They both failed to acknowledge that a defining characteristic of a sandwich is that the parts are arranged vertically. So a sandwich is ingredients stacked VERTCALLY between TWO slices of bread that for a VERTICAL top and bottom. Now, the rebuttal to this is "what about the Subway sandwiches that aren't cut all the way?" It is clear the the Subway sandwich is inherently intended to function as if there were two slices of bread in a vertical position. Just as an inherent characteristic of an eye is to see, yet even if an eye looses its vision it is still an eye. The eye is ordered to see even if can not, and so is the Subway sandwich ordered to be two separate pieces of bread. A hotdog is never intended to be held where all the parts are in a vertical position. Thus the connected bun is a necessary component to hold the ingredients together. Therefore a hotdog lacks all the essential traits of a sandwich.

Hahaha, Horn defines by the OED and Fr. Pine turns to Subway and the Summa. Well done. On that note the OED does reference sandwich as “…with a savory or other filling…occasionally with only one slice of bread, as in open sandwich…or with a biscuits, sliced buns, or cake”

This whole time I’m waiting for Peter Dimond to say we should only be eating sandwiches in their originally intended form which is the ice cream sandwich. All the deviations from this original are faulty and shouldn’t even be called sandwiches.

I think I would stick with Trent's definition of a sandwich as a general principle but allow for other foods to appeal to the Pope (or another appropriate Church authority) to receive a special dispensation to grant sandwich-hood status. This way, foods excluded by this definition (such as an open-faced sandwich) could be given sandwich status on a case-by-case basis.

All of this relies on an Aristotelian understanding of metaphysics. The real question is, “Does the item participate in “sandwhichness””. Basic Platonism

A hotdog is NOT a sandwich “an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.” -Oxford Languages. This clearly means that a sandwich must consists of TWO pieces of bread with a filling in between them. A PBJ does indeed contain that, therefore it is a sandwich. On the other hand, a hotdog does not have two pieces of bread and is thus, not a sandwich.

What about “Fr Pine’s” rebuttal that the Oxford definition entails that Subway sandwiches are not sandwiches? And that a hot dog becomes a sandwich if the seam breaks and it becomes two pieces of bun bread?

@@Deuterocomical Yes but “the seam breaking” is an exception to the normal state of the hotdog bun. It has no bearing on the argument which is about the general concept. In addition, the philosopher Matthew Patrick has already classified the Subway “sandwich” as a cake according to its sugar contents and the law. By that definition I agree with Subway not being a sandwich.

Just saw this, so somewhat late to the party, but I submit that condiments don't count towards the sandwich classification, as they are completely optional. Butter is delicious, but not a main ingredient, so buttered toast is not a sandwich. Peanut butter, however, is the star of the show and can stand on its own in a single ingredient sandwich.

Clearly Trent is correct here. It isn't just because buns are a single piece of bread; it's primarily because a hotdog is its own category of meat, and isn't a "sandwich" meat, and hotdog buns are only made for hotdogs, so they don't satisfy the necessary requirements to be "sandwich" bread, unlike foot-long subs which are designed for sandwich meat despite being made from a single piece of bread. Think of it this way: if you asked your wife for a sandwich, and she made you a PB & J "sandwich" between two hotdog buns, even though you have loafs of bread available, you'd beat her and get an annulment and restraining order immediately. Because everyone knows BUNS (both of the hamburger and hotdog variety) are only made for burgers and hotdogs, whereas you need sandwich bread specifically as a necessary precondition to making a real sandwich. It's also because hotdogs are long and skinny, not flat like sandwich meat ought to be (and "ought" implies "can"), so unless you're chopping up the hotdog into little pieces and using sandwich bread to make a beef / pork sandwich, you can't use a hotdog as your main protein for a sandwich in its default form.

3:40 that is poor reasoning. The hotdog bun is by its intended nature one piece. If it somehow breaks that does not change its nature. Just as a living thing is something is autonomous but that doesn't mean you stop being alive when you require a pacemaker to live. Fr. Pine lost this debate.
