WARNING! Ok, I'm going to be another one to chime in and say, You need the window to open up as an Emergency Egress in case of fire. Yes you will need to have an emergency ladder or hook point on the outside to provide a path. As it is, you are concerned about a kid climbing out the window onto the roof, but not concerned about an alternate route if that woodstove or other cause blocks the escape from the stairs. Maybe not a law in Utah but, then again, it may be a requirement.
@tammieaf27122 ай бұрын
Fire escape. That's why you need upstairs windows that open, so you can escape fire. Also so you can get out if snow bank blows up and blocks all your downstairs doors.
@Wdeane19572 ай бұрын
Yes, you can have windows that only open a small amount for fresh air and children cannot climb out of. And they have a lock mechanism that then enables them to be fully opened in an emergency.
@BevDessert2 ай бұрын
You should have a window that opens for Emergency exit especially with the wood burning stove at the bottom of the stairs.
@barbaragraves59082 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Must be code. And also for ventilation.

I agree. Just have a window alarm with it so Trent and Allie will know if someone tries to sneak out.

Suggestion, when you get your deck roof finished you should put heat strips on the roof so the snow will melt as it hits the roof. This will cause the snow falling on the new roof to slide off quicker along with the large amount of snow from the main roof, preventing any possibility of the deck roof collapsing.
@emilygarris19712 ай бұрын
My brother had those when he lived in Connecticut. It was amazing and saved him a lot!!!

Also it is wonderfully healthy to open your windows and have ventilation with cool fresh air. Especially upstairs. A big missed opportunity if you don't put in windows that open. Super important for a fire emergency exit too! By the time your kid is big and strong enough to reach the height to even push the window open you will have been able to teach him and he'll be old enough to understand.

I know it's probably a bit late to suggest this as we're a couple weeks behind and you've probably already fitted the window, but I would seriously consider making that big window an opening one, or at least in part. You can buy security locks to stop children climbing/falling out, but having an opening window means you've got access for cleaning and maintenance, and most importantly, an escape route in the event there's a fire and someone up there can't get downstairs. We built it nice because we built it twice. Don't worry Trent and Allie, we just finished our third remodel on the same house we have lived in for almost 30 years. The 2nd remodel was necessary because a huge hemlock tree fell onto the house in a high wind just before Christmas of 2006. The tree severely damaged the south end of the house. We wound up replacing 14 trusses and 2 gable ends. We then rebuilt the kitchen, the dining room, the living room and then rebuilt the stairs and the laundry room downstairs. We also replaced and moved doors windows and walls. This summer we are now finishing the third remodel of the family room, and bedroom and bathroom downstairs.

The show started in 1961 and ran for 6 seasons. Hearing your comment made me curious about how they made Mr Ed talk, so I found this: As actor Alan Young recounted: "It was initially done by putting a piece of nylon thread in his mouth. But Ed actually learned to move his lips on cue when the trainer touched his hoof. In fact, he soon learned to do it when I stopped talking during a scene! Ed was very smart." Howdy from Oklahoma 🙌🏼👊🏼💕 I just wanted to take a second to complement Allie on the amazing b-roll footage that she gets for us. I have taken so many snapshots of her b-roll to print off & hang as artwork in my home. That shot of the sun was absolutely breathtaking. Bravo, Allie!!!! Okay, now on with the video….

As a great grandmother I remember thinking they must not be planning on kids with those floor level windows

I will be a great grandmother in Oct. I thought the same when they designed and built the house. I thought, What, no room for kids, family, etc in their future?

You should put in two crank out windows to ventilate and get fresh air on nice days. Love watching you work.

Good morning from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr Ed came out January 1961. 🇺🇸

I think its Wonderful you are removing those windows and building the roof over the deck! So much easier and safer for you all in the winter, during the snow wars. Too much snow to deal with!

I remember the opening song. "A horse is a horse of course, of course and no one can talk to the horse of course. That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mr. Ed." Wilbur was his owners name and he talked to him. I'm 67 yo and watched it as a little girl. The beginning of my love of horses. The beams look stunning. Good job!

You kids are so smart to reduce the size of those windows.

24:07 - all windows should open in case you ever have to exit in an emergency. You put an alarm on it to make sure the kids don’t open it.

I was in Jr. High school when Mr. Ed began. January 4, 1961 was the first episode (I looked it up!) and it ended in 1966. It was hilarious! I absolutely loved it then. You must have seen reruns, Trent! I can't believe you were even alive in 1961.......I'm sure you weren't!! Right? (I'll be 80 next year!) And I love your KZbin channel(s). I have learned so much, watching you build, and I love the relationship between you and Allie .......and your grandparents! You do great work, your home, your addition and your garage are going to be beautiful. And I'll be happy when Trent's Garage gets going again, too!! Not to mention that cute little guy, Leo! Praying for a quick and safe delivery for you, Allie, and another happy, healthy little guy who grows up to be just like his dad! Blessings to all of you!

I was wondering if you could take those large windows turn them sideways and use them for the new opening. We used a regular window in our basement window turned sideways and it's worked out fine.
