Png under Australian administration, life was pretty close to normal. Tribal conflicts were extinguished quickly. Small police stations scattered throughout the highlands kept an eye out for trouble. Riot squad was stationed in the highlands & a backup unit in the capital, port moresby. Back up squad could be deployed at a moment's notice to hot spots. All weapons were seized/destroyed. Those involved were sent to prison to face judgement. Police regularly visited places searching /seizing/destroying confiscated weapons. Locals started to respect law & order, mediation was encouraged. After independence, the png government closed all regional stations, not sure what happened to the riot squad. Png government past/present offer very little to regional areas unfortunately.

I grew up in PNG, there were always conflicts even in the time when I was a boy. But the age old system of payback has escalated and is sad to see. When someone is wronged in my current country, they call the police and there is an investigation, court system etc. I hope someday things improve. Papua New Guinea is a beautiful country

One problem with my people of PNG is that they put family, relative, clan, district and community first than truth and justice. That is why.. no matter what you have done, you will be protected by your people because you part of their identity ... I find that is why our country and people lives are ruined. We should not protect criminal even if its our relatives , let them face law and justice. We should not support them.. PS. NOT all Papua New Guinean are violent people

I teared😢 up way too much in part one …. Lord how can we help stop these killings on babies and little innocent souls labeled”girl” in this culture … omg. So truly saddening and I immediately went to her IG page … found out she’s a life coach. I will follow and eager to learn more about her strength and her life lessons. But still. In the highland of Papua New Guinea, they say blood is thicker than water. So blood matters more. Huge tribal fights are like the domino effect, it's the smallest things that start it. One fight that lasted 5+ years was started by a game of marbles between kids. It's crazy out here. But I love where I'm from and wouldn't change it for anywhere else in the world. 🇵🇬❤🇵🇬❤

@tanda3734
@tanda3734 2 жыл бұрын
@@alecpayne4503 well if you're not black then you definitely have to travel around with a local guide. Who you know is better than what you know. Apart from the capital, the coastal regions are ok. The people are more laid back. The Highlanders are more aggressive. Genetics I guess. So a local guide is important. If you're thinking of going to the highlands, remember. It's cold up there, think Europe late autumn. And don't go to large gatherings. The payback system is huge over there so always keep some cash in you in case you run over someone's dog. And lastly, be prepared to be welcomed with a smile. It's the Melanesian culture of hospitality, not only here but Fiji, Vanuatu and all those. And don't think too much on tribal fights, it's only fought between enemies, they don't include outsiders.

Seems similar to the Philippine Highlands of Luzon a few generations ago. Clan wars, tribal wars. You know what stopped it? Education and conversion provided by Christian missionaries, and a common enemy in the form of the encroaching lowlanders. Of course there are still conflicts here and there, but it's nothing compared to PNG. I don't know what will stop this, but nothing unifies people as much as dying and bleeding for each other against an outside threat.

@@gregorchard7881Christianity teaches us to be meek, humble, chaste, and simple. Just like the saints and martyrs who set an example. But I guess it won't work in the already Christian PNG? Fiji used to be a very violent society. In fact it was known as the cannibal isles. Admittedly it is much smaller, but there are also many similarities as they are both melanesian countries. The widespread introduction of christianity by tongan and fijian missionaries had a big impact in changing attitudes and the culture of violence. European direct mission work was minimal. Strong central leadership was also key. The british working through the council of chiefs (influential chiefs from all around the country) was able to establish and maintain law and order. PNG I admit is much more complex but it is not impossible.

The conflict between tribe have been happened all over the world , but a healthy society will negotiate and keep it as peace as possible.The big scale war is the result of three major things :Agricultural lifestyle adoption (which enables more population =more conflicts, less resources ) Secondly, colonization (which brings foreign culture there , every culture evolved to fit the local way of life ,climate diet , animals predators), colonizer are just bring more conflicts by adding guns and foreign value religion beauty standards etc….(result in low self esteem for locals aboriginal) Thirdly,modernization (electricity,Wi-Fi ) Again , foreign culture , low self esteem) If the cultures are healthy then it will resolve the conflict by negotiating , evacuate. Sadly population grows because of agriculture and cilvilzation less room for hunter gatherer.

Christianity. Education and Modernisation has not changed the people of these parts of Papua New Guinea. It will take a millennia for them to change. This tribal attitude is also taken to the towns. Their educated people need to fix this problem. Many others parts of PNG are peaceful and peace loving and have gone ahead in the 21st century.

Mostly it depends entirely on the law and order system in the country of PNG. LAW and Order is not effective mostly in remote areas of the country and most of the tribal fights are in the remote areas. PNG government must do something now

One group of commentators speaking about ways of mitigating, solving and eliminating tribal/clan warfare in the highlands...but only once did we hear from the people actually involved in the fighting and when we hear from them it was about how now they kill women and children too. The said commentators speaking about how to solve the issue of tribal conflict are able to do so because they are educated. The question then is that of EDUCATION!

PNG people should have been left alone to live their stone age life. The passage from bands and tribes straightforward to a modern day state its an impossible task and the consequences are and will be devastating. They were never not used to hierarchy and kleptocratic bureaucracies to rule over their them. They ever lived in egalitarian societies.
@KeegoonBarnacle

No they warred before contact, and they weren’t entirely egalitarian, considering they were and are agrarians.

@@KeegoonBarnacle Of course they fought between them before the white man contact. Human bands, clans and tribes always were at war with each other but somehow they found ways to survive. The killing power of arrows and bows are nothing compared to a Kalashnikov. They were a tribal society. No rich and poor. No inequalities. No corruption. Their worldview is tribal. The concept of nation that replaced that of a tribe they don't have it. Very interesting experience is going on in PNG anyway that teach us a lot about us, our human species.

Why should we decide if they should have modernity or not, they see modernity and are free to use it or not. Also the wonderful societies that are egalitarian is a moth, also continued war is horrible and the only way to stop that is thru civilization. We learned that lesson in the 20th century, modern weapons made conflict so horrible that modern powerful nations avoid war with one another at all costs.
