A tip for putting on new tires. Use soapy water EDIT: Liquid soap worked better for me. for beads and rims. Inflate the wheel above the maximum pressure (half a bar or more) and then reduce the pressure to the optimum inflation. As a result, the tire will be equally seated throughout the rim and will not ripple from side to side, up and down.

If anybody is interested - I have fitted 650b wheels on my Triban RC500 with 45mm tyres and they are great. They are Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M tyres. (I originally tried 650x47 tyres but these were too big).

What 650b wheels do you have? I'm especially interested about width of your rims because 45mm tires are ok on 17c but maybe not on 19c, 21c, etc. I'd like to go for 42mm on 650b.

Thank you "The Sweetest Cyclist" for this video and showing us what size tires we can put on a Triban RC 520! I really appreciate it! I just got my bike yesterday and I haven't ridden it yet. It was too cold for us here in Florida...haha! I was actually looking at videos on KZbin about upgrading to a wider tire on any bike and I was surprised to find your video and it was for the Triban RC 520. I didn't know before if I could put bigger tires onto the same rim. I thought I might have to buy the rims to do it. I am so happy you put together this video and showed us we could put bigger tires on the stock wheels. My last bike was a Schwinn Varsity 1250 that I paid about $200 and I rode it for over 26,000 miles in the last 6 years. It has 36 mm tires on it. I've hit sugar sand a few times before and thought I was going to eat it. I am not too fond of the 28s that come with the Triban but, I bought the bike because I read that I could put on wider tires. I did ride my new Triban RC 520 yesterday just in front of my house and I didn't feel stable on it at all. It's going to take me some time to get used to it. First off, where the brakes are. I had flat handle bars before and the brake levers were right there. In the 80's I rode a Benoto Bike with the hand brakes below and on top. I was looking for the top ones yesterday from old habits. The brakes didn't seem they stopped the bike too well. I am not sure if I have to adjust them or if they have to be broken in. My Schwinn rim brakes stop the bike better than the Triban it seemed. I can see the Triban is going to give me more Aero for sure so, I am happy about that. I am looking forward to my next headwind challenge to see if it does! Thank you so much for the video! I did subscribe to your channel and I will take a look at your upcoming and other videos later! Happy Trails!

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad the video could help. It was a question a lot of people had asked after our initial RC520 review. If you've been riding flat handlebars for a long time, transitioning to drop bars can be a bit of a challenge but it is definitely worth it in the end.

An issue that can occur is during a ride when it's raining, on off-roads paths with mud and leaves, it can get stuck easily ! NOt enough clearance for them to get away by themselves. Another problem is the size of your shoes haha, if you are a Size 45EU, you will touch the front tire while riding. Above 36 is suitable for Spring/Summer rides, but during Autumn/Winter in Belgium, it rains a lot with a great amount of mud and leaves on the roads.

i would be careful with the 40c tires. Even if it fits while stationary, once you get a small pebble or in muddy conditions then you wont have much space and can lead to accidents. Unless you are ridding in perfect conditions or on flat paved roads, you might wanna rethink the 40c
@TheSweetCyclists

We agree, the tires fit and ride well but don't allow for much space for mud/debris. If you've ever broken a spoke on a ride you'll know that having a little extra clearance for "wobbling" means you can at least make it back home.

Hi! Appreciate the video, since there is not that much on youtube on the RC520. Quick question - what size inner tubes did you use for the 38' tires? Would it be okay to use the stock inner tubes?
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Inner tubes are actually rated for different sizes, so if you do go wider you might need wider inner tubes. I can't recall what the stock inner tubes are, but they are typically 18-25mm. That said, you can still run the more narrow tubes on the wider tires but they will be more prone to flats as they will be stretched out more.

I did in this video, but for the really wide 700x40 tires or wider you'll want a tube that is rated to fill that large of a tire. The allowable tire size range is usually printed on the inner tube - you don't want to push it too far beyond that range.

We haven't tried it with a mudguard or rack, but as long as you get a rack that is designed for that tire width you shouldn't have an issue. The mounting spots for the racks/mudguards are on the outsides of the seat stays so positioning shouldn't be an issue.

You don't have to replace the wheelset/inner tube - but using a larger inner tube designed for 700x35 tires is recommended (the stock one fits but it is more stretched out on the larger tire). Upgrading the wheelset to something with a wider inner tire will give you better performance and reduce chances of flats though but that's something you can do if you get more serious about gravel/off road riding.

Everything in the video is showing the stock wheelset, you don't need to change it. I wouldn't recommend the 700x40 on the stock wheels (the inner rim width is narrow for that wide of a tire), but for a 700x35 or 700x36 tire it is isn't a problem. I believe the Triban wheels are the same one found on the RC 520 Gravel version Decathlon sells. If you want to do some road cycling, I would recommend upgrading the wheelset down the line though. I've swapped in some Mavic Ksyrium Pro Disc wheels I picked up second hand for ~$330 and it's helped a lot - they are lighter so they spin up faster.

Most of the Hutchinson tires are 'Tubeless Ready' and can also be run tubeless. I wouldn't expect the overall tire clearance issue to change though as the tires will fit the same way. @TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 3 жыл бұрын
Look like I didn't include the riding footage with the 700x35 in the video, but they fit great and rode well. The more narrow tire gives you slightly less performance off-road than 700x38/40, but as you said it's a great balance between performance and lightweight. Decathlon ships the 'gravel' version of the RC520 with the same Hutchinson Overide 700x35 tires. It's a big upgrade over the stock Triban tires off road.

Nice video. I have Triban RC 120 which comes with a 700x28c. The rim is meant to be 15mm with and the maximum tyre for the stock wheel is a 700x32c I am in the process of getting 700x32c Continental 4 seasons tyres as the Hutchinson 28c are crap and i don't want a puncture sooner than expected. If i have to go for a 700x35c, I've read that i will need a wheel with a minimum of 17mm to accommodate a 35c-38c. What reasonable priced wheel would you recommend to go to a 35c-38c I look forward to hearing your feedback please

I didn't realize the RC 120 had different wheels - are you sure about that? The Decathlon page lists the RC 120 as having "Triban Tubeless ready* wheels 6061T6 aluminum ETRTO dimensions: 622 x 17 C 28 mm" wheels - do you maybe have an older version? If it is different and is 622x15 then yes - the general advice is not to exceed 700x32 tires (there is a nice chart on www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html for reference). I actually just swapped out the stock wheels for a set of used Mavic disc wheels. Highly recommend them - installing tires is lot easier and they are lighter than the stock wheels. The Mavic Askium disc wheels are more affordable while the Mavic Ksyrium disc wheelsets are a bit light and more expensive. If you check your local eBay / Craigslist you should be able to pick one up for a fraction of new price.

whats your recommended tire pressure when using 700x40 tires to be used on gravel? thanks!
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 3 жыл бұрын
That is a controversial question to ask. There are a lot of different theories on the ideal tire pressure. I would start by starting with ~10 psi less than the max tire pressure for the tire you use. The lower pressure you go - the more grip off road but softer ride (if you go too low, you will ride on the rim itself). Higher pressure means stiffer but faster on pavement. I believe many people air them down for off-road, then pump them up for commuting/hard roads.

The stock wheels are quiet difficult to mount tires on, it's one downside. The Hutchinson tires installed easily the first time, but re-installation required using a tire seater tool (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXrJmnmLiLJqiNE) to get the side walls to mount correctly (they would dip down). It's a standard sized wheel, so most 700x28-40 tires will fit it's just that the rims are deep inner rim profile which makes it difficult for the beads to sit properly. With some patience the tires fit though.

Yea, it took about ~30 minutes just to take off the stock tires for me (they seemed to be glued on from factory). Getting a wider tire like the 700x35 should make installation easier, but you might have to spend extra time getting the sidewalls to seat properly (you can still ride it but it will be a bumpy ride). We've swapped the stock Triban wheels for a set of Mavics we picked up used for ~$300. It's a good upgrade to do as the stock Triban wheels/tires are a very heavy combination.

It depends on the inner width of your wheels. I'd recommend checking out Sheldon's tire size chart - www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html. If you have 700x23 tires right now that might mean your wheels are a 622x15 (15mm inner width) which means 700x35 is possible but pushing it. @@oniinside123 Yes - tell me about it. Paid $5 to local shop to mount one of the tires but like you said I'd be out of luck on the side of the road. Something about the rim design makes remounting tires tough.

@@ken7514 Glad you found it useful! The repair stand is a $40 MaxxHaul repair stand that has been very useful (see our full review here kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnyWhpanpdFnoLs). The clamp is a bit cheap and has a bit of play but otherwise it works great.

Are you satisfied with the wheels? bcz the one i have they start to flex

The stock wheels aren't anything fancy, but they have held up well for us. Upgrading them definitely can let you save some weight and make the bike accelerate faster.

@@TheSweetCyclists were all the tyres fitted in the stock rims?
@TheSweetCyclists

Yes, everything in the video is using the stock wheelset. Installing the tires is a bit annoying though, it's very difficult to get them to seat properly, particularly the wider tires at lower pressures. We had to buy a tire seater tool (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXrJmnmLiLJqiNE) to help get the tires to snap in place. Note for the 700x36 or wider tires, it would be better to use a wheelset with wider inner rim width though.

do you need to change the rims?
@TheSweetCyclists
@TheSweetCyclists 3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to, but running larger than 700x36 on the stock rims isn't ideal longer term. You'll want a wheelset with wider inner width to match wider tires. Having a second wheelset is nice to have though, as you can get something a lot lighter than the stock wheels.
