Thinking about doing this during my winter break from school. Would love to spend a month away from below zero Chicago with likeminded people. Hopefully everything works out!

When you and bill are talking and he mentions that they are looking for people to help. Do you stay there on property? He says they need help or welcome it. I have been in the trades all my life. And a love plants and gardening. How does one become a part of the community for a week or a month? I'm Looking for more knowledge on permaculture. Maybe in trade for maintenance on property? Please let me know your thoughts or anyone else that you know might need help!! Thanks.

it's pretty good. I'd give it three or four stars out of five. They have abundant farm-land at 18 aces and they are completely fenced off from incoming boars which were a problem when I was there. They have a great cast of characters there, a former shop teacher who regularly gives lessons on building, someone working for Doug Graham himself, and a few others who all have unique and wonderful personalities. They also have a really nice set up: water catchment, solar, outdoor showers, outhouses, a lanai, fruit storage, two fridges, washing machine, person huts, a greenhouse, and who knows what they've built now! They also have a good amount of well established fruit trees. i was able to be completely raw my whole 6 months on the island. however, it does have room for improvement. They kinda give you monotonous tasks like cutting cane grass with machete. Also it is hard to harvest from the land because it is pretty random as far as the plotting of fruit trees. There can be quite a bit of internal conflict within the organization but no more than you see at any place you work. I recommend going there if you are into raw foods. Also maybe contact Evan Rock and see where he is at as far as taking on WWOOFers. Keep contact with several farmers in case something goes sour with one. I had to leave Kanekiki over some drama but still somehow managed to leave with a good impression of everyone (go figure) Kanekiki's location ks superb, go swimming in the thermal pools every weekend, it's only a few miles away! they are loving people and try to treat complete strangers like fam. I love every one of them with all my heart and wish them nothing but the best. hope that help homeboy

They use Amdro for fire ants . They might as well let Monsanto set up their headquarters there .

Wikipedia says Amdro is so toxic that it is illegal to use on or around food crops .

yea that's a lot of info ty. I'm sorry to hear you had to leave. what's a lanai and is the Cinderella place a cannabis farm or something?
@TreDogOfficial
@TreDogOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
a lanai is a sort of indoor/outdoor house or room to allows maximum air flow but includes a roof to avoid rainfall no cinderland is not a weed farm but you can smoke there. cinderland is a little eco-village built on the volcanic cinder of Hawaii its like red gravel so they had to be creative to grow food.

why would you need a green house in Hawaii?
@TreDogOfficial
@TreDogOfficial 10 жыл бұрын
There is so much rain in Hawaii (it's the wettest spot on Earth some say), so it's good to have a greenhouse for plants that would otherwise get too much water. Also it keeps pests out so one can grow some more delicate crops.

Kanekiki is not permaculture . Barb , the owner admits she uses toxic pesticides on that land. They lie when they say they're 80/10/10 . Fresh , ripe , raw , and vegan maybe . But not organic. What a disappointment.
@RawTraveler
@RawTraveler 10 жыл бұрын
Barb is not the owner. Amdro is used to control fireants. Amdro is acceptable on organic farms due to the short life of the toxins. 80/10/10 - no comment on that, go and see for yourself.
@milobickmore1501
@milobickmore1501 10 жыл бұрын
If that's true, I stand corrected. On the Amdro container it states that this product is toxic to humans , pets and widlife . I don't use it . I use boric acid and orange oil . Too many, " organic farmers have drunk the Kool Aids . The only thing we can trust the chemical companies to do is to conspire to own all life on earth . Barb said she was one of the owners and she didn't invite me to their community.

Raw Traveler I believe you are mistaken bro . Wikipedia says Amdro cannot be used on food crops . Let's not be bamboozled by the silver tongued con artests that have infiltrated and co -opted the movement.
