Gulyás (goulash) is a soup. What they are eating is pörkölt with sour cream on the side. If the sour cream were mixed in, it would be paprikás (paprikasch). 😊

I normally don’t comment but I had to this time. Trillion you are absolutely right. Hungarian gulyas is a soup. That stuff looks like it was trying to be a pörkölt but not even close. Also porkolt would be served with galuska dumplings or potatoes and never with tagliatelle pasta, lol. I’m 1st generation Hungarian and spent many summers there growing up. We only ate Hungarian food. I bet they would have loved the “real thing”. 😊

Generally, Gulyás (Goulash) is served as a stew, not on top of extruded egg noodles. Some households may sometimes serve it on top of a Hungarian pasta that resembles cheese curds called Nokedli. However, it's still usually served in a bowl and the pasta are swimming in the stew. Additionally, it is usually more red in color from the Paprika, and when done right is extremely flavorful

This dish was also adopted by many German Family's that had recently migrated early to the U.S., mostly in the Midwest where it was hot and humid with no refrigeration. It became a very practical way to combine different leftovers before spoiling. Usually macaroni style noodles were added to make it more filling and typically had a tomato or sourcream type gravy as its base. Many other people from other Country's did the same each with their own twist/leftovers. ingredients.

In Indian countries their food is cooked and placed in separate sections of an aluminum camping style plate. Since they use their hands to eat that is how it becomes blended. The idea of mixing it before is strange to them and they are very annoyed with flatware. My Indian fiance and I have had many discussions on table manners. I had to try to explain how hard it would be to eat some of our American foods with fingers.

A well-drained curd can substitute easily for the sour cream. Sour cream is usually less tart than curd, and slightly thicker. I suspect that M. Chaudry would have liked the meat much more if it were served with roti! Being comfortable when eating is part of the enjoyment of the food.

@Kyle Hickey There are a couple of different styles of goulash depending on the region. Some are more like a soup and others are like a stew. The technical name for my version is pörkölt, but I think most non-native Hungarian speakers find it easier to just call it goulash (Gulyás) The recipe I've used for years looks similar to what was served here on top of the noodles, but mine doesn't use sour cream and I make little dumplings, similar to a German spätzle, called Nokedli to serve with it. IMHO, the key to a really good Goulash is the paprika. You really need a good authentic Hungarian paprika or the dish will be pretty bland. My local grocery stores carry sweet, hot and smoked Hungarian versions, so it's not difficult to find, but I don't know if it's something that's easily available where these folks are. I do believe that Amazon carries it as well. Even though it's not a traditional ingredient in the dish, I think if Mr. Chaudhary had mixed the sour cream into the gravy and meat, he would have loved the taste. It would have been similar to a beef stroganoff. Tasting the sour cream on its own kinda ruined the whole dish for him. I also think he was very flustered about how to go about eating it since they're not at all used to long noodles/pasta in their diet. I've mentioned (and so have many other viewers) that the producers really need to show them videos on how to eat with Western utensils. I've even left the information for multiple videos here on KZbin that show you how to do it properly, made especially for cultures that have traditionally eaten with their hands. 🤷🏼‍♀️

American goulash needs to be renamed, there's always confusion.

Sorry for complaining, but is anyone else noticing an annoying distortion noise in these videos recently? 0:00 and 2:18 for example, has been in most recent uploads.

Serving with noodles is done in America....which is delicious. But serving with nokedli is more authentic...these are small dumplings. As long as the Hungarian food is prepared with AUTHENTIC Hungarian paprika spice. Using anything else will never produce the proper and authentic flavor and aroma. There also are many dishes...gulyás....paprikás.....pörkölt....leves which is soup.

This meal is not gulyàs at all. Real gulyàs is a rich slow cooked beef soup with different vegetables. This meal seems to be a type of beef stew with noodles. In Hungary we often eat beef stew with nokedli (little dumplings) as a side dish instead of noodles.

Sorry guys from someone who has travelled in that area many times I can say that is not the traditional way of serving Goulash, it should be served with light and sponge like dumplings - and preferably with a glass of beer. Or it could be served with Spetzle, which is most likely to be done in eastern parts of Germany and in Austria.

Sorrry but it's not a goulash. I'm from Hungary, goulash is or traditional dish. Goulash (gulyás in hungarian) is a soup with a lot of beef meat, paprika and potato. Sorry for my english :)
