We make tomato sandwiches with ripe, flavor filled, juicy "beefsteak" tomatoes in the summer season. Salt and pepper the thickly sliced tomatoes and put a bit of mayonnaise on the bread The choice of bread is important too. the purpose is to enjoy the summer harvest of tomatoes. We also have wonderful heirloom "beefsteak" tomatoes with lots of tomato flavor. It's only good in the summer with the best quality off the vine tomato that you get form your garden or the farmer's market.

My Mother and I loved to eat a tomato and sliced onion and mayo sandwich with black pepper. Also a fried egg and tomato sandwich with mayo. Im 73 and still make these sandwiches during the summer.

I grew up in Illinois eating these sandwiches. I went to school in Texas, and people there ate them, too. Then I moved to Florida, and my first day at my new job, the secretary offered me a "mater sammich". I said I'd give it a try. She explained as she made it that you had to use fresh from the field "maters", sliced nice and thick, soft white bread, and a specific brand of mayonnaise! Salt and pepper the "maters" before putting the top slice of bread on it, cut it in half diagonally - and that's it! She was excited to introduce me to this "Taste of Florida"! I couldn't tell her that I grew up eating these in Illinois! She thought that only people from Florida knew this secret sandwich! I just sat back and enjoyed this "taste of home" that's been part of my life - and the lives of anyone from farming towns (I don't know if city people ate them. Some think that such plane fare is beneath them!) Oh, and my grandmother in Arkansas made them when I was growing up, too. My late husband grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and he had them growing up, too! So, these sandwiches were a quick summer treat, with the warm from the field tomatoes and the cool mayonnaise. It MUST have salt and pepper, and it MUST be made on soft white bread, in the 5 states that I have lived in! I don't know who invented them, or where they were invented - I suspect that anyone who lived anywhere that had fields of tomatoes growing made them as a quick lunch while they were working in the fields. I don't care if you call it a "mater sammich" or a tomato sandwich - it's a summer treat that many think their mother invented when they were kids. But it was good in every state that I had the pleasure of eating it! And NOW you've got me craving a tomato sandwich, and I wish my tomato plants would hurry up and ripen up!

I will have a tomato sandwich when there is no meat in the house. It's an easier meal kids can make on their own. I'm never offended if someone doesn't like something. If all the reactions were only good, then I wouldn't trust them. These people are honest people.

Mayonnaise is made of eggs & oil whipped and whatever spices you like you can flavor it to your taste. Salt & Pepper are usually in a basic mayonnaise.

In my experience as a child my family ate tomato and mayonnaise on untoasted white bread. Usually when we had too many tomatoes from the garden. Never toasted. That is too dry. I could eat 2 0r 3 of them as a light lunch on a hot day. If toasted or grilled it would be a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. Yes, a breakfast sandwich could be an egg and tomato (with or without cheese). Please do not make assumptions about what else we would eat (or not eat) when you are presented with just one simple item. In the summer when the garden produced a lot of cucumbers and tomatoes we made a salad with sliced cucumbers, tomato wedges and sliced onions with salt and pepper and vinegar and oil. From New Jersey, USA where the best tomatoes are grown.

Tomato sandwiches are eaten and loved all over the US. Many people have vegetable gardens at their homes and when the tomatoes are ready and ripe, it's very common for people to go out to their garden and pick the biggest, most ripe tomato, bring it in the house and make the "first tomato sandwich of Summer". Of course you can eat a tomato sandwich any time of year, but it's at it's absolute best when you have tomatoes that you just picked off the vine from your own garden. I guess you could call it a "rite of Summer", especially in the parts of the US where we have long, freezing cold Winters. It's like a symbol the cold snowy weather is over and the warm sunny days are here again. The most basic tomato sandwich will be made with thick slices of juicy tomato, mayonnaise and a little salt (some like a sprinklimg of pepper too) and it's made on slices of white sandwich bread that is usually not toasted. I suppose that some people toast their bread, but it's really just personal preference. I think that people outside of the US just assume is that we are the land of excess, as though everything is extra this and extra that... the more ingredients the better. But, that's simply not true. We also love very simple things, including food. There is another sandwich that is eaten with those fresh garden tomatoes. It's called a BLT, which stands for Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato. I know that you don't eat pork, but beef bacon or a good quality turkey bacon that's fried up nice and crispy can be just as good. You would make it in a similar way to the sandwich you served today. Thick slices of fresh tomato, some fresh cool lettuce and a couple of slices of crispy bacon on buttered toast with mayonnaise, salt and black pepper. It's also considered a rite of Summer when you have freshly picked garden tomatoes, but it's such a popular sandwich that it is eaten all year round in the US. I didn't get a chance to comment on the party/celebration video, but I wanted to say a very happy and blessed birthday to little sister, Fiza! I hope that all of her wishes and dreams come true. And happy birthday to you, as well! You're such a wonderful brother, Azeem! You're always thinking of and doing the best that you can, for Fiza and for your whole family! I love tomato sandwiches with butter, salt,and pepper. From all I've been taught, tomatoes are very health beneficial, only if you eat too many tomato dishes, they can cause mouth ulcers from the natural acids, otherwise, completely healthy.

Actually the pork sandwich I mentioned is a pork tenderloin, coated in a "secret" breading and served on a bun with mustard and onions. Hope you enjoyed your time in Montana and tried one of the pasties too.

I am from Montana. This is probably eaten in some homes, but not anything you would order in a restaurant. Now if you want a truly Montana sandwich you get a breaded Pork sandwich!!!!!

I have been to Montana; I would have chosen Bison myself. It's sad that, of all the different choices of meat available in Montana, you would choose pork as your "Montana sandwich". Not very original considering 4 other states also have pork as their state sandwich and they sound much better (pork tenderloin sandwich, Kalua Pork Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich) than the "Montana Pork Chop Sandwich" lol

we have these because we have too many tomatoes in the garden and want to do something with them. store bought tomatoes are not good for this. if we put a fried egg in it, it would be an egg sandwich, with a different set of ingredients. i would guess only 1 in 4 americans likes a tomato sandwich.

I like to put a slice of onion and an egg on my tomato sandwiches. But I always have more tomato than that in my sandwich. And has to be enough tomato that the juice runs out when you bite it. And I like to put a sake of hot sauce on my tomato sandwich as well. The sandwich you are feeding them is the most basic of tomato sandwiches. I heard pepper mentioned, but it doesn't sound like any salt was on it. That would have made even this simple sandwich taste better.

Yes, making a tomato sandwich out of grilled Tomatoes is an excellent idea! And yes actually, the skins on tomatoes do contain anti-nutrients and are inflammatory and difficult to digest.

TBH, as an American, that's a super basic, super boring sandwich... I don't really get what the big deal is. I'd rather have an actual deli sandwich with meat, lettuce, cheese, maybe some mustard, **AND** tomatoes/mayonnaise. Not really sure why someone would prefer a sandwich with **just** tomatoes & mayonnaise. Super boring to me... I know some people like it... I just don't get it, personally. Unless you're just like super poor or vegetarian, or something. Just seems like there are such better sandwiches out there.

Really needs vine-ripened tomatoes at the peak of tomato season. Good bread that has enough body to hold up to the copious tomato juice that will ooze out once you've salted and peppered everything. (I splurge on bakery Italian boule or country loaf [because you can't find the right bread in the grocery store like you could when I was a kid, and I only consume bread during tomato season anyway], and use Kosher salt and freshly ground/cracked black pepper to season both the tomatoes and the mayo.) Plenty of mayo (a ridiculous amount, really) on both sides of the bread, to mix with the juice and seasonings, which all together carry the flavor. (I only consume mayo during tomato season as well.) Maybe a slice of cheese if you must (a good quality deluxe yellow or white American, not the plastic-wrapped faux cheese singles-type). The success of this sandwich is all about using quality ingredients --- simple ingredients, in the right proportions, together becoming much more than the sum of their parts. Sublime, if done right.
