Looking back, we had no idea, and could never have predicted, the ways in which the Internet would become the de facto medium of communication for the entire planet. There was novelty, there was the gilded hope that tech would unite us, bring all of us together, permitting us to speak at a fraction of the speed of light. What we did not anticipate was the ways in which the world wide web would be abused by bad-faith actors, the way the Internet would become saturated with advertisements, computer viruses, and the oldest venom of all: pure, unadulterated hatred. We took a communications tool and gave everyone equal access, but the savvy, the intelligent, and contemptuous decided to pump it full of bullshit as soon as they got a chance. Social media exacerbated the problem, and it metastasized into the chimera we now face. So it's good to look back sometimes at reminders of the hope before it yielded all to dread.
