Just goes to show how universal and timeless the humor of Laurel and Hardy is.

COUNTY HOSPITAL might be another short that needs some subtitle explanations - inside the hospital room when the doctor comes in. But most of it pantomines just fine.

1971, was in Bangladesh. In a village, but the workers in the jute processing mill used to gather in the club room in the evening. Buster Keaton on TV. The room was in total hysterics. One guy actually banged his head on a coffee table. I have never seen people enjoy comedy more.

The steps that were the filming location for this movie are still there, between Vendome and Descanso Streets in the Silverlake District of East Los Angeles. When you see pictured of the site today (it's a popular tourist attraction) you can still recognize the house on the right at the bottom of the steps. There's a plaque at the bottom of the steps marking them as "The Music Box Steps."

True! It's been many years since I saw them and walked them. The ritzy neighborhood that was once at the top of the hill is now long gone, torn down in the early '70s to make room for more profitable development. By that time though, the old neighborhood had largely fallen into disrepair and poverty. But I love seeing L.A. in it's earlier glory.

I get ya!! To watch these thru their eyes and ears. I had said....somewhere .....in these episodes...I would stay up late and watch these movies when I was small, especially when, say, I was sick. I loved, loved, LOVED Laurel & Hardy!!! Especially Hardy's 'slow burn' to the camera. June/Maine

They reacted just like I do - like anyone with a sense of humor would. And they didn't understand any of the dialog, which doesn't matter because the Boys never told jokes. My dad sat me in front of the TV in the 1950's to watch them; seventy years later I never miss an opportunity.

I had a deaf uncle who enjoyed watching Laurel & Hardy. Sometimes we would visit him and he would have them tuned in on his television, with the picture clear but the audio nothing but static. Even at a very young age, I understood that it would be rude to fiddle with the dial on his tv to try to tune in the audio, so I just sat there and watched them the same way he was watching them, with no audio. It was easy to understand what he liked about them. So much of their comedy is conveyed, not just through physical slapstick, but through a rich language of precise physical gestures.

The instrument is a pianola piano. It can be played like a normal piano, but it plays by itself with those music rolls inserted and a switch flipped. Not all were electric. Many were pumped with the feet.

I love these reactions, and I love how these villagers instantly recognized the "insult" to the great man when his stupid hat was launched down the path. Almost 80 years after Partition, and they still know British deference when they see it...

They would like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” with Steve Martin and John Candy. Needs some basic translation, it doesn’t have to be expert translation as it’s kind of slapstick like this is. It’s a two hour movie though. I laugh all the way through it and I watch all the reactions to it. I’ll bet the writer was inspired by Laurel and Hardy. They would see areas in the USA and funny problems that everyone can relate to even if they have never been on a plane. There’s plenty of taxis and a train! 🤣 you would have to bleep out the one bad word an angry Steve Martin says 18 times to the car rental lady (the movie got an R rating only because of that, otherwise, it’s a very clean movie).
