Trial and Error: Turquoise D20

In this video we have to get creative with polishing turquoise. I have pretty consistent polishing methods for Quartz and other Gemmy materials. But this Turquoise gives me some fits.

the black veins in turquoise is called matrix! for some collectors of turquoise jewelry, the matrix is just as exciting to show off as the blue (or green) of the stone.

It is my favorite part of turquoise. My grandmother has a turquoise pendant with a vein of gold in it the black blue and gold is absolutely gorgeous. I hope one day I can inherit it but hopefully not soon

Beautiful. It’s soooooo soft though. You’re going to need a super soft surface to roll this on. My wife and I play games with Lapis die, and we have to replace them about every 4 months. They get pretty wonky.

This is exactly why I only use die made of 24k diamonds... Anything else is a compromise on longevity.

quartz has a moz harness of 7 so you'd be fine with that material

The softer the stone, the harder it is to polish. But you did a great job troubleshooting it and the result is awesome

Applying your rouge or buffing compound to your larger wheel as it is spinning would have been the conventional way to apply the buffing compound, just as you did with your dremel polishing wheel! love the work!

I expect his wheel doesn't spin fast enough gor that to work... you need enough friction to melt the waxy matrix.

yeah thats the hard thing about ZAM you have to use the friction heat of the pad itself to melt it into the felt.... but if theres no way to push it out of the tube I could see how that may be difficult.

I just LOVE it when you include some of the extra details about the type of stone you're working with. The history and geology and geography make the whole video so much more interesting. As for the polishing... When using a solid polishing compound for metals (swords and knives) or plastics (plexi) you just rub the compound block right into the polishing wheel and let the wheel pick up what it can, like you did with the dremel. The compound being in that tube makes it awkward, but I'd assume you'd still do the same thing, rub the compound block directly on the spinning felt faceting wheel. The final result here, though, was gorgeous, and I kind of like the soft edges :)

As a woodworker if your working with champhers on something that is soft enough to round over with light sanding(or polishing) start with the champhers, then do the faces. Youll likely round the edges a little but when you do the faces they are a much wider flat surface so your more likely to stay flat, which when material is taken off by the edge it should sharpen the edge again, at least a little. Edit, this applies to not just using the polish wheel but any method really, champher first, faces second, helps keep sharp lines. This die looks awesome!

Turquoise is my birthstone and I've never really liked the look of it, but seeing it all polished and with that gold is the first time I've thought it looked pretty and not just a lumpy rock. I actually love gold and green as a color combo, thank you for giving me hope for my birthstone ❤

Beautiful, as always. Loving the faceted edges. Sharp facets are cool of course, but soft lines are too, and they look great on this. I honestly think you should experiment with rounded edges occasionally, even with harder minerals. I think it could work really well.

Love this channel. Ya know what it needs very badly though? The dice actually rolling at the end. Would be fantastic to see them roll, maybe even be very strict about not having extra takes so that the numbers that come up are legitimately what they rolled

I think it's cool how we can see different things in it I really like the veins of black, It reminds me of lightning. A sorcerer wielding black lightning in a clear sky. If the numbers were a shade closer to white it would hint at clouds just a bit more.

You can rub that buffing compound onto paper and polish that way. It’s also a good way to finish dress a knife edge.

It looks great! The softened edges really aren't that noticeable and they're fine for an opaque material anyway. Probably good to help reduce chipping as well. The creamy orange ink fill was a great choice too.

Turquoise is one of my favorite stones. The black matrix is usually iron pyrite in turquoise. I also really like how the sandblasted pink looked with the turquoise numbers at 7:09 - I don't know of any stone with that sort of dark pink coloration, though.

You just gotta push from the bottom of the zam tube to push it out of the top. You figured out an around about way to polish it but it has to be in a pad or polishing wheel turning pretty quick to heat it up for a nice polish. Looks good in the end!
