ADELAIDE Trams NOV 2013

Over the last 10 years the Glenelg tramway has been completely renewed, new trams purchased and the line extended through the city. This video, compiled from the Entertainment Centre to Glenelg, will give some idea of the operation today.

That would have been good fun. I had a few ‘sly drives’, the first in 1965. Drivers then were quite ‘understanding’.

Adelaide, like Sydney should never have gotten rid of all its trams. Well Adelaide did have the sense to keep the Glenelg tram system..now they are putting them back in again..if people want to call it light rail verses trams that is up them, but it is good to see trams back again.

True. Now all Adelaide and Sydney has to do is give the trams traffic light priority to speed the service. The Gold Coast line has done it right. This video shows how desperately Adelaide needs it in street running sections.

I drove the H type Trams in Adelaide from 1989 to 1993. Possibly the best time to have because the Restaurant Tram was in the early nineties. So that was a really rare experience. It was a fantastic shift, most drivers hated driving the Restaurant Tram because it was so much heavier you had to go really slow but not too slow because it would bounce badly on the points. I had it perfect and the staff loved my driving. So much that I still got fed after the "owners" had banned the drivers being fed. The main course was a choice of Eye Fillet Steak or Quail with Macadamia and Apricot stuffing. The desert was a Chocolate H type Tram filled with Chocolate Mousse and a Strawberry on top. One night only one person had the Tram car desert so I got three to take home. Happy Days

Sounds like you worked for the Adelaide trams at the right time, just like I did in Melbourne exactly around your times. I also drove our restaurant tram a number of times but I think the generosity extended no further than a bottle of Coke during the Evening dinner trip. So you were really spoilt 😋. That dessert sounds rather delicious. I can’t say that I ever looked at the menu, let alone tasted it.

@@tressteleg1 I have a menu somewhere, well I used to have one. I'd love to have a meal on a Restaurant Tram. I'm actually very disappointed in myself for not taking my girlfriend at the time on the Adelaide Restaurant Tram but I just didn't think about making the memory

@@MartintheTinman I suppose you made the mistake in believing that it would continue to run forever. On one occasion a passenger was my father along with his wife. In not sure where it is now but suspect it may be at the St Kilda museum.

@@tressteleg1 it is at St Kilda. I went there in 2017. I have videos, not very good quality because it was not long after I started doing videos. It's in a sad state externally. I have a playlist for the St Kilda Tramway Museum. You might want to check it out, you can see the restaurant Tram. The interior is dark because I couldn't turn the flash on. I should have stopped and started a new video with the flash on for the interior. I plan on going back to make better videos

Good you took this when you did. You were fortunate you got the H class tram at South TCE as well as the South TCE terminus area is now not in use due to no City Shuttle trams running between West TCE and South TCE. You also caught the great many trams at Glenelg East; Do you know why there were so many? Well Done.

+Adelaide Trains and Trams Thanks. Glad you liked it. I took movie film of the Glenelg line from 1965 which I will post here sooner or later. It includes trams using the former loop at Victoria Square which was replaced in the late 1960s. If you know when it closed, I would be interested to put the date in the video.

+tressteleg1 It was phased out over time between 1967 and 1968 I believe. I may be wrong but I remember seeing that somewhere.

Adelaide Trains and Trams Just luck being in the right place at the right time. Rail photographers should never assume that oddities, like the South Terrace Terminus, will remain forever. So get those photos now. Maybe South Terrace will be used again when the two new branches are running. Things like towing the electric Sets to Dry Creek for servicing should be recorded. While it is good that the government has spent money overhauling those two H cars, it is really sad that they so rarely get out on the rails. As for the 3 trams at the terminus at once, I don’t know why one was parked beyond the platform. Maybe to step in should there be a gap in the service. Maybe it was defective and would rescued later. As for the Citadis having to wait for the Bombardier to depart for the depot after its peak hour run, just a case of bunching.

You should hang onto it. I first visited Adelaide in 1965 and took both slides and movie film. Have a look for ‘Adelaide’s trams from 1965.’
