A school district in Texas is headed to a trial after they punished a Black high school student over his hair. The school claims that the student's hair style violates the dress code policy, but the family claims that the punishment is a violation of the CROWN act.

He should have sued for discrimination on the basis of male and female dress code standards. The rule has no merit if you allow females to have hair past their ears.

This same school was in court 4 years ago with another Black male student for the same reason. Not for nothing I think that area is mostly white conservative. Guess that's one way to make the people that do not look like them welcomed. Created bs policies that in actuality will only apply to segment of the school population. I do not even have to read to policy to know it's discriminatory. It's just Jim Crow 2.0. If this decision is not challenged successfully then you will see copy cat schools having it built into their policies as well. High standards for yourself would be to focus on education, not your hairstyle. That is the point the school (and others) are trying to make at this point. I'm Native American. I had to cut my hair when entering high school. I cut it because I cared about my education. Who knows. Maybe I should've failed, blamed others, and filed a lawsuit. But something tells me ultimately this mindset isn't a healthy one.

And this is why Asia is crushing the West in education. They are focusing on education with strict adherence to rules (and yes, dress codes) and we are debating violations over a silly hairstyle. Dress codes are to stop discrimination, no? You might think it's too conformist, but they work remarkably well. Someone posted a copy of the school and school district's original dress code in an earlier KZbin video regarding this crazy situation. The school and school district did not have the word length nor the phrase length when let down in their original dress code. After the CROWN Act Law was passed, the school and the school district read it. When they saw that the word length nor the phrase length when let down was not in the new law, they added the phrase length when let down to their dress code in order to circumvent/get around the CROWN Act Law.

Discipline is and should always be part of any educational institution's system. Whether it be hairstyle, dress code, schedule or personal belongings the students bring to the campus. However, there should also be consideration based on individual assessment depending on the severity. Some punishments are not justifiable which could cause long term consequence on the students.

A rather trivial standard a that. I'm hardly much a conformist but both private schools I went to had relatively specific dress codes and rules against having an obnoxious haircut. You'd get two hours after school detention (in which you'd stare at a wall without being allowed to do homework) if you weren't clean-shaven. This part I felt was unreasonable but otherwise I did not resent being made to have a decent haircut. My plight did not make the national news, FYI.

@@senai795 No other race gets as much breaks as we give these people. You treat them like toddlers, and for what? They are grown men who can cut their hair like every other race if they want to be in the institution. No special treatment

Are you aware blacks have been told not to wear their braids or afros at schools, at work, at cheerleading meets, wrestling matches, as flight attendants, as company executives, as college students ext... As slaves they were often told to cover their hair. Back then and today they have been told to submit to Eurocentric beauty standards. They have often been expected to change the texture of their hair because there has always been an opinion of the oppressing class that black hair is not good and is uncivilized. Most black children have afros and braids, it has always been like this. If you consider being targeted as "special treatment" then yes black children get tons of it. I think some people are genuinely confused about the situation of black americans. For example, they'll hear about "diversity initiatives" and they don't realize those are "integration initiatives" put into place because of segregation that ended in the 60's. But certain people will see things like this and call it "giving blacks so many breaks" Another example, the people who seem to be confused will say things like why do blacks have a black entertainment network? Why don't white people get a white entertainment network? Why would it be considered racist one way and not the other way around? It's the same type of thinking. It's fascinating. @@BigFatSeal10
