The dancers/warriors are around 80 to 100 high school students and the drummers and instruments are around the same numbers. So just imagine how loud it can be. There are different contests leading up to the main event and one is the battle of the drums.

Dinagyang in Iloilo City, Ati-atihan in Kalibo, Aklan and Sinulog in Cebu are festivals celebrated for the child Jesus. They are 3rd and 4th Sunday of January festivals. But if you want to see most of the festivals in the Philippines in just one go, try the Aliwan festival in Manila. Dinagyang has consistently been one of the winners in that festival.

THEY CHANTED "Viva Señor Sto. Niño"! WHICH IS IN HONOR OF THE BABY JESUS. THE STATUE IS THE IMAGE OF THE CHILD JESUS AS THE PATRON OF THE CITY. IT IS THE CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIANIZED TRIBAL WARRIORS, FOUGHT SIDE BY SIDE WITH FILIPINO GUERILLAS AGAINST SPANISH COLONIZATION. THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL STORIES TO TELL IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY & THEY'RE THE OLDEST FESTIVAL IN THE COUNTRY, MAKING THEM THE MOTHER OF ALL FESTIVALS.

Dinagyang is not just purely streetdancing and drums. Each competing tribes has a deep storyline behind the performance, depicting Iloilo history and culture, even legends and myths passed from older generation to another, integrating the values of love, peace, harmony, respect, unity and Christianity.

And by the way the storyline of the Dinagyang festival usually revolves around the history of Panay Island where Iloilo City is in. From the time of the aborigines, then when the Malays came and bought the lowlands from them, and when the Spaniards came and introduced Christianity.

Iloilo is a place in the philippine where you could find the most happiest people on earth not only at times of victory or success but even in times of troubles, sorrow or problem. We used the hiligaynon dialect and we call the people from iloilo as ilonggo. They used to say "sadya" in all aspect which literally means happy, like for example sadya guid ni karon ang nilaktanay sa dinagyang which means they will get tired of walking in the streets because of dinagyang festival, sadya guid ni magrambulanay which means somebody will be fighting, etc.

I was born in Panay Island, the Festival in our Province celebrated every January we called “Ati-Atihan Fiesta” or the “ Santo Niño Fiesta “ it’s the celebrations of christianity of the child Jesus. Many years ago we just started of Float Parade competition, & group of people dancing on the streets with drums of music & we painted our skin black charcoal to commemorate our ancestors . Then to attract more tourists they created a colorful costumes group dancers . It’s beautiful & attractive, every year they become more & more creative!
