Liverpool kicked off their pre-season tour of the United States by beating Real Betis 1-0.
Dominik Szoboszlai's first-half goal ensured the Reds got the Arne Slot era off to the perfect start in winning a mostly scrappy game in Pittsburgh.
But there was plenty to like about the performance, according to Reds reporter David Lynch.

Almost brighton like in playing into thr press during build up, baiting it and then playing a ball out to find space. Might be risky doing that at epl level.

i think quansah , bradley and nyoni stood out . i really like that formation 2-4-4 build up from the back with the 2 number 10s being the outball by finding space in the half space , out of posession the two number 10s elliot and szoboslai (both looked good in this system) leading the pressing with the two wingers staying wide and everyone else going man for man in a kind of 4-2-4 high press looked really good and that turned into a 4-5-1 when they had comfortable posession with salah 1 on 1 out wide right

Thought sepp looked pretty good defensively, not sure the CBS and CMS really understand the quick passing they are supposed to be playing but I presume with Mac coming back he will help that massively

@@denzel1989 Last I checked they play multiple positions and can't remember the last time we played with a 10. Yesterday Slot basically played a 4-2-4 strikerless formation. I don't know if you thought I was saying that they can't play as 10's cause off course they can. Most players are quite versatile Dom started as a CM and Elliot started as a right winger.

I only saw 2nd half , and being a preseason game i don't expect a lot and to me its more of how are the young players developing , and that is what looks very positive. Nyoni the biggest one his vision and passing was very high standard. What was also a positive was when the younger players did come on Real Betis didnt take control of the game we still made the play and controlled the possession . Sepp VDB looked very good at the back , hope he now stays .

Surprised by Blair's game with his back to the goal, people won't talk much about it but it's an extremly difficult role and he was surprisingly really good in it. Kept some good ball under pressure and managed to find players wide quite a few times. Fabinho was never that good technically, that was also his weakness and why he didn't start much for Brazil, he was okay but as soon as he played in smaller spaces, he mostly struggled.

I agree with all of your take-outs David, so thanks for that. I would add - 1. We have a big problem at LB. I think we all knew Kostas has to go, and now Slot knows that. Worse, there is no way Robbo can play this style - his technique and control are just not up to it, and when you add that his defending is already sub-standard, we have a big problem. Beck will maybe be better than both but he is really a squad cover player (to replace Kostas) and is not the elite ball playing LB we need. 2. Van Den Berg - looked very good defensively (dominant in the air, quick and strong on the deck) but again, doubt he has the ball playing technique required for this style. It is now clear (tbh it was clear to me for the past 2 months) that we made a HUGE mistake by not going for Calafiori. He is perfect for this style, and could cover both LCB and LB slots until we get another in next year to go on the left with him. Criminal that we did not even compete for him. I fully appreciate Slot wanted to look at the players, but everyone knew we had a big issue to address in the left with no cover for Virg and no cover for Robbo just as he is beginning to wane. I hope to God we now get Ait Nouri as he would be perfect at LB, but still leaves an issue at LCB. But i guess with Virg we can get by for a while but it is a risk. 3. Endo will not fit. Bajcetic and Morton can both flourish in this but do we need another with more experience to go with Mac as a double pivot (Trent ? Bradley ? Or buy Zubamendi or Ederson ? Then keep Bajc and Morton as great cover options who can develop into the main men in 2-3 years). 4. Nyoni - we cannot let him out on loan. He needs to develop alongside the first team squad and get regular mins as a sub and cup games. He is perfect for this system - we just have to learn from Bajc, Bradley and Gordon and manage him carefully. 5. Mo looks a gonner and we have a real question at RW. Do we just go with youth and put Kaide Gordon and Doake in to challenge and share time with Mo or do we go for a Mo replacement now and let Doak and Gordon cover them ? Can’t really say much about the other positions as all the top boys were missing, other than Ibou will struggle in this system. We should think about raising cash on him whilst he is still highly marketable. Maybe offer him as a swap for Anthony Gordon as they wanted a CB. Gomez can then focus on CB - he has the technique.

Great coverage, Dave. You’re doing an awesome job. Might want to cool it a bit on the Nyoni hype. A couple of seasons ago it was Moton. Then Klopp put him in against Tottenham and he looked out of place. Not Moton’s fault. Klopp should’ve been more careful. Hopefully Nyoni will come good for us in a couple of seasons. I thought Moton looked a lot quicker and stronger than when we last saw him in a red kit.

Yeah, you’re right, definitely don’t want to go over the top with him. He has a lot of tools, but isn’t physically ready in reality. Still think he could sneak a few minutes in the cups this season, though, as the manager seems to really like him, and for good reason.

Sometimes you see a young player and you just know they're good enough to make the grade, I was lucky enough to see Fowler, Owen, Gerrard etc and moment they stepped on pitch you just knew there was a player there. I recall woodburn most recently, he didn't give those vibes. Quansah does, Bradley does, doak I'm 50/50 though all he lacks is game intelligence which can be coached to a point. Keep up good work. And let's keep our kids under wrapsfor now. They have enough pressure from outside sources already. Elliott has those vibes if only he had pace and another 6 inches( I bet his girlfriend says that too😂🤣)

This is really cool, as people said Arne is a mix of Guardiola and others, as long as our players have the teckers to manage we should have a really good team and hopefully they won't get injured as much from the heavy metal aspect of Jurgens era....should be interesting to see. I would give a different opinion on the style of CDM profile. If we're playing from the back, then BOTH pivots need to be ball players as teams will target the weaker ball player.....a bit like the Firmino led press....I dentify and target the weakest/least comfortable on the ball.

It's criminal that Liverpool has not tried to sign a proper DM. This team is crying out for someone like Zubimendi. For some reason, LFC are the only big club that does not take this position seriously. How can you bid 115m for Caicedo one season then get a temporary fix like Endo and then just pretend that you don't have a long-term problem in that role? FSG are making every excuse under the sun not to sign a a world-class DM . Arsenal has got Rice, and City has Rodri both are DM specialist in their prime who only play that role. This situation is pathetic.

I disagree Elite managers don't switch their style ie Klopp and Pep. I hope Slot sticks to his style. Ten hag failed when trying to change his style to suit players instead of getting players to suit his style.
