Trial over Black teen's locs begins in Texas

A trial is getting underway in Texas concerning Darryl George, a Black Texas teenager who was repeatedly suspended from school for refusing to remove his locs. The case will decide if George's hairstyle is protected under the state's new CROWN Act. Cheyanne Mumphrey, national education reporter for the Associated Press, joined CBS News to discuss the case.

There should be no codes anywhere, at work, school or anywhere else that tells another human how they have to wear their hair. Clothes are different, uniforms, gangs and things of this nature comes into play. Hair can actually be a religious practice, and under the freedom of religion act alone, should be enough to wear your hair as you damn well please!

First of all, this title is incorrect; it says a trial over locs (gangsta glasses) and nowhere in this video do I see glasses. I think they meant "locks" as in locks of hair. Second of all, if it is a dress code, it must be adhered to. He and the parents had to have known about it. The standards of 'above the collar, ears and eyes' sounds like a military requirement for males, you know, so they look orderly and not like females. Also, not to be an [insert here]ist, but it states that the dress code says the hair must be well kept and groomed. Trust me, most people - of any color - that go for dreads or locks are notorious for not washing their hair and only having it attended to in a semi or fully professional manner every few weeks/months or so. Bottom line is don't try to make someone else change their long-standing rules or criteria for a fad or to conform to your feelings. Lastly, if you don't like the code, change schools. If you want locks, go for it, but don't expect institutions to change their norms for you -- you're not THAT special.
