taste and how you make it work in my opinion. I wouldn't use grey everywhere of course. I like my grey still after 5 years. At the same time, as we look for our next house, I wouldn't choose grey but some other color I like. I won't pay much attention to the trend of the moment this time either.

Thank you, Nick, for including the "all grey" trend here. I have never liked it. Pictures of all grey rooms look like black and white pictures to me and gloomy - who would choose to live in a storm cloud? It also appears to be a knee jerk/lazy choice for mass home builders - a safe neutral without regard to other home features. I suspect going forward all grey will be associated with a distinct time period and seem dated in the same way mauve and teal or harvest gold, orange, and avocado green do today.

I felt the same way about the all-grey look. I like grey a lot, but it starts to look a bit sad and cold. When I designed my bedroom this year, I decided to paint the walls plum, use some brass accents, and make my bedding and dresser different shades of grey and silver. Your videos r so good, fun, and informative! They have been a welcome break recently as I have cared for a special needs family member w cancer. I was never a fan of the reclaimed wood or the terrazzo. The terrazzo that is subtle is a different matter; it looks more authentic.

Loved your vid as always! Glad you covered the grey everything. I currently live in my bros basement which has grey vinyl flooring which is like what you have in the vid. At first thought it was a really cool feature of the house but now I understand why it doesn’t feel as homey as it could, no matter what I do. My problem with reclaimed wood from barns or abandoned homes and buildings is that it’s been walked on, peed on, pooped on, etc. by critters over the life of the building it came from. Like Nick said, the smell of all that probably not been eliminated before the wood is installed. I doubt the wood can be cleaned enough without destroying it.

I have a reclaimed wood desktop and it looks and feels like new wood! I can see the trend is about the distressed look, but reclaimed wood can be treated, sanded and re-finished and it functions like new wood!

About 11 yrs ago I worked for a high end home furnishings store that is sometimes mentioned here. We carried a reclaimed wooden table that was limited edition as the wood was from flooring from a beer distillery overseas. It smelt AMAZING. 😉😂

If you put it out in the sun, the sun will remove a lot of those odors. People who work with true reclaimed wood know ways to cleanse it of odors.

@@dsquared1950 you have got to be kidding me. Old barns have never been animal tight. Raccoons, rats, birds, etc all nest in barns, corn cribs, sheds etc wherever they stand. I live on a farm and have seen the walls, support boards and such covered in the urine and poop of all types of critters. Even the animals who are supposed to be there do their business on the walls, stalls and such. I just wonder what chemicals are needed to “reclaim” the wood. I don’t care if someone wants use incorporate reclaimed wood in their home or office, but I would not. Just saying.

Oh, how I hated the all-gray trend which seemed to go on endlessly, year after year, and people actually bought into this en masse. My style is English country house, and has been for many decades, so I steered clear of just about every trend, although I do have two beautiful Chinoiserie lamps. Even those make sense since I collect antique Chinese porcelain. and they are also very much a part of the English country house aesthetic. My taste has evolved, as it should, but in a sort of leisurely way where I never had to throw or give away much of anything (well, the old living room couch resides in the garage now), and it's satisfying to know that so little has been wasted or unloved.

I found what you were saying about the sense of place is particularly important. Acknowledging and working with the style of where you are is key to longevity of design. Even if the burbs are generic, there is a locality to be aware of.

I applaud people who can keep up with trends! I still have 1980's cabinets and oak trim everywhere! I really don't like painting wood and I still have carpeted floors. I might be weird but I like the look and everything feels like it's well made compared to a lot of newer stuff I have looked at! I do like grey and I have painted my kitchen a nice shade because it looked good with my new appliances. I feel like it's really hard to keep up and expensive as well so I don't even attempt to be trendy!

I think THE most important thing is that YOU like your home. You are right. Getting caught up in trends is a never ending hamster wheel. Some people might love the ride, while others become nauseated by the constant movement. There is something to be said about the comfort of familiarity.

It's hard when things wear out and you don't want to spend tons so you Have to pick from more trendy stuff, then it looks out of place. Wish quality "basic" wasn't so expensive because everyone wants the cheap trendy stuff to keep up w the jones and that's what's most affordable

I legitimately have some reclaimed wood on my wall haha but I'm not renting scaffolding to take it down. Owell!! It is one aspect of one wall, not my entire house. The colorful terrazzo was never something I could get behind. True traditional terrazzo is beautiful and can be timeless, but the colorful kind just got taken wayyy too far and became cheap looking. Like you have said, the originals can be timeless, but the "budget friendly" prints are not timeless.

Grey is my favorite neutral, especially for walls or tile, because I find it so soothing. But I very much prefer that to be complimented by wood and colorful rugs, and warm furniture colors.

The way you've done grey looks very nice. You've contrasted it with warm woods & metals which looks richer & warmer than a monochromatic cool toned palette of grey on grey or B & W does. The only room painted grey in my house is the bedroom I use as a painting studio & it took a couple tries to find the equivalent of middle grey (doesn't skew towards blue, purple or yellow, green) in house paint. I don't like white walls in an art studio due to simultaneous contrast & eye fatigue when color mixing/matching under artificial white lights. Any color on the walls can reflect & be problematic so grey was the best choice for that reason. My bedroom/masterbath is a soft pale blue & my office is a muted. pale lavender. All 3 rooms are upstairs & get very hot in the Summer so I opted for cool, pale walls that encouraged tranquility.

I like the terrazzo 🥰 It doesn't have to go all over the floors, walls and ceilings... but how fun as a counter top from which you can pull colours for paint or furniture! I love it! It adds a uniqueness :) And you can even use it where there may be too much grey... I am also not a huge fan of grey. Grey floors are awful 😣

I bought a dining room table top made from reclaimed wood off Etsy and love it. It’s from a tobacco barn the next state over and so very much of this region, and my house is in a rural area with lots of farms. You can even see the original marks fro the band saw in it. So, I think it’s all about whether the reclaimed wood is actually re-proposed wood or the cheap faux-reclaimed wood with no actual history.

My bathroom was renovated in 2010 with a decorative grey trim around the bathroom. I'm thinking about changing the floor to a mix of grey and brown (stone or stone effect - budget constraints) to try to bring the 2010s grey more into the 2020s.

So glad about this! My home is more transitional. I love my home since I have so many beautiful antique art, antique books, and such. Going completely modern would have been awful for me. My things are too nice to fit a farmhouse decor. I have a beautiful 1890 burl wood curio cabinet, and I did not want to see it go. Try pairing that with reclaimed wood or gray flooring. Not going to happen. I have a few items that I purchased with West Elm that helped modernizes my antique pieces. I'm still not sure if I should replace my Ralf Lauren Bergere Arm Chairs. I don't know how to make them work. I just love your videos!

The all gray look is like living in a black and white photo. It communicates the same feelings. With traditional printing you had toning to improve the archival quality that would pull colors that are warmer like sepia (brown tones) and selenium (purple tones). The pictures that you had of the all gray look would have come much more alive if there was some accent color that was different. Even a pale yellow pillow would just pop with seemingly vibrant color in a room like that. Sometimes I think understanding how you react to the colors used in art can help you understand the palette that would be comfortable to live in. All gray I think would be too depressing, like the regions that see a disproportionately high amount of rain.

Yup! In the UK we have a lot of grey days and a lot of rain... and the grey epidemic is still strong here... along with diamante light fittings etc. But it fading, slowly...
