The Portuguese TrialGP 2nd day in Gouveia dawned with clear skies and the water level in the 7 river sections was slightly lower. On Saturday afternoon the organisers made small changes to five sections so on this day penalties were lower.
The result of the weekend was one of the most beautiful Trials in the last few years, which also brought together the conditions to make the image of this sport closer to its original concept, its tradition and its history, thus bringing it closer to the fans.
Everyone enjoyed Gouveia's sections, technical and classic, that means not easy, but the opposite.
After two consecutive days finishing second behind Toni Bou, Jaime Busto was determined to go for it after scoring the best lap in the day before.
At the halfway point of the day the GasGas rider was second having 12 marks lost, 5 marks behind Bou.
Toni Bou started again making the difference. After two dabs and a maximun in the difficult section 5, he finished the first lap in 7 marks then everything seemed to indicate he would be the winner again. In second lap he kept up the pace but again made a 5, this time in section 7, to repeat the same score and complete the day in 14 marks.
What almost nobody could imagine was that Jaime Busto would be able to close the gap in such an incredible way, as the Spanish rider was having clean in all the sections of the second lap except a dab in section 2...
Meanwhile Gabriel Marcelli was also ready to challenge the two favourites. Loosing 12 marks in the first lap he equalled Busto's score. But the second lap did not start too well, with two threes and a dab to which he then added a 5 in section 9, loosing again 12 marks lost.
But when there were only 3 sections left to go, and Busto was leading by just one mark, water got into his GASGAS carburettor and it started to fail. Nerves were high, the carburettor and air filter had to be cleaned and there was hardly in time.
Once solved the problem, Busto need to ride last 3 sections at full speed to be in time, and also he need to clean it all to win.
That's exactly what he did, concluding the second lap in 1 mark and the day in 13, so he took his second victory in a thrilling finale!!!! Bou was second in 14 and Marcelli third in 24.
Adam Raga finished fourth, followed by Grattarola, Gelabert, Fajardo, Casales and Petrella.
“To be honest it has been quite a long day, we started quite well, very close to the points. I made a rather big mistake in the first section, a very silly one. The second lap was better, to see how it would go and I did a very good lap until section 9 when we had some problems with the bike and water got in, but we solved it in time. I had to ride last three sections super-fast, but I am very happy”.
In TrialGP Women's class, defending title's Emma Bristow felt comfortable after winning on Saturday, and in a terrain that was more familiar to her she was confident to be in front and temper her nerves. She would need to, as the day will be another tight battle with her main contender, Spain's Berta Abellan.
The British Sherco rider was leading with 3 marks lost after the first lap, loosing 2 marks in section 3 and a single dab in section 7, but Abellan was still in the hunt.
If the first lap was tight, the second would be even tighter, repeating a day in which, like the previous one, any slightest mistake would be costly.
Berta did a good first lap adding a 2 and 3 dabs that means 7 marks lost, two more than the British rider. She made up some marks in second lap, but failed lossing 2 marks in section 6.
Meanwhile, the other riders were falling further and further behind the leading duo.
Fight for third place on the podium was tight, but far from the two leading riders. In the end it was someone different from the previous rounds who completed the podium, as Alice Minta, also on Scorpa, finished in 34 marks, two marks behind Italy's Andrea Rabino. The nineteen year old Briton was delighted having her first career podium in this class.
Emma Bristow managed to improve even more loosing only two dabs in second lap, enough to repeat victory in Portugal losing 5 marks for the whole day.
Berta also improved and completed this lap in just 2 marks, to finish the day in 7 on the second step of the podium. Both riders will arrive tied at the top of the overall standings in the next round to be held in Japan.
In Trial2 the podium from Saturday was repeated with Green, Peace and Haga. In Trial3 George Hemingway won again, followed by Jone Sandvick and Alfie Lampkin.
I’m very happy. I did my best, which was the goal today, so I am very happy. Emma did it better. I hope in Japan I could give the last blow and let's see what will happen.”
