This pair of Timberland boots were mailed to us for repair. These boots were in very rough shape and definitely needed some love. After an upgraded resole and some thorough cleaning of the uppers, this pair of Timberland boots is good to go. Time for another restoration!

About 15 years ago, I had an old pair of BMW motorcycle boots that had soles I hated. They didn’t grip very well on wet pavement, which is not a good feature when riding a BMW (or any motorcycle). So I went to a cobbler to have them resoled with Vibram soles. I thought it was a simple process, but i remember him telling me that he wanted to replace the midsole with leather to make them last longer and be more comfortable. I whined about the cost, but they ended up being amazing amazing. Those boots lasted 10 years of riding. I actually sold them on eBay because BMW quit making that style, and because of what the cobbler had done, it made them more valuable because it made it easier to replace the soles. Now I know why! Thanks for this episode.

I have a pair of Timbs where the soles delaminated just that that. I took them to a local cobbler and he was able to re-sole with full depth black Vibrams that gave it many more years of wear for them. I've had these Timbs for a total of 26 years so I've been really happy with them and they're still part of my outdoor boot collection.

@@assistantchip723 Depends, the designer brand shoes vary greatly in make and quality from model to model. The better (more expensive) ones can often be decently made, often times blake stitched (the sleek and elegant Italian style models), those can be repaired fairly easily. The cheap ones that have just a one piece rubber sole, they can usually be repaired, if that's worth it or not depends on the insole and footbed construction and the shape of the uppers.

@@assistantchip723 Saint laurent quality is really good imo owning a wyatt harness, and shouldn't be difficult for cobblers to work on. I found that gucci quality and consistency was worse in general more of a "fashion" shoe. Prada in the middle.

MEN, you are mad! I am looking at you from Europe, Romania. For two years from now I am crazy about shoe restoration videos because I paid in my life (the equivalent of)150$ for 2 pairs of shoes, each, in different stages of my life, this bein the top of my budget just because I saw them and absolutely loved the model, but their construction proved to be poor even though their looks were good. So thinking about how and where to restore them, who has the knowledge in Romania and the tools and the expertise and the WILL to try I reached too many channels of shoe restoration, yours beautiful too. Thank you for the quality of your information and I congratulate you on your passion! Been stupid, now I buy superb second-hand or outlet shoes at a fraction of the price I paid a few years ago, all made abroad for ABROAD markets, not for Eastern Europe, and the quality is STRIKINGLY DIFFERENT! And I can now say that even I don't repair them, I am not crying over the loss of the original money. The only 'issue' with this is they don't look like Timberland Classic 6" boots anymore. The profile has changed, the narrow sole and welt the originals come with is low profile and doesn't 'spill' over the edge this much. Key words for reallying cleaning boots..take'em to the car wash, have someone stand in them that don't mind getting wet,and blast them at about 8-12inches away with the same blaster wand you use on your car. Works for 90-95 percent of all stains in my honest experience. Removes some color, but that's not a hard fix.

Being an old plastics chemist, part of what you are doing in the cleaning with acetone is cleaning away a mold-release compound, too. A fella needs to get that off very completely for your new adhesive to get a good bond(grip). I really enjoy watching you two birds fix the "un-fixable". LOL!
