so here is the deal. I have been an industrial mechanic for 45 years. In that line of work I use plasma cutters all the time. I own a Hynade hyc50dv and the ONLY problem I have with it, with all my years I can not get it to cut 3/4", I can however cut 7/16-1/2" all the time and that is only at a 50% duty cycle. is it a cheap machine, yes. is it a DIY machine, yes. would I take it to work with me, I do every day.

Thank you for your video; it was good to see the electronics. Was wondering what size breaker was protecting this circuit? Seems like it needs a 45 Amp breaker to power 4.2 KVA input...
@Trialnerror
@Trialnerror Жыл бұрын
Breaker only needs to ne 15 amp. Remember, the cutting amperage is at a much lower voltage so the total wattage is much lower than 40 amp's at 120v

@@Trialnerror I'm not trying to be argumentative, but you can't get more out than you put in. 15 Amps at 120 volts is about 1.8 kva. From the Hynade website, this plasma cutter is 4.2 kva, and they say 40 amp. Many of these import devices stick a NEMA 5-15 plug on the supply cord (probably for cost and legal considerations). It should have a welder plug on it. I haven't seen one of these in person, but I would be surprised if it has a UL label.

I think it would cut through the ¼ if you went slower and kept it from starting and stopping which I think is what caused the thermal protection to trip. It probably gets real hot when it does the high voltage start because it throws so much voltage at once, so it cutting off and back on so many times close together is probably what tripped the thermal protection. You went real slow when you started but sped up and started not cutting all the way through and causing it to start skipping on and off. You did the same in the thin aluminum. Started slow and then got going so fast you lost the arc causing it to skip not cut all the way through and then throw the thermal protection. You are probably accustomed to more powerful plasma cutters and you're trying to move faster then this one will cut. I think you should try this test again and see how it works if you go slow enough. Same aspect with a torch. You wouldn't take a torch and start cutting slow then accelerate faster than it can cut through the metal. You let the torch do the work and move it as it cuts all the way through. The speed you move has to match the way the tools speed of cutting through the material. This is true with all types of cutting tools. I really think it was an unfair test even though it is what it is. I think you went in to the situation thinking it wasn't going to work so you didn't try hard enough to make it work. The first plasma torch you had I'm sure you had to adjust your speed of pulling the torch to the speed it cuts and the thicker the material the slower you need to move it so you had to learn the tool and adjust to it but I'm not sure you took enough time to learn and adjust to this low powered plasma cutter. Just my opinion from what you showed in the video and I still think you should do this test again after you've used this plasma cutter more and learned it better.

I am on a disability pension for a damaged spine. I am a self taught welder and do good work as a hobby. My wife saved up and bought me a Herocut 50 plasma cutter to assist my hobby. It was quite handy and made a difference in my projects. But suspiciously a few days after warranty it stopped working, and will not arc. No support from the manufacturer either. Although the lure of an inexpensive plasma cutter seems great, do yourselves a favor and buy quality that will last. 2 years later, I have almost saved enough for either a Hypertherm or ESAB.

I'm perfectly happy with my Logos 5000D at 1.3x the price. I needed to salvage the metal from a utility pickup bed and at 40A on 240V, it ate 3/8 to 1/2" steel plate dirtily, but it cut through. At 1/8th, it cuts sweetly, and that's my normal thickest project.

I have one of these it cuts like a champ ! Just have to get get some experience with it , need to turn up air pressure some and you are stopping and starting too much ! Makes it cut out on thermal from repeated power surges
@Trialnerror
@Trialnerror Жыл бұрын
I'm not stopping, the machine is stopping. Also, the onboard caps should handle stops and starts which isn't adding thermal load to the IGBT's anyway.
