Is it possible to do this on a slanted driveway? Will the grids hold the gravel even though its at an angle

That's some nice flat gravel. First time I've seen that stuff being installed on KZbin. Never heard of a "spazzle"! Now I want one

I personally think you should be able to see the grid as then you have no stones moving about as they are completely contained. But I can’t see anything wrong with covering the grids, it just might mean a bit of raking from time to time

A neighbor of mine installed a grid system and had crushed gravel used to fill/cover it and now he has weeds growing through it that can't be pulled. He is constantly using spray products to try and make it look better.

I get the odd weed but nothing major and just spray it twice a year. Has he got a weed control membrane beneath the grids?

Yes I can’t see an issue with that
@charlottevanholthe1 Жыл бұрын
What would you recommend on a solid concrete base (which cant be removed) - Can the membrane go straight on top? (For garden furniture area not driveway) Thanks!
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
I’d say you can just put these straight on the concrete. And if you’re straight on concrete, I wouldn’t worry about a membrane.
@Mark-vg9vu Жыл бұрын
Good job. Question, for the sub base and car traffic is your recomendation at the start for the sub base enough to cover the weight of a car e.g will it sink over time? Would a concrete base (although maybe more expensive) be better? Thanks 👍
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
There would be no need to put a concrete base in. It all depends on your ground conditions too so in some instances you may need more sub base. As long as the sub base is compacted in layers and if it’s a new driveway then even put a vibrating roller over the new sub base and it won’t go anywhere. Ensure you have a membrane under the sub base to stop any soil mixing with the stone over time too

how is it now? how do you keep weeds from growing?
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
Still good and it is pretty good for lack of weeds. You have to use weedkiller or pick out the weeds the same as any other gravel driveway though. A lot of it is driven on so that keeps the weeds down a lot but anywhere they spring up I just give them a spray every few months.

Hi nice job. Can you confirm how deep you dug out.
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. It was a new build so was already dug. If this was a new job I’d want to put in 100-150mm of sub base (mot type 1), then use something finer just to get it nice and flat so 25-50mm of 20mm to dust. So including the grid thickness you’d be somewhere between 170mm to 240mm to dig out. This all depends on your ground too, if you already had hardcore down you wouldn’t need so much thickness of new hardcore to go in
@AK-ql8yp Жыл бұрын
Are these good for keeping water out? We have had a new build and I wanted channels but our landscaper wants to gravel grid the sides of the house? A lot of water floods and he stated that this will stop the water sitting etc., I love channels but he states this is more effective
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
These don’t keep water out. They will let water through them (permeable) providing the ground beneath is free draining. I’d say you’d have to put some sort of drain in if it floods, if you used these you could put a land drain pipe below?
@chrisforbes37892 жыл бұрын
How well is it handling weeds after the install?
@SamDaviesBuilder2 жыл бұрын
Not bad, probably about the same as a driveway without the grids really. I just have to spray the odd bit with weed killer but most of what I drive over the weeds don’t come through
@leewagner94211 ай бұрын
How does this compare cost wise to block paving, as the sub-base is pretty much identical, does the grid and the shingle cost as much as blocks ? Was this something you priced and compared.
@SamDaviesBuilder11 ай бұрын
I would say its definitely cheaper than block paving as there is much less labour (grids go down far quicker than paving blocks) and also no need to think about drainage as you would with block paving (as long as you're not on really wet ground). I didn't compare this job to block paving as it would have been too difficult to get falls etc with the paving to get the water away in this scenario.

These user-friendly and durable geocells are perfect for driveways, patios, and gardens. Their easy installation and exceptional stability ensure professional-grade results that can withstand heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions. With long-lasting durability and cost-effectiveness, geocells from companies like Backyard Bases and Geogrid are a must-have for any DIY enthusiast looking to elevate their project.

You can leave the grid exposed or cover with gravel. Also there is different colour grids so you could get something close to the colour of your gravel

How does this system cope with a slope towards the house? Will it retain the gravel or will it start to make its way downwards?
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
What sort of slope are you talking? It would contain stone on a slope as long as it’s not really steep
@dj9048 Жыл бұрын
Difficult to say.... A moderate slope maybe! If the car handbrake was released it would fall back on its own. Really like the idea of a porous drive - could you recommend anything different?
@SamDaviesBuilder Жыл бұрын
@@dj9048 you’d ideally need to find another gravel grid driveway of a similar slope to see if it works but I’d say you could go pretty steep! Another option for a permeable driveway is block paving as you can get a permeable version of that and it works well when it’s done right

29mm deep stabiliser + 2stones(just to hide) covering with 8-12mm gravel on 320m2 takes 23tones of granite gravel, it's mine knowledge.

Would this be a better solution for drainage problems caused by surface water laying on top of gravel?
@SamDaviesBuilder3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it would help with drainage. Only way to stop water sitting on the gravel is to use a permeable base underneath or slope it all so the water can run off

Overcomplicating a very simple job, just chuck some membrane over the soil and dump your gravel on it. Yes it will sink in places then get another ton bag 6mts later and launch it on.
@SamDaviesBuilder2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if this is a joke post but if you did what you said you certainly couldn’t drive over it. You could get away with what you’re saying if it was somewhere you’d only walk on but it would still be terrible. Plus anywhere that sinks you can’t keep topping up with gravel or over time you’d have some stupidly deep gravel!
@levrone00752 жыл бұрын
@@SamDaviesBuilder I did this on my drive where I park 3 cars and yes after about 6mts it needed a top up where the wheels typically go but after that it's been OK and hardly sunk. I can understand when you do it professionally and have to be accountable then yes you have to do everything to ensure it is solid but my basic way has worked very well for a domestic situation
@SamDaviesBuilder2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, you may have got lucky in that your ground is pretty hard to begin with as soil especially when its wet would sink and move like crazy with cars driving over it. But if it works for you and it saved a few £££ then that's good!

It came down to budget, these grids were the cheapest I could find. I’ve not experienced any buckling and we had some pretty hot days last summer! They’ve been great so far and I’ve not had to rake any gravel. Only regret I have is I used 6mm gravel and I’d go for a 10mm next time
@kudamne2 жыл бұрын
Yes dude, mine came with suggestions 8-12mm gravel. And textile was on it hot pressed. No chance to rise up. As well mine was done like that: wall of the grid in bottom wider then on top twice, gravel holds it from rising.
