I bought this bike as my commuter and I love it! Sometimes I'll prefer to take it out for a long ride over my "good" bike. Added bonus for me is the RC logo is my initials 😁. Another great benefit of this bike worth mentioning is the wide tyre clearance, which mean you can also use it as a gravel bike if you so wish.

I bought one last week. Ridden around 100 miles on it (mostly in the rain!). Smooth gear changes and excellent comfort (28mm tyres really help). Disc brakes make such a difference to my confidence on corners in the wet. Great winter bike.

Hi Roy, just want to thank you for your fabulous channel. I’m 60 and a keen ( some might say obsessive!) cyclist. I came off my road bike and broke my hip 2 years ago and swore no more lightweight sports bikes but I’ve been back on my Surly LHT for a while and I wanted something a bit quicker but not too light and twitchy (pot holes are horrendous!). Anyway, yesterday I watched your video and I bought an RC520 a few hours later ( I couldn’t find an RS520 anywhere!!😂😂). I’ve just been on my first ride and I can’t wipe the smile off my face!! Thank you for your consistently classy videos. I’ve subscribed, and bought one the tyre removal tools. Wonderful channel; thank you!! 🚲

Thank you very much for your video! I am new to road bike and I am seeking for one to enter the bicycle world and this video really helps a lot! I guess somewhat people afraid buying less popular brand like Triban compare to those well-known ones like Giant and Canyon, and there are much less people willing to talk about bike from less popular brands as well. I guess because Triban seems not professional and they scared being compared among their peers. There is another concern of whether the quality of the bike is good enough for this price point and from a less popular brand. As you said in the beginning of the video, you had a very high-end bike before but you eventually sold it. At the end of the day, what really matters is a bike decent enough to give you a pleasant ride: whether the size and geometry fits, and the components are really working in a good condition. People chasing for lightness of the bike for few hundred grams but never chasing for reducing their weight in kilograms, they chase for very speedy and aerodynamic design but never went on a race. I can imagine that chasing for high-end gears give a sense of proud and gratification, but this endless desire would never be satisfied as they will always be much better parts in the world. A poor bike will perform hugely different from a mid-range bike, but by then the difference in further upgrade will be small for amateur except the weight. I guess having a chance to had a high-end bike is great, but after all a decent enough bike like RC520 will be the one for a daily ride. At least you won't be sad if it is somewhat being clashed by others. Greetings from Hong Kong. And thanks for your review again!

Thank you Chris. I agree with all you said. There are many wannabes in cycling who think that the best gear will make them a great cyclist. It reminds me of when I played golf. I bought the top of the range Ping clubs and guess what? The ball did go further, but still in the wrong direction😂. The Triban RC520 may not be a ‘cool’ brand, but it rides really well. Just yesterday I rode 114 miles (184km) and was comfortable throughout. Thanks again for your comment and glad I am reaching Hong Kong

I enjoyed watching your video Roy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. A lot of people complained that it is near impossible to replace the tyres with non-decathlon tyres, how did you find the change to Gatorskin? BTW I got the Van Rysel 105 with the same bar tape, I had to replace them with Cinelli Chubby, made a massive difference!
@RideWithRoy

Thanks, Mohammed, much appreciated. The Gatorskins were awful to fit, but then they always are, no matter which wheels I’ve fitted them to, so just assumed it was the tyres. I use plenty of washing up liquid and also stretch them a bit before fitting. I also have plenty of plasters ready for the inevitable cut knuckles🤕😀 I find the bar tape comfortable but I’ll bear in mind your experience and try the Chubby if I change. 👍

@@RideWithRoy On the other hand I spent all my time (went for a ride last night) in the small ring :-) In my defense I did attempt to change into the big one but it wasn't having it. They changed great on the rear cassete tho. I have ordered a bigger cassete (11-40) to... just hoping the bigger jumps won't spoil the ride. Going from flat bars I found the drop bars awkward and uncomfortable (got neck ache to) I guess I just need to get used to them (and maybe strengthen my neck muscles!). I have ordered another bar (RedShift kitchen sink) so am hoping to find that more comfortable. On a side note I can confirm that Otter waterproof socks really are waterproof (note to self: when a road side signs 'road closed' ... 'flooding' take heed!).

I returned the bike and asked money refund. I want it that bike but Decathlon unfortunately could not help me. I liked the bike it is fast and nervous with acceleration despite many Pros said that it is slow and heavy, I didn't . I will try to buy it next year 2022 maybe they will be better made.

Hi Roy. Back in the good ol’ days, as a teenager, I used to cycle competitively in TTs and road racing and my life revolved around the club runs, then I gave up🤦‍♂️ Now, at the ripe old age of 41😉, I want to get back into it. I’m overweight and I have some old injuries, so I’m thinking about a relaxed geometry and a construction that’s good for the trails, I live in France now, so the motorists are more patient than in the UK, but the death rate tells me to enjoy the trails. I want a steel or alu frame, yet every time I discover an appealing bike, there’s at least months of wait ahead! I’d love a Genesis CdF, but no luck, I’ve looked at various other bikes, all to no avail, then I saw your review on the Triban, then I saw that I can’t have that, either. Thanks for the review, Roy. I’ve subscribed, but if it continues like this, I might have to cycle vicariously through you!

I can get a RC520 for less than what Trek sells Domane AL3 disc for which only has Sora components, while the RC500 is much cheaper. So it all comes up to whether I'll want the 105 on RC520 or Sora on RC500. Your video definitely helped me get rid of Trek from my head for good! Is there a huge difference between the ride quality of Sora vs 105? Hello Stoney, thanks for the comment. When you look closely the 120 is a hugely lower spec than the 520, although still looks great value. I saw in one of your other videos that you participated in some races in the past. While I am, at most, an amateur and mostly use my bike for shorter workouts and touring, I was wondering whether the RC520 is an acceptable choice if I want to dabble in some amateur races in the future or whether its geometry is too far on the comfy side for sustained fast riding?

Thanks, Max, your comments are really appreciated. I must make clear that my events were not races, but sportives. As to the suitability for racing, I would think that the Triban would be too heavy for racing, as most of your competition would probably be on lightweight Carbon bikes. However, I am sure someone will be along to say they have been successful on a Triban in races. I guess it comes down to whether you want to do well in a race or just participate. I used to have a light and fast carbon bike but I still wouldn’t have been fast enough for racing.

The bead just wouldn’t release, which may have been made more difficult due to the rim being tubeless ready. As you will see, I invested in a ‘tyre key’ which did the trick and I can carry with me. With one of these, you can avoid the cost of your LBS fitting them and have a means of dealing with a puncture. For info, I have 28mm tyres which run great on road and help a bit on tracks.

Some questions. This is a gravel bike, right? What size fits best for a 5'7" height? And would you recommend this over the Giant Revolt 1 2021? My brother plans on getting the Revolt but will have to wait til Dec, or March next year. Price of the Triban RC520 is now almost 1500 cad compared to Revolt's almost 1900cad. Lastly, how are the wheels on this RC520? Coz i read some complaints about it.
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not sold as a gravel spec but the addition of up to 37mm tyres (unofficially it will take 38mm) turns it into a very capable one that handles tracks and trails beautifully. I had a look at the Giant spec you mention and I note that they are using the Shimano Tiagra groupset. This is a good performer but one level down from the Shimano 105 fitted to the Triban. The Giant has flared bars but these are a cheap enough upgrade if required. If I had to make that decision, I would go for the Triban and use the saving to buy the Redshift seatpost I have just reviewed here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GsZpdsZp2ZjbM It makes riding the trails a whole different experience and I find I am much less tired on rough rides. As for the wheels, I did have problems and accused Decathlon of supplying oversized wheels. They invited me to measure them. I did and have to say they are standard. I think the issue is that they are tubeless ready. They seem to grip the bead much tighter than my other wheels and it makes removal harder. However, they advised that fitting folding tyres makes all the difference. If you watch my updated video on the Triban kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJCVl6KciNCCb80 you will hear my views after using the bike for a lot of miles and also see me riding it on some rough surfaces. I hope this helps but feel free to come back if you need any other info.

Hello Richard, and happy upcoming birthday. I can only speak for myself, but I would max out on the 520. You then will start with a great spec that won't need upgrading. The accessories can then follow as you can afford them. I always like to buy the best I can afford. Perhaps you can suggest that others buy some accessories for your birthday? I think the only problem you may have at the moment is getting hold of a bike, as they seem in short supply. Good luck whichever way you go and enjoy your riding.

@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 2 жыл бұрын
It must be getting on for three years old now, Scott. The simple answer is that’s it’s faultless. I now keep this as my winter bike, comp,etc with mudguards, so it will be dusted off soon. The weakness is the wheels and I’ve now changed these to avoid the drama of repairing a puncture on the road. Having said this, the wheels are tubeless ready so, with the benefit of hindsight, I would have avoided that issue by going tubeless. I’ve also changed the cassette to an 11/34. There was no problem with the Microshift 11/32 but I wanted some help on the 12% climbs around here. My verdict: I would have no hesitation recommending the Triban RC520 and I doubt there is anything comparable spec for spec. Good luck with whatever you go for.

Is the Triban classed as an Endurance bike? Whats the geometry like compared to your Ribble? (Relaxed or more aggressive/aero?) These do look good. GCN did a piece on Triban a while back and they liked them too. Thanks :)
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Sharon. The geometry is similar to the Ribble and is ideal for long distances. As said in the review, I rode this for 150 miles, loaded with a day’s supplies in a rack and bag, and was comfortable all day. For information, I’m approaching 68 and am not as supple as I used to be, so I need comfort over aero. One of Road CC’s views stated the relaxed geometry as Con, as it my not suit everybody. For me it’s definitely a Pro. Having said this, it’s a personal thing, so Decathlon will let you try the bike - riding it around the store. Not the same as a road test but will allow you to try the geometry. I have my stem turned over and all spacers in to give me a more relaxed position. Another feature of this bike is that you can go up to 38mm tyres to make it a gravel spec. I hope that helps.

@@RideWithRoy Thank you Roy. Depending on how my work situation is for the next few months, will dictate budget for a new bike. Ribble if I can afford it, but good to know there are alternatives out there. Someone on a forum said this bike was great for bike packing and loved hers. Like you suggested, she'd upgraded to wider tyres as the frame allowed it, and now she rides in comfort. Personally, coming from riding a hybrid, (and approaching 50), I would prefer a more relaxed riding position so what you've described sounds perfect. Thanks again for the advice. Safe riding! 👍🏻

Considering that there are 3000-euro eBikes offering Tiagra, 105 on this bike is a bit of a jaw-dropper. And swapping the cassette for a pukka 105 one would be a trivial expense. Unfortunately, I haven't an excuse for buying one.

@@RideWithRoy 38mm is my favorite tire width too! A great compromise between on-road/pavement and trails. As for using smaller wheels and 35mm tire, it means that your BB height (and thus crank spindle) will be lowered. Beware of pedal strike - I had that problem with one of my bike and had to put in a slightly thicker tire to prevent that issue.

@@BlackJacketWasp that’s interesting, thanks. I let you know how it goes as I’ll be fitting them this weekend. I guess I could also remedy this with a shorter crank arm? @RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
No, certainly not true. I don’t know what the residue is in the video but it’s not glue. Maybe it’s some kind of lube they use to fit the tyres. The reason for them being hard to remove is the tubeless system gripping the bead, which I assume is tight to prevent air loss. I got the original ones off fairly easily but the subsequent Gatorskins seems like they were welded on when I tried to remove them. The Marathons I now have on come off easily, so probably down to the type of bead a tyre uses.

@@bushgreen260 thanks for that link. I use all the same techniques (but much faster😀) and still spent a cold and miserable hour at the roadside just trying to remove the Gatorskin. I had a highly skilled bike mechanic with me and even he was beaten. I’ve discussed this with a Decathlon service advisor and he recommends folding tyres as a replacement. As a test I tried one I already had and it went on as easily as in the video, although I used levers. I gave the original non folding tyres to a friend and they seemed quite loose on his rims, which is probably why he got them on so easily. So I think it’s down to tyre type and make really.
