Renowned recorder builder and player Adriana Breukink unexpectedly passed away on October 6, 2022. She meant a great deal to the recorder community, and will be dearly missed. A little while back she generously appeared on Team Recorder and spent a day showing me around her workshop and explaining the philosophy behind her instrument building. I looked back through my videos and realised her recorders have been featured her around 25 times! So I made this compilation in tribute to Adri, and the great things she has done for us.

That was divinity manifest. She could see things superconsciously. I don't know much about her, but I doubt that she had all sort of engineering equipment to guide her in designing recorders. She just somehow knew how to do it. Intuition, if used correctly, is a VERY POWERFUL thing, much more so than western Materialist science (based strictly on the physical world). I can imagine that she will be greatly missed, not just because of her playing and crafting these masterpieces, but because of the person she was. The person she was could only manifest these magnificent qualities that lead to such highly evolved results. Will she come back to pick up where she left off in about 15 years? Who knows what is planned for her.

I was very sad indeed to learn of Adriana's untimely death. We met a long time ago when we were both exhibiting at the Holland Festival in Utrecht. It may have been her first exhibition. I had only attended one or two. I remember discussing the difficulty of getting started. She always impressed me with her inventivity and the amazing sound that her instruments produced. We shared a common passion for Nepal, and the Himalayan region, which we had both visited. Thank you for publishing this tribute to Adriana and her life's work. We will miss her smile and enthusiasm.

It is a sad fact that one of the few certainties of life is that it will eventually end for all, rich or poor, famous or obscure. But somehow your wonderful tribute to her takes a bit out of the sting out of losing her, and for that I offer the most profound thanks to you.

From all the makers I have seen, she was my favorite. Breaks my heart. this. I have my own little tragedies in my life, but still had the dream of being a maker myself, I'm better making things than playing the recorder. This made me cry and at the same time makes me keep dreaming beyond hope. Love you Sara. Love you Adriana, although we never met.

So sad to hear. She would have been 59 or 60 by my estimate, which is far too young an age to die. The world has lost a visionary and inventive recorder maker and a wonderful human being. She is actually the first modern recorder maker whose name I knew as I spotted her interestingly different slide recorder in a Moeck catalogue not long after I started playing, and then she became practically a household name when she made the Traumflöte, the Dream Flute recorders, with Mollenhauer. Her recorders will live on and continue to breathe beautiful music into the world.

Thank you, Sarah, for this lovely tribute to Adriana Breukink.👍🎶 Very interesting. What a wonderful lady. A creator, innovator and an empath. I would've loved to meet her... She left way too soon, and must have still had some projects she would've wanted to realise! May she rest in peace, and watch upon all flute players! Blessings. 💝🙏

Adriana Breukink passed into glory on October 6, 2022. She was a Dutch recorder maker from Enschede, Netherlands, who made Renaissance, baroque and modern instruments. Adriana was introduced to the recorder by an aunt when she was nine years old. She attended the Royal Conservatory of The Hague where she worked with Frans Brüggen and Ricardo Kanji. The great recorder maker Fred Morgan offered classes at the Conservatory, and Adriana worked with him to make a Ganassi recorder. By the time she had completed her solo exam in 1980, she had decided to become an instrument maker. Adriana became a leader in the development of new recorders. In 1997, she developed a Ganassi-based recorder with a chin-controlled dynamic slide extension for Moeck. In an effort to develop a Renaissance style recorder for use by beginners she developed the Adri's Dream recorder in collaboration with Mollenhauer in 1999. She later expanded this line to include Dream recorders for more advanced players. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia R.I.P. Adriana 😔

As someone new to the recorder, I've been learning on an Adri's dream. I watched many of Adriana's videos over the last couple of months, and I have been looking forward to the day when I feel ready to purchase one of her Ganassi Eagle recorders. She was a very talented and intelligent woman who had a lifelong love for her craft. This community suffers a major loss without her.

I felt like she had years to go with the recorder. I cannot deal with this. What a loss!

Wow. So sad to see such a master in all things recorders leave this world. She must have been an amazing person, a Goddess of recorders, as she could make AND play! Such rare talent and skill... I only decided to get back to playing recorders again. I didn't learn much last time, as I have been dealing with living as an ex-pat in my host country and the separation from family and the US for safety reasons. I've struggled with depression all these years, particularly before I came here. Not having a stable life. Not knowing where I was going to live. I never, ever imagined that I might have to live in another country with a good amount of uncertainty. I've been here for 5.5 years, and I'm trying to get into Indian music, and it has a steep, STEEP learning curve given my age of 58. The least I can do, having been a musician trained in the West in the past, is to maintain interest as a spectator while trying be a little better tomorrow than I was today.

I did not know that Adriana Breukink was the one who almost revolutionised how audiences listen and react to recorders by innovating and making changes. Certainly when I started listening to music 60 years ago, the recorder was confined to niche audiences. Now the situation is so different and recorders of all types have carved out their place and all because of musicians like you who have done so much to bring the recorder to the forefront. This tribute to Adriana is very appropriate - thank you so much for all you are doing. My very best wishes, Sakuntala Basu India

I was so deeply shocked, when I heard of Adri's sudden death. It is such a great loss for the recorder community. She was not only a brilliant recorder maker, but also a very friendly and warm hearted person. I met her many times at the recorder festival in Stockstadt/ Germany and we always had a small chat together. Many years ago I played the prototypes of her eagle recorders, and it was so fascinating to see, how this wonderful instruments developed in the last years. I am so happy to have seen her recently in Bad Kissingen: although she was very busy with customers, she took the time to talk with me. Every time, when I play my dream recorders I think of her. Dear Adriana, you left us much too early! Thank you so much Sarah, for this video.
