This is a little fanvid/montage of Trent from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I think the character is hilarious and I hope he gets some closure in the series finale!
Sorry for the mistakes in the audio, especially in the end scene! I added some last minute scenes and didn't realize it caused an issue until after uploading.

I've seen lots of people say this and honestly, I dunno how anyone could excuse Rebecca's actions. From the beginning of this show I've wondered two things. 1. No one would be okay with this if she was a guy. 2. Why is she surrounded by adults who don't check her crazy and call her out on her criminal behaviour? Paula, a grown woman, even indulged her and helped her do all those things!

@@rushda02 Yeah, I don't get why people say "we" sympathise with her because she's the main character. Like, From episode one I thought we were aware she's mentally unbalanced and does inmoral shit and Paula is an enabler.

Not saying this completely answers your question because it doesn't but I do believe that, although Paula enabled her, there would've been people who believed she was troubled, she just wouldn't have focused on it due to her perspective being biased. It's the same thing with Trent, he displays the truth behind Rebecca's damaging behavior, without the jaded vision of her bias. He displays to the audience how truly troubling obsession is, therefore enlightening us to the true darkness behind Rebecca's perception of reality. We're seeing events through Rebecca's eyes, he's just extra creepy to make more impact lmao. A lot of the time we don't necessarily 'sympathize' with her, she's just our POV character. It also helps us sympathise with Josh a little better.

I found it really interesting that he is just the male version of her. The fact that she is a pretty and charismatic woman helped excuse a lot of her actions in people's eyes. Even though she was even creepier than Trent in a lot of ways. I'm glad the show purposely addressed this with Rebecca and Trent's character. It was all such a well done set up that didn't sacrifice comedy or character development.

Paul Welsh is an amazing actor. He's an objectively handsome man, and yet the way he plays Trent is so creepy and serial killer-like but hilarious at the same time. The scene where he hangs out with Josh, WhiJo and Hector pretending to be "normal" was one of the funniest moments in the show.

I’m glad they added him just to prove how truly creepy Rebecca is because it’s easier to see if he’s a stalker man. I mean like her whole character is brilliantly crafted to make her creepy stalker behavior charming and then shows how there is a realistic reason for her beahvior

I agree! Rebecca being a pretty charismatic female gave her a lot of pass. Trent was a clever wake up call to how creepy her behavior actually was. Plus he's just hilarious.

Not sure if it's just about the gender but also definitely because we know much more about Becca, her background, feelings, motives etc. If we only saw her stalker actions we might just perceive her as being just as creepy as he is.

When Paula assures Rebecca that he’s gone and says he’s in Iowa with his mom, you can’t see it because of the camera focus but you can see the outline of the giant blue turtleneck dress he made Rebecca wear in season 3.

In Valencia’s yoga song, she says Rebecca is afraid of clowns and trains. So is Trent. Yet another proof that Trent is the male version of Rebecca, and his mission is to make us see how it is to be on the receiving end of Rebecca’s actions.

Honestly, Trent was my favorite character by far. Crazy af, but in a weird way, I was totally rooting for him. In some ways, he was the most honest character on the show. Also, I wish they gave him some actual songs. They gave him a few snippets and one brief opening song for an episode he was in... I was like "WOW! He's got an amazing voice." I really wanted to hear more of his singing voice and I wish they had given him a bigger part overall.

I love how they created Trent to show the double standards when it comes to stalking. When a woman does it, its "just a quirky gurl in a love story" and when a man does it he's "a creep"

Rachel Bloom and the other creators of this show are really clever and Trent is a perfect example of that. For the entire first season we see Rebecca doing all this crazy shit to get Josh and it's seen as just quirky antics. But then Trent shows up and does the same stuff and it's creepy. He's a good reality check to remind the audience that while Rebecca may be the protagonist and someone we like, this kind of behavior is not okay. It's creepy and incredibly inappropriate. Her being likable doesn't change that
