So this is actually a combination of two poems from the Eddas: Völuspa and Daradarljód. The lyrics are as follows (keep in mind most letter D’s in the following are actually the Icelandic letter eth and my iphones just not having it today): Völuspa part: Brædr munu berjask ok at bönum verdask, Munu systrungar sifjum spilla; Skelfr Yggdrasil askr standandi, Ymir it aldna tré, en jotunn losnar. Daradarljód part: Vindum vindum, vef darradar Thar er vé vada, vigra manna Látum eigi, líf hans faraz Eigu valkyrjur, vals um kosti. Vitt es orpit Fyr valfalli Vitt es orpit Fyr valfalli Rifs reidisky Rignir blódi!! English translation (to modern English so you don’t have to riddle out meanings) Brothers shall fight and fell one another And sisters sons shall kinship stain; Yggdrasil shakes, and shivers on high The ancient limbs, and the giant is loose; Let us now wind the web of war Where the warriors banners are forging forward Let his life not be taken; Only the Valkyries can choose the slain Blood rains From the cloudy web Blood rains From the cloudy web On the broad loom Of slaughter. Feel free to comment any corrections! My Icelandic and old Norse are not as strong as my Norwegian!
@Kherian43933 жыл бұрын
The translation is pretty accurate. I'd only rephrase the last bit of "Darraðarljóð", but that's mostly personal preference. Old Norse is pretty difficult to translate accurately to modern languages. Even modern Icelandic isn't accurate enough for more than an educated guess in some cases. For anyone reading through the comments looking for information on the poem themselves, I'd add that the first poem, Völuspá, is about Ragnarök; the end of the world. At least the part being sung here is. Völuspá in it's entirety is about both the creation and end of the world, as well as the known history of all in between those events. The second poem, Darraðarljóð, is from Njáls Saga. It's not actually one of the Eddas and is believed by many scholars to have been written in the 12th or 13th centuries, with the author being unknown. The part being sung here depicts a man in the Orkneys named Darraður. He finds 12 women, whom he believes to be Valkyries, who are weaving the fates of men on a loom, made of human skulls and intestines, and is fastened with swords. The women sing the poem "Darraðarljóð", and at the end of it they break the loom and ride on their way. I hope this helps anyone looking for some insight on the song and the lyrics. Also well done again on the translation above Magni.

Fun fact: the newest Wardruna album "Kvitravn" was also Einar's stage name when he drummed for Gorgoroth (and some other session work in the BM scene). Gaahl (former frontman of Gorgoroth) actually helped create Wardruna, and is featured in backing vocals and instrumentation on the first 2 Wardruna albums before parting ways and helping in the background studio-wise for a time. Also, Einar Selvik and Ivar Bjornsson of the band Enslaved were commissioned by the Norwegian government to create music to celebrate the anniversary of Norwegian independence, that work and the Skuggsja project with Ivar has continued along with starting a record label called By Norse, and is equally as awesome.

The black metal connection is deep. Einar (Kvitrafn) and Gaahl were both members of Gorgoroth. They founded Wardruna with Lindy Fay Hella. Einar's music and Wardruna are, well, a bit different from Gorgoroth, but the connection is apparent once you've immersed yourself in black metal for a bit.

To follow up on the request i made for Valravn: I don't think anyone has actually reacted to this band yet, it's one of the bands that started this wave of modern interpretations of scandinavian folk music, atleast i would say, arguable Sorten Muld did it first by mixing folk music and techno, but some of the live performers for Heilung came from this band, including Christopher Juul obviously. They have an album of more traditional folk music, but with very good production and then they have an album that mixes electronica and folk music, and then their third album was original music, i would say anyone of them are very good, the more pure folk music one was their first and therefore the production is not as good as the other two, but still very good. I can recommend either 'Svend i Rosengaard', or 'Fuglar' from their original music. You could also react to 'Kraka' which is the Danish version of the story of Aslaug meeting Ragnar, but honestly any of their music would do.

As your Patreon folks no doubt noted, the opening is from Völuspá. A really beautiful solo performance of it by Einar is the Live at Castlefest Winter Edition from 2016. That simple haunting repeating pattern and the intense emotion he packs into his voice. Check it out.

That was fantastic! I bet that you are going to listen to it a few more times straight through. Love your reaction to it all.

I'm glad you have returned to Einar. He's a personal favourite and I love listening to his music and watching him in interviews. For more Norwegian-related artists, (excluding Aurora because I will always recommend more Aurora as she is just a magical, wonderful creature who makes life better by existing) you should definitely check out Katrine's ethereal vocals in Kalandra, particularly Brave New World from their Kulturkirken Jakob video (which is a beautifully haunting and powerful telling of Huxley's novel) also Virkelighetens Etterklang, particularly their performance from Auerbach, Germany. The song is in Norwegian, so have some lyrics handy, but the song mixed with the setting make for a stunning video. Anywho, ha det bra og tusen takk :) Keep up the great work.

Youre one of the people one can press the like button without hearing a word yet. Always good good videos! Am really curious about your reaction to this. I love this video/song!! Goosebumps within 10secs. I love how he keeps the music simple and he sings this so poeticly. Such a beatiful clear voice. He's a hero! Then when they use their expensive instruments as drums.... crazy!! So awesome. Great reaction as always Mrs. Always great to see you excited about music ❤

I love Einar's music. My fav piece would be "Snake Pit Poetry" I guess. It's the song that got played in Vikings at a certain happening with Ragnar Loðbrok, which I don't want to spoil for people who haven't watched the series :D
@sombraarthur3 жыл бұрын
Come on, Ragnar dying on the snake pit is already spoiled by the music name, and for centuries of history. How much more can people be "spoiled", if what happened is DANISH HISTORY?
@ImFrantic3 жыл бұрын
@@sombraarthur Not everybody who's watching the series knows a thing about danish history. I mean I started watching Vikings not knowing that it was based on historical Events. I only realized later on. And even tho there's "Snake Pit" in the title the lyrics and the tilte itself tell nothing about Ragnar. The lyrics don't even mention a snake pit If I remember correctly ^^
@sombraarthur3 жыл бұрын
@@ImFrantic the whole music does not mention Ragnar either, but we all know how he died, as it is written in the Sagas. So, Snake Pit Poetry is already a dead give away, when you mentioned. Danish (or Viking) history is an even bigger dead give away. The series itself, at its first seasons says on the opening that their characters were based on historical characters and the series is based on historical events.

I love watching your facial reactions to the music. I feel clued into something I don't pick up on, so I start listening harder, and then you go back and explain what we just discovered. It is helpful, and entertaining, and please don't stop. (unless you want to. artists are not machines, after all. thank you for all you give.)

This modern era of video and music which brings a chance that almost any performance is being recorded, somehow has allowed the listener and the viewer a unique opportunity. We are able to experience unique moments in a performers life that they will most likely never experience again. There is no doubt that this is such a moment for Einar as watching the ending you can see it in his expression, and how he almost seems to be coming out of trance as well. Your performance of Marten aller Arten is another example as well, as I believe you said you can only perform in that competition once. I've gotten to experience this as a personal moment a couple times in my life on much smaller scale, but it is something in music and video that when I stubble across it that I am ripped open emotionally in the best way possible.

Einar's skaldic version of "Völuspá" is amazing, just Einar and his harp. As for the lyrics for it, he took various stanzas from the poem. Some from the start, some from the middle and some from the end. He was once asked if he would ever record the entire poem, to which he laughed and said "I would love to! But it's like 66 stanzas, so I'm not sure if I could manage to remember them all." I won't give up hope, but I understand if he never does it :P But I would highly recommend some of the songs off Wardruna's latest album "Kvitravn"!

So happy that you did another Einar Selvik reaction video, this one is my personal favorite from him. Just before Covid hit, I even bought a ticket for Wardruna in the London Royal Festival Hall, which of course got postponed all the way to 2022. During the lockdowns I was always able to watch the channel's Live videos, reactions, and other videos as well. Now that I am working, sadly, I am unable to do this...I can only watch some of Elizabeth's reaction after the fact, less and less time, and I feel bad about it, because I do support this channel, wish I could do more. I haven't even been on Discord for months now... So I poured myself a big glass of Auchentoshan American Oak, with a couple of ice cubes, and I am looking forward to spend some time with Elizabeth's heart warming and awesome reaction video. :)

Thank you for reacting to this! I love every single second of this performance. It gives me chills and makes my chest swell with emotion. Einar's and Tina's passion and energy while performing this are extraordinary. I'm a metal head (Dio!) but this may be the greatest thing I've ever heard. I've loved this song for a while now and it introduced me to the goddess known as Tina Guo!

WOW!!! 🤯 I must say that this blew me away completely. Being of ancestrally Scottish highlander decent on one side of the family and Scandinavian decent on the other, I felt a part of me totally resonated with this song (performance). I had to go back and watch the performance again.....just WOW. A call to arms??? 👀😁 Once again Elizabeth, you have so wowed me with your picks. Love it. Keep up the awesome work you do.

Einar looks so out of character when he sort of smiles at the end LOL! What? Warriors in battle don't smile. Makes it precious. So many different sounds I don't know how you took it all on, Elizabeth, but did a wonderful and engaging job! Powerful piece of music invokes crazy contemporary period-type emotions. Now that I've seen and know you like this, I bet you would love Ramin Djawadi's work, he's done great scores, or maybe even the full score (or parts of) of The Witcher 3 by Marcin Przybyłowicz, the latter has a lot of typical western european folk elements to it. Great reaction as always, love it!!

Einar Selvik's "Snake Pit Poetry (skaldic mode)" really demonstrates his vocal abilities the best. There is little background instrumentation and there are no background vocalists. Hence, it allows you to hear his voice more in isolation. Please do an analysis of that song.

They have so much energy in it, the enjoyment is contagious. :D If you want to go some deeper into folk music (slavic) I can recommend you percival (they did the score for witcher 3 game), the song laboratory or sutari (they are a polish group inspired by Latvian traditional singing) :)
