Thank you so much for this, and for all your training advice. I definitely used to panic during the swim, but in this past race, I was able to stay calm & actually had a great swim. Thanks again!

Thank you for the advice. Our first triathlon is in 2 weeks and the water was to cold to practice open water swim outside (near by in our lake). All will be good.

What exactly can you do while panicking? Lying on your back??

I did slow breaststroke when it happened to me, until my breathing returned to normal. In race briefings they usually suggest lying on your back with an arm raised, so that the safety team can see you.
