When I began riding we had real chamois leather in our shorts. They did need something to soften the ride!! My formula of choice was to use “foot quality lanolin” from Boots (other pharmacies available) with a squirt of drapolene. Worked brilliantly and cost buttons. Sadly it didn’t work for the fabric pad in modern shorts so I hunted about and started using exactly the stuff you have stumbled on. Yes Udder Cream or any neutral emollient cream like Doublebase, Cetraben, E45 etc will work perfectly fine.
@richardjones20067 ай бұрын
Literally, udder cream from an agricultural merchants is the same stuff give ot take and a fraction of the price.
@ysarn7 ай бұрын
Emollient creams are not thick enough for use as a chamois cream, as they get absorbed into the skin. The idea of a chamois cream is that it is not absorbed and forms an anti-friction layer on the surface of the skin. You need a barrier cream for this use. Sudocream and Conotrane (£10 for 500g) are the cheaper options if not using udder cream. The other barrier creams that you get on prescription are silly expensive, such as LBF which is £15 for 100g tube. As a medical thing these are used to stop pressure sores, so are of course the ideal thing for use. I am a dispenser at a pharmacy, so deal with this sort of stuff regularly.
@Quizmate17 ай бұрын
@ysarn Rubbish, professional teams use Doublebase, as do I. There are no issues and works perfectly.
@ysarn7 ай бұрын
@@Quizmate1 Yes, Doublebase is noticeably more slippy and slidey than those other emollient creams mentioned, and is marketed as a gel rather than a cream, so I will agree with you there. Having tried it on my hands as an emollient hated it, as it is so slippy.
@Quizmate17 ай бұрын
@ysarn agreed, it's too slippy for the hands or face I find. It's best used on the torso, arms, and legs, I think. Something like Cetraben is better for the hands and face. Interestingly, a poor fitting pair of shorts / chamois will chaff whatever cream you're using, I think.
@muratmustafa45327 ай бұрын
I recently started using a cream. I found it most useful on rides longer than 1.5 hours or 50 km. So, I do not use it on shorter rides which is 50 % of my rides. That way it last longer. While I agree that it would be beneficial for shorter rides too, it feels so much faffing around for short rides.
@RoissyAngel7 ай бұрын
The danger of buying those large tubs is bacteria growing in the cream. I think you need to be very careful about scooping the cream out of the big tub. Use a clean, dry spoon, move a required blob size to a bowl and then use fingers from bowl to your bits. If you keep sticking your fingers into the big tub you may cause bacteria to flourish and thus find yourself with a different kind of painful skin problem.

@@MarquitoRH Exactly. We are constantly exposed to bacteria and viruses. They fester and grow in the right conditions. I use Arm & Hammer anti-friction stick. Been using it for a long while. That + chamois + proper saddle (not too wide) makes for saddle-sore-free rides. My legs still hate me, but my groin doesn't! Sometimes I don't use the stick. But with the humidity up, I can FEEL "parts" stick to the inside of my legs even before I put on my kit and get on the bike. That's the clue I need that I need to use the anti-friction stick. Will I pay more than a 10lb bucket of udder cream? Sure, but the solid stick isn't messy and sits conveniently on my bathroom sink, so its worth paying for the convenience. But after this video, I'll certainly stay away from cyclist-marketed chamois cream. If I need cream instead of a stick, we still have PLENTY of diaper creme I could use.

IMHO, Check your saddle position. Having to use Chammy cream is usually a sign that: your saddle height is too high; Your saddle is too far backward and your weight is on the front thin part of the saddle ; Saddle tilt is sloping too much downwards or tilting too far upwards; Saddle width too narrow: Cheap Vaselin cream works wonders also!

First I use a lanolin based diaper rash ointment on my crotch and anywhere on my arse that gets rubbed when riding. This creates an antibiotic moisture barrier that lasts and lasts. Rub it in good. Then I use a small amount of chamois cream on the pads of my cycling shorts. This combination hasn’t failed me yet and I ride in 90-100 degree temps here in south Florida. I think you have misunderstood the use of cycling chamois cream. Its purpose is not to reduce friction but to protect your skin from infections. It’s also good to use after the ride. The whole friction thing is something from the past and has been refuted. Jan Ullrich talked about this in a podcast. They used to put a lot of cream on the cycling shorts, but nobody in the peloton does this anymore. So, if you see it as a skin protection cream, you only need one fingertip per long ride.
