I remember how gorgeous your hydrangeas were at your previous house. Good luck in this new garden. I'm in zone 8b, coastal southeastern NC. Hydrangeas are proving to be tricky in my garden. A tornado ripped out all my big shade trees and old fashioned hydrangeas. Now that my yard is full sun, I am not finding that the paniculatas do that well. The best looking hydrangeas I have are an original endless summer snd a bloomstruck, both planted in containers right under an older bloodgood maple. In my experience, hydrangeas tolerant the cold better than the heat and hot sun.

Twist n shout and Lovable are so pretty. The reason I prefer the lace caps is based not only due to the outstanding colours and strong stems but the pollinators love them too. I have an interesting variety of dwarf macrophylla that has both lime and rose coloured blooms. Im moving it this spring closer to the border, so it can be seen easier.

I am looking forward to watching how your trial progresses. I’m in zone 7B (southern TN) and it isn’t all that easy to grow macrophyllas here either. So many new ones have come out since Endless Summer and I’m glad you’ll be trying out most (all?) of them so I don’t have to. 😀 I have 6 Endless Summers that I planted last year and was disappointed by their lack of reblooming this year but I hope it’s because they’re still young. I have 2 Blue Jangles I planted under a tree 4 years ago and have not had a single bloom except for the first year they were planted. I decided this year they might not be getting enough sun so I moved them. We’ve had extremely high temps like so many in the US this summer and the Blue Jangles have sunburned, haven’t bloomed, but have at least grown a little this year. It gets kinda frustrating, but I’m determined. I know I’m not alone there! 😂 My old fashioned Nikko blues haven’t bloomed the last couple of years either, but at least with them I know it’s because of late frosts.

Thank you for sharing this information! The book looks to be a great resource. After watching this and a video about hydrangea plant patents from The Impatient Gardener, I've gone down quite the rabbit hole. Here in Rhode Island (zone 6b) I have a Cityline Berlin that has thrived for several years. It was fascinating to learn from you and the patent that the series was developed primarily for the floral industry. In its first year my Pop Star blooms were a lovely blue, but your Ohio soil produces equally beautiful variations. I look forward to seeing the results of your trial.

Hi Matthew 👋 I am so excited to follow this trial with you! I live in zone 9b Texas Gulf Coast, extreme heat and humidity 🥵 I would love a small hydrangea ( not lace cap) Right now our neighbors Big Leaf Mac, had suckered under the fence and had sent up many many individual stems 5 ft tall and are taking over, growing like weeds. (Large Single Blooms on Each stalk) When hurricane 🌀 Beryl hit us it laid it all down, so we cut it all down. And of course it is coming up EVERYWHERE!! 😩 I need help. Hopefully I can learn something. You are the Hydrangea man for the job 😊 Thank you for taking the time and sharing all your knowledge. It is greatly appreciated 🙏

Great job. I too was really impressed with starfield hydrangea. We usually carry more Proven WInner ones but I'm enjoying carrying some of the other branded plants. Did you know Michael Dirr has a youtube channel now though he hasn't posted too often. Great one of his hydrangeas you might want to watch.

This will be fun to watch and see how the hydrangeas do. I bought endless summer original, Twist-N-Shout and pop star lace cap on summer clearance last year while visiting family in Ohio. I planted many endless summer original at my Daughter’s home and took others to my home in south Alabama zone 9a hers wintered over beautifully and all are flowering,one spot may get a little to much sun as there’s some burn, the pop star I repotted into larger pots and took to Alabama, they bloomed the rest of the summer into November, they are doing great in mostly shade this year, love the lace cap. The original didn’t get very large blooms, I kept two and planted in ground we’ll see if they do better by end of summer. The Twist-N-Shout grew huge in a pot in mostly shade but some late sun, it outgrew its large pot so I planted in ground. I’m visiting in Ohio again this summer so hope all my plants and Hydrangeas are doing good. No drip, just the rain and hand watering by family if needed.

I love the video on hydrangias. I have many different types of hydrangia. I live in a zone 5. I bought the original, bloomstruck, let's dance, la dreaming all rebooting hydrangias. They have never bloomed in about 9 years. I have tried many things to get them to bloom. I could use your help 😅

I really enjoyed this video. I retired in 2019 and have gotten more involved in gardening. I have a few hydrangeas and would like more. Especially interested in getting some of mine that were bought as blue have turned pink. Looking forward to following your trial of these hydrangeas. Enjoy your videos and your new gardens. Thanks Matthew, watched it all and still confused about whuch is best for New England weather. I've read and watch many but still don't get.🙄. I have a endless summer blue, lucky if I saw 2 buds and usually always in same spot. I this was the year I was going to dig up but miracle, couldn't believe when I saw all the buds but it was the year for hydrangea. Never saw such vibrant blue on every plant I saw. I also gave one the my mother planted at least 40 years ago, she would chop down every year and they'd return with big blooms. I did that last year and the blooms we are small tnis Year. Don't know the type, white blooms. So with a simple answer which is best for New England, white bloom. I hear like light mention often? Liked your short video with Robbie😊 Thank you

thx for all of the info. appreciate your research. I've not had good luck with Endless Summer brand and retailers do not honor the product. Mine had very poor root ball development. Just my experience.

If the container was not rooted in, that’s on the garden center or retailer and they should take it back. That’s not the fault of the brand. However, I am also not a proponent of plant guaranties either for otherwise healthy plants when sold to the consumer. I’d prefer garden centers don’t offer a warranty and lower the prices of their plants for everyone.

You mentioned that you are going to add the acidifier, but also said that in high ph soil that the hydrangeas can't access the aluminum. Is there something that you will be adding, too, that will help the absorption of the acidifier? Thank you so much for sharing!

The acidifier brings down the pH of the soil so the aluminum (and other minerals) can be accessed.

That was wonderful, you put a lot of work into that. I must tell you that my Eclipse Hydrangeas had a very hard time this (their first) year with our VERY hot humid summer here in Ontario, Canada zone 5. I will be moving one of them for sure out of the direct sun and heat. I am currently looking for some VERY showy all-summer plants or shrubs that can take the full sun and heat in containers in front of my garage all year. Any ideas? They will need to be a zone 3 so I don't have to bring them in for the winter. :)

Zone 3 would be hard. Some paniculata hydrangeas are good down to Zone 3 and could take more sun, but you'd probably have to have the containers on drip twice a day depending on the size of the pot to be able to support them well in full sun.

No. It will change color as all the other macrophyllas that exhibit color change. I do love a hydrangea that takes on that deep purple color though too.

Is it ok to go ahead and prune our hydrangeas in the fall vs spring?

I prune paniculata and arborescens (not the varieties in this video) in late winter so I can see the buds. But, depending on your snow or ice load you can prune them in fall so they don’t break. If you don’t have snow, I’d wait until late winter.

No. Osmocote is slow release, but also releases with heat so as the temperatures drop it will not be releasing fertilizer.
